String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1201464 By Vessela Stoyanova. By Vessela Stoyanova. Folk,Multicultural,World. Score and parts. 89 pages. Vessela Stoyanova #798931. Published by Vessela Stoyanova (A0.1201464). “Mountain Goats and Other Creatures†was Commissioned by Rachel Jayson and the Lexington High School Symphony Orchestra. It was inspired by the folk music of my native land of Bulgaria, informed by my experience as a rock musician, reimagined through the lense of my place inside of a community of like-minded artists and musicians, where I have made my real home today. The first movement - Mountain Goats - is a sort of celebration of renewal, promise, and hope. It represents the tenacious will of grass growing through the snow of early spring, the powerful longing for human connection, the warmth of the sun against your skin on a bright chilly day. It carries both the pristine optimism of youth, and the nervous energy of trying something for the first time. The second movement - Samodivi - in contrast is dark, heavy and full of passion and desire. According to Balkan myths, Samodivi are gorgeous nymphs who live in the woods and often seduce men with their beautiful song and dance. They are feared and envied at the same time. The music of the second movement represents the mysterious dark forest at night - lower strings create the moss under your feet, higher strings use extended techniques to simulate the noise of branches clicking the wind, a few soloists represent different creatures - both real and imaginary - scurry through the woods above your head. Then you hear the lone song of a Samodiva in the distance, your heart is beating hard, your steps are leading you straight towards the call against your better judgement. It is the ancient story of fear and desire, of self control and complete abandon. You, the listener, become witness to a wild dance, fire in the woods, snakes in their long blond hairs, slender bodies dressed in white clouds dancing to an imaginary beat.  Then it all ends abruptly and you left to wonder: Was it real? Did I see it? Am I safe? The third and final movement of the piece is based on a popular rhythmic folk dance in Bulgaria called Kopanitsa, while the melody creates a fugue between the different voices of the orchestra. The Kids are the little of the mountain goats - free to frolic high above tree line, above any human traces, as close to the clouds as one can get and still be touching the ground below. They are carefree, daring, and somewhat naive, yet safe under the watchful gaze of their parent. The movements ends in cascading repetitions of a musical motif in 5/8 representing the relentless passing of time or at least our perception of it.

String Orchestra - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.861927 Composed by Mark O'Connor. 20th Century,Contemporary,Folk. Score and parts. 102 pages. Mark O'Connor Musik International #6208091. Published by Mark O'Connor Musik International (A0.861927). The American Seasons (score – violin and string orchestra) MO148AScore (parts available)Music by Mark O’Connor99 pages - 38:00 minutes in length The American Seasons(Seasons Of An American Life)The American Seasons (Seasons Of An American Life) is a concerto for Violin And Chamber Orchestra. Composed in 1999, the music celebrates the various stages of an American life at the waking of the 21st century. Constructed in four movements and representing four stages of life, birth, adolescence, maturity and old age, the music also pays homage to Shakespeare's Seasons Of Man His acts being seven ages, incorporated throughout the work.Spring introduces the ideas of birth and infancy. After the principal theme has been stated, there is a violin cadenza encountering all twelve major keys and a 13/8 time signature representing the ancient golden ratio. These elements recall birth with all the possibilities a new life offers. Ending the movement, the principal theme is repeated with more complexity... as if posing life's questions.Summer represents the excitement and bravado of youthful adolescence and young adulthood. For the style of this movement I use a happy-go-lucky Blues voice which melds into Swing. I identify swing rhythm in all of 20th century American music culture as a common thread that runs through Ragtime through Rock and Roll on to Rap. Swing means testing the waters and pushing the envelope for lovers and soldiers.Fall is the slow movement symbolizing the wisdom of maturity. It is a peaceful theme with nostalgic strokes. It is a time for sincere reflection and enjoying ones accomplishments in life.Winter embodies the complexities and knowledge of an older person and that of a dying person. The movement begins with the principal them from Spring, but with a dissonance that emanates from a lifetime full of emotions and responsibilities. In the middle of the movement is a transition to an old world. I use my personal ancestry from Ireland as a foundation from which to rediscover one's lineage and explore the meaning and value of a cultural legacy. The exploration evolves into a four- and five-part fugue with a reel, jig, air, countered bass and the motif from the principal theme. All these elements, dances and melodies appear simultaneously and converge to form a unique insight to life's consequences from a historical perspective. Following the fugue, the principal theme finds its way back in. It sounds much as it did at birth. In the end, the solo violin cadenza carries the last earthly breaths before the violin and orchestra once again join in harmony to focus on a new life being transformed somewhere else. Life's four seasons in perpetuity. Original music printed from the composer’s manuscripts.Music editing, copying and engraving by Mark O’Connorusing Finale on Apple Macintosh 1999 Composed by Mark O’ConnorCommissioned by the Troy Savings Bank Concert Hall for their 2000 Celebration Can be heard on American Seasons Sony Classical and The Essential Mark O’Connor Sony ClassicalMark O’Connor - violin, Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra, Scott Yoo Catalogue Number MO148ACopyright © 1999 by Mark O’Connor Music International For more information on violinist and composer Mark O'Connor, O’Connor String Camps, Touring Ensembles, Discography, Bio, Repertoire and more, please visitwww.markoconnor.com For information on the O’Connor Method – instructional book series for vi.

