To the memory of Robert and Robert Drever father and son lost at sea on a calm night off the island of Sanday, Orkney 31 August 1999. The two had set out to collect lobster pots that day. The first sign that things were amiss was the early return of the dog, which arrived home wet and exhausted. Despite extensive searches only the body of the son has to date been found. The boat was located and raised. The cause of the tragedy is still a mystery. The title is from a poem of William Blake.

Published by Ashlyn Graham (A0.1408288). This is a shortened version of my original piece Cordolium. The original description is as follows: Cordolium, meaning heartfelt grief; sorrow of the heart, heartache. I wrote this piece with one of my favorite pieces in mind: Barber's Adagio for Strings. I wanted to challenge myself to convey emotion like Barber did, and to write a piece with a lot of emotional potential. Cordolium travels through the stages of grief, allowing the musicans to express denial, agitation, and depression, before it concludes with a dejected acceptance of all the sorrow that came before. I realized the original is too long especially for advanced HS groups so I decided to create this cut version to accomodate. This shortened version forced me to cut some transitions and some beautiful sections out, but it still contains the main motifs and allows all the expression in a shorter time. It also includes more bowing and a few more dynamics to help give student groups more directions. The original work can be found here: Cordolium

This somber setting of this typical joyous hymn reflects moments in life when pain, sorrow, or remorse overtake one’s ability to sing “Joy to the Worldâ€. Sometimes, we must sing this lyric despite our current circumstances in hopes of what is to come. Musically, there are plenty of opportunities to work on melodic playing and bow technique through phrasing and dynamic swells. A hemiola is prominent in the last half of the piece between lower strings and middle voices. After some harmonic tension, an accelerando, and a release, the melody peacefully resolves. The soloist plays the role of an accomplished, yet most pretentious and self-aggrandizing soloist. The accompanying orchestra parts are not difficult, although a more advanced orchestra will be able to make even more of the light-hearted and occasionally dramatic accompaniment. A two-page outline of suggestions are also provided to help enhance the comedy, but you are invited to put your own comedic stamp on the performance. Early in the work, the soloist has a few very simple solo passages which he or she deftly and smugly executes flawlessly. It is a dance of unbridled joy to celebrate a rich harvest of nature's bounty. In 2013, I transcribed it from my private archive of old dusty audio tapes no one had ever heard, and with the CarsonValley Sinfonia in mind, revised it for string orchestra without winds.1995 was a low period in my life. The pressure from my job in the technology industry was relentless, and personal relationships at that time sometimes brought emotional pain instead of solace and comfort. Grasping for any ray of hope to illuminate the gloom, I turned back to my original love: music.Immersing myself deeply in the process of music creation, I rediscovered not only a talent for composition, but even more importantly tapped into the creative source of uplift, joy, and energy, the source of all gifts, that is available to every sincere person. During those years, composing music was a vital lifeline. Like the powerful beam of the rescuer's flashlight guiding you toward the daylight when you are emerging from a dark cave. Like a new baby being born. Now a great many years later, life now brimming with music and friends, and having put old sorrows far behind me, music from that time of troubles still fills me with the same joy as when I composed it, and I hope it uplifts you.Harvest Dance is dedicated to my friend, composer John O'Neill, with profound appreciation for his encouragement, as well as helping me learn the practicalities of arranging for a string orchestra.
