Published by Michael Butkus-Bomier (A0.862513). A musette is a bassline that typically uses alternating low and high octaves to keep the underpinnings of a melody moving right along. Here we have that broken octave figure split into two voices, the cello and bass. Thus, no one section has to keep alternating up and down. The tune is a Shubertian sort of easy-going, elegant song. It is harmonized with as much color as the basic scalar melody can absorb, without getting too radical in its tonal range. The final section uses two dotted quarters in each measure instead of three plain quarter-notes. Bowings are by string pedagogue Lori Sandell Lacey. Running time at the suggested tempo is 3 mins. The piece CAN go faster should your group be up to that task! Remember, ALL notes are in 1st position for all sections, no trills or fast passages across strings, all standard up and down bowings, no pizzicato or divisi. Makes a nice opening piece, or the end of the first section of a two-part program. MBB.

The Intermezzo was a character piece from the Romantic Period which often took a specific musical idea, and created a bittersweet, elegiac mood, similar to the feeling evoked by a Nocturne. This piece takes the interval of a 6th and weaves it through several configurations to create this same feeling in the first offering from the GateWay Editions First Position String Orchestra Series. A Brahmsian feeling predominates throughout. At 5 mins 30 secs duration, this all-first-position piece makes an excellent concert feature for the ensemble that is finding its voice, but may not yet be up to the level of multi-position full-fledged classical string music. The tempo is stately without being draggy, the mood is somber but not dark, and tuneful without being busy or meandering. The key signature of one sharp makes this nicely adapted to teaching and performance by students, while the rich writing makes it quite presentable to an adult concert audience.The bowings are by string pedagogue Lori Sandell Lacey. The PDF provided here is a score, and a single part for each section. Multiple printings of each part, as needed for your ensemble, are permissible, of course. There are NO notes out of first position, or outside the range of the second year of string pedagogy, the basses having a bit more need to move up 1/2 position for each string. n There are no trills or fast passages across strings. All parts have standard up or down-bowing, no advanced bowings or pizzicato. Audio is at prescribed tempo, faster or even a bit slower are also reasonable interpretations. MBB.

While it may take some time for the students to get used to the compound meter (12/8), the rhythm of the accompmaniment is kept quite simple. Harder will be the fast tempo and the chromatic finger patterns. The piece also starts with two difficult solos for your most advanced violin or viola players - I recommend having them stand on opposite sides of the front of the stage to help with projection. Have the lower strings focus especially on keeping the light staccato style of the piece - put space in between those grooving notes when the eighth rest is marked. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.746694). Arrangement of That's a Plenty for String Orchestra. That’s a Plenty arranged for String Orchestra, is a 1914 ragtime piano piece composed by Lew Pollack. Lyrics by Ray Gilbert (born 1912) were added decades later. A number of popular vocal versions have been recorded, but the tune remains more performed as an instrumental. The composition started out as a rag, but is nowadays played as a part of the Dixieland jazz repertoire. The song has been recorded by numerous artists, and it is considered a jazz standard. The first recording was in 1917 by Prince’s Band, and the New Orleans Rhythm Kings recorded their rendition in 1923.Television comedian Jackie Gleason used it in his shows in the 1950s and 1960s. It was recorded by Albert Nicholas, clarinet, with The Big Chief Jazz Band in Oslo on August 29, 1955. Released on the 78 rpm record Philips P 53038. The Pollack and Gilbert song is not to be confused with a 1909 song of the same name by Henry Creamer and Bert Williams. This is a great way to feature a fantastic cellist while introducing the whole orchestra (and audience) to some accessible trends in contemporary music. The orchestra students were *very* excited and engaged with this piece, and the audience absolutely loved it.Compositional goals included:Accessible introduction to contemporary music.Fun and engaging parts for each section of the orchestraHighlight both cellist and orchestra with parts that sound difficult but are relatively simple.Clear-cut form and motivic material as a starting point for discussion of composition.Circles is 11:00 long, in 4 movements with no breaks.Mvt I. Circles begins high-energy and includes sweeping arpeggio figures and measured tremolo oscillations. The energy dissipates and a simple lyrical theme emerges, battling complications as they arise in the orchestra.Mvt II. Passacaglia is built over an exotic vamp and includes jete (to imitate castanets), col legno, snap pizz and instrument slaps. Mvt III. Lament begins with the soloist doing slow pizzicato arpeggiations while the orchestra bows weeping chords. Eventually, everyone is pizzicato, echoing and transforming the solo line. A cello cadenza recalls material from the Passacaglia. The soloist introduces triple-stop string crossings that lead into the fourth movement.Mvt IV. Coda is fast, with the triple stops in the solo part as a moto perpetuo, while the string sections come in one-by-one underneath. By the end, everyone is bowing and we circle back to the opening material of the 1st movement. The Soloist should be fluent through 3 octaves.Orchestra parts are easier and generally require fluency through 4th position. Written in 2011-12 and premiered by Eric with the Mountain View High School (Loveland, CO), Peter Toews conducting. Recording is of that premier. Eric can provide a MIDI if desired.Eric is happy to work with the orchestra and/or soloist via Skype (or a similar arrangement).

