ATON is a stage play written by Manfred Strolz and Otmar Rützler which represents Egypt in the time of the Pharoahs but seen through the eyes of modern theatre directors and actors. The modern scenes are spoken but the Egyptian scenes require music, so Manfred and Otmar asked me to write the music for these. The music is composed for various forces as the play progresses, from the full orchestra (woodwind, strings, harp, piano, timpani) and choir down to more intimate moments with single voice or duets, flute and classical guitar or with single voice and bassoon. For each section the pdf file contains score and parts and the sound sample is an electronic preview. As I write 16 sections have been composed, but more are to come - please just search for Aton in due course for the full picture. The first performance is planned to take place in the Landestheater in Innsbruck during 2015 ================= ATON ist ein Bühnenstück von Manfred Strolz and Otmar Rützler geschrieben, das Ägypten von der Pharaonenzeit vorstellt aber auch duch die Augen moderner Direktoren und Schauspieler sieht. Die modernen Szenen sind gesprochen aber die ägyptischen Szenen brauchen Musik, deshalb haben mich Manfred und Otmar gebeten die Musik dafür zu schreiben. Die Musik ist für verschiedene Kräfte während des Stückes komponiert: vom vollen Orchester (Holzbläser, Streicher, Harfe, Klavier, Timpani) und Chor bis zu intimeren Augenblicken mit Solostimme (oder Duetten) mit Flöte und klassicher Gitarre oder Solostimme mit Fagott. Im Augenblick gibt es 16 Kompositionen, aber es wird noch mehr geben - bitte suche später nach Aton für das vollständige Bild. Für jede Komposition enhält die pdf-Datei Partitur und Stimmen und die mp3-Datei ist eine elektronische Vorschau. Es wird geplant, die erste Aufführung im Landestheater Innsbruck im Jahre 2015 stattzuhalten.

Published by Matt Arnett Music (A0.1181692). Guaranteed to steal the show, this arrangement will challenge your advanced middle school or lower high school orchestra. While it may take some time for the students to get used to the compound meter (12/8), the rhythm of the accompmaniment is kept quite simple. Harder will be the fast tempo and the chromatic finger patterns. The piece also starts with two difficult solos for your most advanced violin or viola players - I recommend having them stand on opposite sides of the front of the stage to help with projection. Have the lower strings focus especially on keeping the light staccato style of the piece - put space in between those grooving notes when the eighth rest is marked. I hope you enjoy performing this piece!

Published by Michael Butkus-Bomier (A0.862523). The GateWay Editions First Position String Orchestra Series presents this three-movement suite. A Moderato of about 4 mins duration, an Andante, the featured portion of the suite, running about 7 mins, and a final Allegro, all clocking in at just under 14 mins. ALL notes are playable in first position for ALL sections, of course! The basses sometimes shift to 1 1/2 position, as is the usual pedagogy for their instrument. No fast notes across strings or trills. A minimum of accidentals. These three pieces use tightly controlled rhythms, intervals, and melodic fragments, to create a maximum of symphonic euphony through the combination of just a few musical elements. The audio clip is the complete suite. This work can be the centerpiece of a concert for a youth orchestra, a community group, or a high school ensemble. The phrases are not longer than 4 notes, many are two-note groups, making the choices for bowings much easier than longer strings of notes. Each part has the first movement on page one, the second movement on two facing pages, and the third one the last page, making for easy organization of music onstage and in rehearsal. The original description is as follows: Cordolium, meaning heartfelt grief; sorrow of the heart, heartache. I wrote this piece with one of my favorite pieces in mind: Barber's Adagio for Strings. I wanted to challenge myself to convey emotion like Barber did, and to write a piece with a lot of emotional potential. Cordolium travels through the stages of grief, allowing the musicans to express denial, agitation, and depression, before it concludes with a dejected acceptance of all the sorrow that came before. I realized the original is too long especially for advanced HS groups so I decided to create this cut version to accomodate. This shortened version forced me to cut some transitions and some beautiful sections out, but it still contains the main motifs and allows all the expression in a shorter time. It also includes more bowing and a few more dynamics to help give student groups more directions. The original work can be found here: Cordolium

The Battle of Gettysburg includes arrangements of music popular during the Civil War.  These are arranged for middle school strings and percussion with added narration and optional staging.  Musically It includes dotted rhythms with hooked bowing, the key of Bb Major, slurs, ties and 6/8 time.  The piece can be staged with appropriate uniforms and flags of the Union and Confederate armies.This is a great interdisciplinary project combining history, music and theater.   The score is 13 pages.  The parts total 22 pages (violin 1, violin 2, viola, 'cello, bass, percussion, and narrator).
