Two Pieces for String Orchestra is an arrangement of two works for cello octet written in 2002 and 2003.The first movement, Sound Silences, explores the friendly partnership between sound and silence with the strings often playing passages with rich timbral colors including sul ponticello, col legno battuto, pizzicato and sul tasto. Sound Silences was composed for Marc Benyahia-Kouider, Professor of cello at the Conservatory of Music in Poitiers. This work is a companion piece to Timbral Timbres. The duration is 6'20.The second movement, Timbral Timbres, is a companion piece to Sound Silences and shows the other side of the sonic world with a continuous 'G' natural sounding with an infinite array of tone colors. It was also written for Marc Benyahia-Kouider, French cellist and professor at the Poitiers Conservatory. The duration is 3'20.The total duration is 9'40.

Harald Genzmer has done a lot for the work with young musicians, and many a string player can recall school orchestra days when Sinfonietta was on the programme quite often. But the probably best-known pupil of Hindemith has written far more of such educational music: all in all, 3 sinfoniettas, apart from collections of simple settings like the eleven Character Pieces for String Orchestra from 1998. They are expressive, entirely songlike miniatures, livened up by two rousing pieces and a pizzicato setting. The pieces can either be played separately or put together into little suites and are ideally suited for school, hobby and amateur orchestras. And despite all educational intentions: It is enjoyable and lively music which is fun to play.

Dramma per Musica, is an opera in three acts based on a libretto by Pietro Metastasio composed by Vivaldi and premiered at the Teatro Sant’Angelo on February 17, 1734, during the carnival. There is an earlier version based on the same libretto but written by Antonio Caldara in 1733. There are more than 50 later versions written by various authors, including Pergolesi (1735).Vivaldi’s opera begins with a Sinfonia for strings (Allegro) followed by two instrumental movements: Andante in cut time, and Allegro in 3/8 time. This edition includes just the first Allegro.There is an autograph copy in score format contained in the manuscript I-Tn, Foà 39, Bl. 1-140. The present edition is based on this manuscript.It is very interesting to mention that there is a violin concerto based on this same symphony (or perhaps the thematic transfer was from the concerto to the symphony). It is the violin concerto in C major rv 177.There are several sources for this concerto: Vivaldi’s autograph contained in the manuscript I-Tn, Foà 31, Bl. 14-25, in score format, and two sources in Dresden, the manuscript D-Dl, Mus. 2389-O-83 (score) and D-Dl, Mus. 2389-O-83a.The concerto includes some changes from the Sinfonia. Although these are different works, the connection between the two pieces seems obvious and the annotations that we find in the violin concerto could complement the information that appears in the Sinfonia. For this reason, it is interesting to mention these changes in this edition.

Mitch Sturman asked me to compose a piece to commemorate our mutual friend, composer Elliot Del Borgo, who passed only a week after he had conducted his commissioned works at 2013's Concert of Premieres at Wilson Junior High School in El Centro, CA. The result was the Passacaglia and Fughetta in Memoriam Elliot Del Borgo (1938-2013). The two sections were originally conceived as two separate ideas, hoping one would come to fruition. Both sections began to take root, so eventually the two pieces were combined into a single piece. At Mr. Sturman's suggestion, the passacaglia begins with the three initials of Mr. Del Borgo.

It consists of six short pieces written or revised between 1893 and 1896, to mark the birthdays and other events in the life of the daughter of the composer's mistress, Emma Bardac.An orchestral version of the suite was scored in 1906 by Henri Rabaud, and has, like the original piano duet version, been the subject of many recordings. The best-known section of the suite, the Berceuse, has been arranged for several combinations of instruments. In the United Kingdom it became famous as the play-out tune to the BBC radio programme Listen with Mother.The suite consists of six short pieces, each with its own title: Berceuse, Mi-a-ou, Le jardin de Dolly, Kitty-valse, Tendresse, and Le pas espagnol. The complete suite takes about fifteen minutes to perform.The Berceuse was the closing theme for the long-running BBC Light Programme (and later Home Service) radio programme for small children Listen with Mother (1950–1982). It is performed in the film Bicentennial Man by Andrew and Little Miss. Although it was written as a piano duet, there have been numerous arrangements of the Berceuse for other instruments and ensembles. Before this, he was a founding member of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, as well as playing with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. When he is not spending time with his wife of 46 years, his three middle-aged children, and his two grandchildren, he spends his time and energy teaching, writing, arranging, and performing.Five Australian Scenes for String Orchestra was conceived with specific iconic Australian places in mind, as well as with the intention to convey the experience of these places programmatically through the music. From this point of view, the pieces could have just as successfully been called Australian Days. As such, each piece represents a kind of day journey in microcosm, like a travel diary set to music. The points of interest in each day are indicated sequentially in the music.The pieces were written with the intermediate student string orchestra in mind. As such, they explore a wide variety of string techniques, dynamic and tonal contrasts, styles, and moods. Although the writing never takes a student out of first position barring a few cello passages, and the fingering avoids the use of cello forward extensions and minimises high 3s for the upper strings, the technical, rhythmic, ensemble, and intonational challenges put these pieces at the intermediate level. There are ossias and other alternatives for greater challenge or greater ease. Fingering has been offered where appropriate. And bowing has been meticulously indicated.This particular piece, “A Day at the Beach,†is set in Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast in QLD. On a perfect summer day, one heads for the beach where fun and games, swimming, surfing, sun-baking, a picnic, and more games are the order of the day before heading home, full of sand, sun, food, and tired satisfaction.