James Nathaniel Holland #877732. Published by James Nathaniel Holland (A0.1286698). INDIVIDUAL INSTRUMENTS PARTS 2 of 2 (Harp and Strings).  This four act contemporary opera, original libretto and music, by 21st century American composer James Nathaniel Holland is the story of the triumph of Love over Evil, however delayed, and the power of keeping steadfast to one’s righteous promise.  Based on the German fairy tale The Six Swans, in a kingdom, during Saxon times, the murderous daughter of an evil entity, Ravia, infiltrates and takes over the lives of a royal family due to the King’s rash promise to marry her many years before. The royal children are sent away by their father for safety to a hidden, woodland cottage, but Ravia discovers where they are and hexes the younger siblings, turning them into swallows.  Usha, the eldest, escapes and flees to the wilderness and is visited by the apparition of her dead mother who explains what is going on and that Usha must swear an oath of silence for six years to break the spell and change her siblings back into human form.Five years pass and a dashing and kind king, Rohric, of another kingdom, finds Usha while hunting, falls in love with and marries her, but Usha must remain silent and cannot reveal who she is.  Ravia, who now is sole queen of the old kingdom, is invited by Rohric’s nobles with hope to secure a “proper†wedding for Rohric.  Usha is accused falsely of killing her own child by the two and is sentenced to be burned at the stake, but as the bell tolls she finally can declare her innocence.  To the crowd’s amazement her siblings change back, all truth is revealed, and for Ravia’s failure, she is dragged back to hell by demons.  Singers:  King Alfred (bass), Ravia (soprano), Princess Usha (mezzo), Queen Mother Arna (soprano), the royal siblings (children’s/boy’s chorus), King Rohric (Tenor), The Evil Noble (baritone), An angel/a demon (bass), SATB ChorusScored for full orchestra.  Instrumentation:  picc/treble recorder, fl12, ob12, eh, cl12, bsn12, hrn 123, tpt123, trom12, tba, timp, perc.12 (bd, crash cym, ride cym with soft mallets and stick, small gong, wood blk, glk, chimes, snar, tri), hrp, stringsDuration:  2 hoursFull Orchestral Score (concert pitch), Piano Vocal Score and Instruments Parts 1 (woodwinds, brass, perc.) and Parts 2 (harp and strings) sold separately.

