Written in 2024, Romance for String Orchestra is unabashedly tonal piece based on music from my compositions Romance for Orchestra (1982) and Pasacalle Triste (2024). Romance for Orchestra was composed as my undergraduate thesis at The Boston Conservatory of Music and has since writhed in obscurity. One understands why, though: various passages sound like juvenilia. Still, others sound a good deal stronger, and it is those passages that I have rescued, and which are featured in Romance for String Orchestra. Newly composed passages bracket and are intertwined with older ones, many of which are here transposed. Though just a smattering when compared to the number of passages borrowed from Romance for Orchestra, the ones borrowed from Pasacalle Triste nonetheless provide a meaningful creative arc manifested in one composition, and they provide just the right touches during various sequential passages. Speaking of sequences, Romance for Orchestra contains what is for my oeuvre the most expansive sequence I have composed to date; in both cases that sequence leads to the formal recapitulation of the main theme in the tonic key C Minor. Debussy criticised Satie's music for lack of form--there is a story that Satie showed these pieces to Debussy who asked, ‘Why such a title?’ He replied Because you cannot criticize my Three Pieces in the shape of a Pear. If they are in the form of a pear they cannot be shapeless. Poire had the slang meanings of fool and spinning top--Satie is famous for playing the fool --he said Take my ... Morceaux en Forme d’une Poire... it is evident that musical ideas played no part whatsoever in their composition. First performed by Anita Aslin with Hessle Sinfonia, Alan Edgar conducting.

Add a touch of blues to your string orchestra repertoire with this lazy ‘ole’ tune in the style of early Duke Ellington, at the time he was playing New York’s Cotton Club. In this type of number, Ellington typically used three clarinets playing a harmonised melody, which is why this tune, Harlem Love Call, works well with a string orchetra, the three clarinets being replaced by violins 1, violins 2 and violas. The celli and basses play a supporting role and propel everything along. Play it in a lazy fashion and bend a few notes here and there if you wish. It’s that kind of piece. Note that it starts quietly at A and increases in volume through B and C. It quietens down at D and E is quieter still (pianissimo) through to the end. Length 2.30 mins.

Published by Taggart Press (A0.1017599). The groundbreaking Broadway Musical Showboat arguably changed the Broadway theater forever when it premiered in 1927. With music by Jerome Kern and a book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, the show deals with themes of racism, alcoholism, and spousal desertion at a time when social ills were not even a remote part of the typical Broadway fare. Kern's score was well received and contains many familiar songs like Ol' Man River. Make Believe, and Why do I love you?. But after Ol' Man River, It is probably the charming and poignant Bill that is most familiar to modern audiences. This arrangement gives the melody to a solo Alto Saxophone with a string accompaniment that preserves the early 20th-century feel of the original. It will work great on a pops concert, or as a lighter encore to a more serious saxophone concerto.
