Flirting with musical and dramatic elements from Medieval Europe to the ancient Middle East and Ancient Greek Theatre, Of Roses and Lilies features the solo soprano in the role of The Woman; she expresses her love, devotion, and delight toward her Lover while the Daughters of Jerusalem - as with that of the collective commentary of a Greek chorus - listen and engage with The Woman in her tales touting the glories of her Beloved. The work is in three major sections after the expressive and fluid introduction: the first in A Minor, introducing the characters and their vivd emotions; the second in A Major, during which The Woman shares a tale of her Lover calling her to escape with him into the night... Add a touch of blues to your string orchestra repertoire with this lazy ‘ole’ tune in the style of early Duke Ellington, at the time he was playing New York’s Cotton Club. In this type of number, Ellington typically used three clarinets playing a harmonised melody, which is why this tune, Harlem Love Call, works well with a string orchetra, the three clarinets being replaced by violins 1, violins 2 and violas. The celli and basses play a supporting role and propel everything along. Play it in a lazy fashion and bend a few notes here and there if you wish. It’s that kind of piece. Note that it starts quietly at A and increases in volume through B and C. It quietens down at D and E is quieter still (pianissimo) through to the end. Length 2.30 mins.

Ruth and I were at the London College of Music together during this time. We worked together to rehearse the piece and eventually it was given a run-through by a group of string players and harpist, Alice Trentham (also at the college with us at the time). It still awaits its premiere! One day I hope I can post up a recording of this beautiful piece.A friend who attended its “play through†described it as being like “the South American Rain Forestsâ€, which I thought was a beautiful, and very fitting description.Duration: Approximately 15 minutesAll of the parts are challenging so this is not a piece for junior players.

The original description is as follows: Cordolium, meaning heartfelt grief; sorrow of the heart, heartache. I wrote this piece with one of my favorite pieces in mind: Barber's Adagio for Strings. I wanted to challenge myself to convey emotion like Barber did, and to write a piece with a lot of emotional potential. Cordolium travels through the stages of grief, allowing the musicans to express denial, agitation, and depression, before it concludes with a dejected acceptance of all the sorrow that came before. I realized the original is too long especially for advanced HS groups so I decided to create this cut version to accomodate. This shortened version forced me to cut some transitions and some beautiful sections out, but it still contains the main motifs and allows all the expression in a shorter time. It also includes more bowing and a few more dynamics to help give student groups more directions. The original work can be found here: Cordolium

Written in 2024, Romance for String Orchestra is unabashedly tonal piece based on music from my compositions Romance for Orchestra (1982) and Pasacalle Triste (2024). Romance for Orchestra was composed as my undergraduate thesis at The Boston Conservatory of Music and has since writhed in obscurity. One understands why, though: various passages sound like juvenilia. Still, others sound a good deal stronger, and it is those passages that I have rescued, and which are featured in Romance for String Orchestra. Newly composed passages bracket and are intertwined with older ones, many of which are here transposed. Though just a smattering when compared to the number of passages borrowed from Romance for Orchestra, the ones borrowed from Pasacalle Triste nonetheless provide a meaningful creative arc manifested in one composition, and they provide just the right touches during various sequential passages. Speaking of sequences, Romance for Orchestra contains what is for my oeuvre the most expansive sequence I have composed to date; in both cases that sequence leads to the formal recapitulation of the main theme in the tonic key C Minor. Students also develop some of the many skills involved in instrumental playing faster than other skills.The Mixed Abilities School Ensemble Series for Easy String Orchestra has the flexibility to allow pupils of different standards to play together in one ensemble (up to five parts).Each piece has a total of 5 different parts which are fully interchangeable between violins, violas and cellos (double basses can double the cello parts). So whether you have 15 violins and a viola, or 3 violins, or 4 cellos or whatever, the pieces will still work well together. All parts are provided for all instruments.Part 5 uses long notes on open strings. The other parts gradually increase in difficulty up to Part 1, which uses first and second positions. The teacher should select appropriate parts for the players in the group.I GOT THE BLUES is the second piece in this series, and uses typical Blues characteristics such as syncopation and swung quavers. Scherzo: Allegro.Beethoven's Bagatelles Op. 33 are quite typical of his early style, retaining many compositional features of the early Classical period.  The first bagatelle in particular is arguably one of Beethoven's most well-known pieces. While they may seem light-hearted and not to be taken too seriously, they are still well-crafted works that embody the younger Beethoven's style. The Bagatelles Op. 33 were composed by Beethoven in 1801-02 and published in 1803. Bagatelles are shorter and less complex than sonatas, often consisting of a single movement. They were intended to be played as light entertainment or as encores at the end of a concert.The Bagatelle No. 2 of Op. 33 follows a simple ternary form, with a lively and playful Scherzo character. The piece is in the key of C major and is written in 2/4 time signature. The A section is characterized by a catchy and rhythmic melody that is repeated twice, with slight variations in the second repetition. The B section, in the relative key of A minor, provides a contrast to the A section with a more lyrical and expressive melody. The B section is also repeated twice, with slight variations in the second repetition. The A section returns in its original form to close the piece.