String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.742492 Composed by George Frideric Handel. Arranged by Arte Nova Music Lab. Baroque,Concert,Standards,World. Score and parts. 57 pages. Arte Nova Music Lab #5041947. Published by Arte Nova Music Lab (A0.742492). Around the year 1726, John Walsh, a London music publisher, created a wonderful forgery in order to run around the copyright laws of the day: he pretended to pirate an edition supposedly published by the House of Roger in Amsterdam. This forgery included 12 Sonatas for solo instrument and continuo which had been composed by one George Frideric Handel (1685-1759). Around 1793 the House of Arnold published the same set, omitting two of the original 12 and replacing them with two others by Handel. So at this point there were a total of 14 solo sonatas available to the public. In the year 1879 Friedrich Chrysander issued these 14 works and several others in volume 27 of the German Handel Society’s Gesamtausgabe of Handel’s works. Since then they have been edited from this scholarly work many times, and afflicted by all sorts of permutations which reflect the various styles of performance in vogue over the years. One finds editions stripped of ornamentation but loaded with articulation and dynamic markings at one end of the spectrum, and editions with modest stenographic and florid ornamentation at the other. The Sonata in C Minor (London: 1712) is a pure example of the middle phase of the solo sonata da chiesa [church sonata]. The first three movements are indicative of the style found in sonatas derived from the disruptive canzona of the early 17th century. An initial slow movement with walking bass is followed by an imitative movement (in this case, a fugue with a chromatic subject), which in turn leads to an Adagio. This latter movement in the relative major is a ricercare containing several imitative entrances. The finale is a spirited binary-form Bourrée angloise, an item taken over from the French ordre or dance suite. The extraordinarily short length of this movement seems to indicate that a trio is missing here; therefore, I have added the bourrée from the Royal Fireworks Music of 1749 to act as a trio, but players are certainly free to omit it. Adding a series of variations based on the chord changes of the Bourrée angloise would be an alternative way to lend weight to this final movement.Taken from https://www.idrs.org/scores/Lehrer/DRArch/69HandelSonataCm.html

String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1202559 Composed by W. A. Mozart (1756 – 1791). Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Classical,Contest,Festival,Standards. Score and parts. 125 pages. Jmsgu3 #800938. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1202559). Sonata No. 6, “Durnitz†for String OrchestraScore and performance parts:  Score: 66 pages. Duration: ca. 29:28 Mozart's Sonata in D major, K. 284, also known as the Durnitz Sonata, is a solo piano piece composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1775. It is one of Mozart's more complex and ambitious sonatas and is generally regarded as one of his greatest works for the instrument. The sonata is divided into three movements:1.   Allegro - The first movement is a fast-paced and energetic sonata-allegro form, characterized by its lively theme and virtuosic passages. The movement begins with a bold and dramatic opening statement, followed by a series of contrasting themes and variations. The development section explores new harmonic and rhythmic territory, while the recapitulation brings the movement full circle with a restatement of the main themes.2.   Rondeau en Polonaise - The second movement is a graceful and elegant rondo in the style of a polonaise, a popular dance of the time. The main theme is a lilting melody that is first presented by the right hand and then repeated with variations throughout the movement. The middle section features a contrasting theme in a minor key, which is then developed and expanded upon in the latter half of the movement.3.   Theme and Variations - The final movement is a set of six variations on a theme, which is introduced at the beginning of the movement. Each variation explores a different aspect of the theme, from playful embellishments to dramatic flourishes. The final variation brings the piece to a rousing and triumphant close.Overall, Mozart's Sonata in D major, K. 284, is a masterful example of the composer's virtuosity and innovation and remains a beloved and influential work in the piano repertoire. Mozart's Sonata in D major, K. 284 is also known as the Dürnitz Sonata because it is believed to have been composed for Count Johann Joseph Anton von Dürnitz, an accomplished amateur flautist who was a patron of Mozart.Mozart was in Munich in 1775, and he met Dürnitz there. According to Mozart's letters to his father, Dürnitz played the flute very well, and Mozart was impressed by his abilities. It is believed that Mozart composed this sonata specifically for Dürnitz, who may have performed it with Mozart accompanying him on the piano. No concrete evidence supports the theory that the sonata was named after Dürnitz, but it is widely accepted as the most likely explanation for the nickname. In any case, the sonata remains one of Mozart's most popular and beloved works for solo piano.