It is one of Mozart's more complex and ambitious sonatas and is generally regarded as one of his greatest works for the instrument.The sonata is divided into three movements:1.   Allegro - The first movement is a fast-paced and energetic sonata-allegro form, characterized by its lively theme and virtuosic passages. The movement begins with a bold and dramatic opening statement, followed by a series of contrasting themes and variations. According to Mozart's letters to his father, Dürnitz played the flute very well, and Mozart was impressed by his abilities. The subtitle of the firstmovement (...a continuum of dreams...) could be seen as a sort of subtitle for theentire work that sets the mood and provides unification for the entire piece. The firstmovement is a slow and ethereal chaconne. The strings and the saxophone interact invarious ways throughout this movement in non-traditional form. There are actuallytwo ground bass themes; one is introduced at the beginning with pizzicato stringsbut soon moves to the background (although it is almost always present). The secondis presented near the end of the work and eventually the two are combined. Theinterval of an augmented fourth (tritone) has special use throughout the movementas a variety of themes and motifs are transformed throughout. The second movementis a cadenza for the unaccompanied saxophone. The third movement is a fast andwild toccata. The saxophone plays almost without rest for the entire movement. Amiddle section recalls the theme of augmented fourths from the first movement.Heavy use is made of pizzicato strings. A Moderato of about 4 mins duration, an Andante, the featured portion of the suite, running about 7 mins, and a final Allegro, all clocking in at just under 14 mins. ALL notes are playable in first position for ALL sections, of course! The basses sometimes shift to 1 1/2 position, as is the usual pedagogy for their instrument. No fast notes across strings or trills. A minimum of accidentals. These three pieces use tightly controlled rhythms, intervals, and melodic fragments, to create a maximum of symphonic euphony through the combination of just a few musical elements. The audio clip is the complete suite. This work can be the centerpiece of a concert for a youth orchestra, a community group, or a high school ensemble. The phrases are not longer than 4 notes, many are two-note groups, making the choices for bowings much easier than longer strings of notes. Each part has the first movement on page one, the second movement on two facing pages, and the third one the last page, making for easy organization of music onstage and in rehearsal. Its characteristic rhythm was the dotted-eighth-sixteenth figure, which is used throughout this piece. The real substance of this composition is not the dance form, however, but the strict and highly evocative use of the ascending and descending forms of the melodic minor scale. Since this was such a Baroque Era staple, I felt the piece had to use Baroque forms, techniques and structures as well. So, the key is D minor. C and Bb going down, B and C# going up. No accidentals but these were used. D minor is not the happiest of keys, and accordingly the mood here is somber. The orchestral texture is NOT rich and lush, like other pieces in the series, but is thinner and more contrapuntally transparent. There are three internal cadences before the ending sequence. Suspensions, voice leading, and dissonances are all treated in a standard Baroque fashion. Bowings by string pedagogue Lori Sandell Lacey. Running time is approx 3 mins 30 secs.at suggested tempo. The piece could certainly go faster if your group can handle it. Each part is but a single page, for easy management of music in rehearsal and performance. MBB.

Students also develop some of the many skills involved in instrumental playing faster than other skills.The Mixed Abilities School Ensemble Series for Easy String Orchestra has the flexibility to allow pupils of different standards to play together in one ensemble (up to five parts).Each piece has a total of 5 different parts which are fully interchangeable between violins, violas and cellos (double basses can double the cello parts). So whether you have 15 violins and a viola, or 3 violins, or 4 cellos or whatever, the pieces will still work well together. All parts are provided for all instruments.Part 5 uses long notes on open strings. The other parts gradually increase in difficulty up to Part 1, which uses first and second positions. The teacher should select appropriate parts for the players in the group.I GOT THE BLUES is the second piece in this series, and uses typical Blues characteristics such as syncopation and swung quavers. It also includes a section in which any player can improvise; suggested notes to use in the solo are provided along with backing figures.Please listen to the mp3 file, which is an electronic example of the piece being played with 4 violin parts and a cello on Part 5.The purchaser of this product may print as many copies of the parts as required in order for the piece to work successfully with the ensemble.