Michael Butkus-Bomier #2032331. Published by Michael Butkus-Bomier (A0.862513). A musette is a bassline that typically uses alternating low and high octaves to keep the underpinnings of a melody moving right along. Here we have that broken octave figure split into two voices, the cello and bass. Thus, no one section has to keep alternating up and down. The tune is a Shubertian sort of easy-going, elegant song. It is harmonized with as much color as the basic scalar melody can absorb, without getting too radical in its tonal range. The final section uses two dotted quarters in each measure instead of three plain quarter-notes. Bowings are by string pedagogue Lori Sandell Lacey. Running time at the suggested tempo is 3 mins. The piece CAN go faster should your group be up to that task! Remember, ALL notes are in 1st position for all sections, no trills or fast passages across strings, all standard up and down bowings, no pizzicato or divisi. Makes a nice opening piece, or the end of the first section of a two-part program. MBB.

String Orchestra - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.533700 Composed by Carson Cooman. Baroque,Contemporary,Standards. Score and parts. 38 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3038895. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533700). Concerto for Portatif Organ and Strings (2006) was commissioned by the HarvardBaroque Chamber Orchestra and its director, Robert Mealy. The work is dedicatedto organist Nancy Granert, for whom the solo part was written. The work wascommissioned in celebration of the von Clemm Chamber Organ at The MemorialChurch, Harvard University, built in 2006 by Klop Organ Builders. As with many of my works, relationships between old and new musical concepts areexplored. In this piece, musical aspects of the Baroque organ concerto tradition(and Baroque style string playing) co-exist with more contemporary musicalelements. In particular, the directness of expression found in many Baroqueconcertante works is present throughout. Musical material is shared between themovements in a motivic fashion. The title of the first movement, Bricolage, is defined as “something made or puttogether using whatever materials happen to be available.†Thus, the musicalmaterial for the movement is of varying characters; these elements are assembledtogether in ways that allow them to comment on and inform each other. Some ofthese musical elements include: a traditional “overture†texture, a Basse deTrompette texture (with an organ reed stop in the left hand) common in FrenchBaroque organ music, and the French keyboard toccata style. The second movement, Elegia, is dark and searching in tone. It begins with arageful roar before quieting down to introduce its basic musical material – a simple“lament†theme in a folk-inflected style. This material is used for further explorations, building to passionate climaxes. Finally, the opening music returns, but this timewith a whisper. The movement winds down to a sad conclusion. After the soul-searching of the second movement, the third movement, Rondeau, issprightly and energetic. The basic material is a set of Baroque and Classical-stylefigurations (with a few American gospel inflections thrown in), firmly grounded in Gmajor. Romance for String Orchestra

String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1404778 Composed by Stanley M Hoffman. Arranged by Stanley M Hoffman. 20th Century,21st Century,Classical. 88 pages. Stanleymhoffman.com #987840. Published by stanleymhoffman.com (A0.1404778). Written in 2024, Romance for String Orchestra is unabashedly tonal piece based on music from my compositions Romance for Orchestra (1982) and Pasacalle Triste (2024). Romance for Orchestra was composed as my undergraduate thesis at The Boston Conservatory of Music and has since writhed in obscurity. One understands why, though: various passages sound like juvenilia. Still, others sound a good deal stronger, and it is those passages that I have rescued, and which are featured in Romance for String Orchestra. Newly composed passages bracket and are intertwined with older ones, many of which are here transposed. Though just a smattering when compared to the number of passages borrowed from Romance for Orchestra, the ones borrowed from Pasacalle Triste nonetheless provide a meaningful creative arc manifested in one composition, and they provide just the right touches during various sequential passages. Speaking of sequences, Romance for Orchestra contains what is for my oeuvre the most expansive sequence I have composed to date; in both cases that sequence leads to the formal recapitulation of the main theme in the tonic key C Minor. I hope you enjoy Romance for Orchestra. Thank you for your time and attention.

String Orchestra - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.533701 Composed by Carson Cooman. Baroque,Contemporary,Standards. Score and parts. 77 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3038897. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533701). Concerto for Portatif Organ and Strings (2006) was commissioned by the Harvard Baroque Chamber Orchestra and its director, Robert Mealy. The work is dedicated to organist Nancy Granert, for whom the solo part was written. The work was commissioned in celebration of the von Clemm Chamber Organ at The Memorial Church, Harvard University, built in 2006 by Klop Organ Builders. As with many of my works, relationships between old and new musical concepts are explored. In this piece, musical aspects of the Baroque organ concerto tradition (and Baroque style string playing) co-exist with more contemporary musical elements. In particular, the directness of expression found in many Baroque concertante works is present throughout. Musical material is shared between the movements in a motivic fashion. The title of the first movement, Bricolage, is defined as “something made or put together using whatever materials happen to be available.†Thus, the musical material for the movement is of varying characters; these elements are assembled together in ways that allow them to comment on and inform each other. Some of these musical elements include: a traditional “overture†texture, a Basse de Trompette texture (with an organ reed stop in the left hand) common in French Baroque organ music, and the French keyboard toccata style. The second movement, Elegia, is dark and searching in tone. It begins with a rageful roar before quieting down to introduce its basic musical material – a simple “lament†theme in a folk-inflected style. This material is used for further explorations, building to passionate climaxes. Finally, the opening music returns, but this time with a whisper. The movement winds down to a sad conclusion. After the soul-searching of the second movement, the third movement, Rondeau, is sprightly and energetic. The basic material is a set of Baroque and Classical-style figurations (with a few American gospel inflections thrown in), firmly grounded in G major. After minor diversions, the original material continues to return and ends the work with unfettered joy.

String Orchestra - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1162341 Composed by Vincent Vitale. Chamber,Classical,Contest,Festival,Traditional. Score and Parts. 9 pages. Vincent Vitale #762703. Published by Vincent Vitale (A0.1162341). Prima Canzone is a very easy elementary composition for your string orchestra. The title translates to “first piece†which is meant to be one of the orchestra’s first performance pieces giving the group a chance to perform together for the first time. As noted on the score’s last page the director should feel free to omit the 2nd eighth note and make the 1st eighth note a quarter note throughout.  This will simplify the piece even more. Full score included along with parts and optional harp. If this composition appeals to you please consider the many others in this string series. I trust you and your students will enjoy performing this piece and as always I thank you for your consideration.  I wish you and your students much musical success. Copyright 2023

String Orchestra - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.947255 Composed by John Philips. Blues,Jazz. Score and parts. 25 pages. John Philips Music Service #1996111. Published by John Philips Music Service (A0.947255). This is a simple 12 bar boogie for string orchestra that is fun to play and will let the players have a good time while they perform. There is nothing past an eighth note---no hemidemiquavers--..-The Heritage Series is written to be easy to play and easy to listen to. They all have familiar tunes, sound full, have easy ranges and involve nothing more complicated than an eight note. The object is to produce music and not to display technique. The harmonies, lines and logical counterpoints make these arrangements play well with modest technique. Markings are at minimum to keep things simple. String Bass and Piano must be used to make these arrangements work. The optional acoustic guitar (NOT ELECTRIC) will help the rhythm section. Electric bass could be substituted. If you use an electric bass player, sometimes they can be converted to an upright bass or cello player player( –a devious but legal way to get more players in your school orchestra). There is a 3rd Violin part that is really a treble clef viola part if you have no viola players, or to bolster what you have.

Published by Ron Flintjer (A0.1197485). It's New Year's Eve, the big ball drops in Times Square, lovers kiss, and everyone joins in for a heartfelt chorus of Auld Lang Syne. Here's a truly unexpected treat - a lush, flowing arrangement for middle school orchestra with all the emotion and feeling of this famously wistful tune. Written by Scott Robert Burns over two centuries ago, and still relevant, Auld Lang Syne looks back with longing, and sometimes regret, at our memories. The unanticipated insertion of church bells toward the end adds just the right touch of melancholy. Don't look for any dry eyes in your audience when this one concludes!Intermediate level, perfect for Middle/High School String Orchestra.
