String Orchestra - Intermediate - Digital Download Composed by trad. Arranged by Keith Terrett. 20th Century, European, Patriotic. Score, Set of Parts. 10 pages. Published by Music for all Occasions
Londonderry Air arranged for String Orchestra.<br> <br> A big band version of the song is used as the theme for The Danny Thomas Show (a.k.a. Make Room For Daddy).<br> <br> "Danny Boy" was used to represent Northern Ireland at the start of the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony, sung by a choir of children on the Giant’s Causeway.<br> <br> On November 25, 2014, the Vancouver Canucks used the song in honor of the recently deceased Pat Quinn, who played and worked in many executive capacities for the team.<br> <br> There are various theories as to the true meaning of "Danny Boy". Some listeners have interpreted the song to be a message from a parent to a son going off to war or leaving as part of the Irish diaspora.<br> <br> The 1918 version of the sheet music included alternative lyrics ("Eily Dear"), with the instructions that "when sung by a man, the words in italic should be used; the song then becomes "Eily Dear", so that "Danny Boy" is only to be sung by a lady". In spite of this, it is unclear whether this was Weatherly’s intent.<br> <br> Why the name Londonderry Air? Londonderry and Derry refer to the same place, a city in the north of Ireland, and also to the surrounding county. Supposedly the city of Derry was founded by St. Colmcille, although archaeological evidence shows that people were living there thousands of years earlier. There is an excellent museum in the city, which is worth a visit if you want to find out more. The name of the city was actually "Doire", corrupted to "Derry" by people who can’t pronounce Irish. It thought to derive from an Irish root meaning "oak tree".<br> <br> Moving quickly along in history, about a millenium later the government of England was having a difficult time colonizing Ireland because of the fierce and warlike clans living there, especially in the north of the country, Ulster. The monarchs of England, almost all of whom were notorious cheapskates, were continually looking about for ingenious ways to conquer places without actually having to put up the money themselves, or run the risk of unpopularity if they lost. In the case of Ireland, some of these schemes of the "Brish gummit" (as it is termed nowadays in Ulster) are still producing unfortunate long-term consequences.<br> <br> In 1608, King James I gave the city of Derry to the City of London corporation. I guess the deal could be summed up by saying that if the City of London could figure out a way to chase all the inhabitants out of Derry, they would be allowed to keep the loot, minus a percentage for the King of course. If they lost, well too bad. In celebration of this historic agreement, the name of Derry was officially changed to Londonderry. (For further information, check out the Northern Ireland Tourist Board’s History of Derry.)<br> <br> The linguistic outcome of all this today is that, if you think that King James’s deal with the City of London was a good idea, you call both the city and county "Londonderry". If you do, you are probably a supporter of the Unionist movement that seeks to keep Ulster a part of the United Kingdom. If you think it was a bad idea, you call both "Derry", and you are probably a supporter of the Irish Nationalist cause. Or you might just be someone who thinks it’s confusing for kings to be going around changing the names of places all the time for no good reason.<br> <br> You can find plenty of discussion about the political side of the question elsewhere, but here let’s look at the musical side. We have an air, collected in county Derry/Londonderry, and it doesn’t have a title. What do we call it?<br> <br> If you were a proper Victorian, there’s no way you were going to call it the Londonderry Air, much less the Derry Air, because of the improper sentiments that these titles might suggest. My parents tell me that in their youth in Australia, it was usually called the Air from County Derry. (This would, I suppose, support Winston Churchill’s theory that Australia was inhabited by "convicts and Irishmen".)<br> <br> My mother also sends the following information, referring to an arrangement of the tune by the Australian composer Percy Grainger:<br> <br> Just another note about Danny Boy, that I grew up in Australia believing to be the Air from County Derry. We were looking through some LP’s last night (back to vinyl yet!) and found a Mercury Wing Classical Favorites stereo LP SRW18060, COUNTRY GARDENS and other favorites by Percy Grainger {played by} Eastman-Rochester Pops, Frederick Fennell, conducting. The cover notes included the following: "Irish Tune from County Derry was harmonised in memory of Irish childhood friends in Australia." Considered by many to be Grainger’s masterpiece of harmonization, the tune was collected many years ago by Miss Jane Ross of New Town, Limavady, Ireland. Grainger has set it for many instrumental combinations. So there’s another variant on the name for it. It doesn’t say who wrote the notes, but the bits in quotes for each of the works on the record are Grainger’s original comments.<br> <br> The references to Londonderry Air that I’ve seen don’t go back any earlier than the late 1930s. For example, the Glenn Miller Orchestra recorded Danny Boy (Londonderry Air) in February 1940. Bing Crosby’s version was recorded in July 1941 (reference). (So many different things I could check up on!) Londonderry was an important American naval base during WWII, but the US hadn’t come into the war in 1940.<br> <br> Need an anthem fast? They are ALL in my store! All my anthem arrangements are also available for Orchestra, Recorders, Saxophones, Wind, Brass and Flexible band. If you need an anthem urgently for an instrumentation not in my store, let me know via e-mail, and I will arrange it for you FOC if possible! keithterrett@gmail.com<br> <br> Contact Publisher Related Scores

Donut Etudes vol. 3: Don’t Step in the Holes! – String Orchestra

String Orchestra - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.784349 Composed by Joshua Hauser. Instructional. Score and parts. 146 pages. Slide Ride #5288707. Published by Slide Ride (A0.784349). 1 Octave Scale Studies in 15+ keys for 4-part ensembles of like or mixed instruments If this is your first exposure to these scale studies, you are in for a treat! Donuts, if you make a mistake! The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent. As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.· Choose a tempo.· Choose a dynamic.· Choose an articulation/style.One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes. The variations are endless! If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys. All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!Enjoy!Combine these with the set for Band when used for Full or Chamber Orchestra.

String Orchestra - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1319136 Composed by Josef Gabriel Rheinberger. Arranged by Leonard Ingrande. Chamber,Classical,Contest,Early Music,Festival. 14 pages. Ingrande Music Production #907768. Published by Ingrande Music Production (A0.1319136). This piece featrures phrasing with combined legato and detache techniques. Â Furthermore, the slow tempo and long phrases require a thoughtful and well-controlled use of the bow. Imitative voices traded between instruments invite each section to articulate their entrances thus keeping the forward motion alive. Â Finally, although the dynamics remain mostly in the reange of p or mp--mf or f, there are moments of ff and pp (especially at the end) with crescendo and diminuendo markings throughout which are crucial for bringing out the expressive and poetic nature of the piece.

String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1201464 By Vessela Stoyanova. By Vessela Stoyanova. Folk,Multicultural,World. Score and parts. 89 pages. Vessela Stoyanova #798931. Published by Vessela Stoyanova (A0.1201464). “Mountain Goats and Other Creatures†was Commissioned by Rachel Jayson and the Lexington High School Symphony Orchestra. It was inspired by the folk music of my native land of Bulgaria, informed by my experience as a rock musician, reimagined through the lense of my place inside of a community of like-minded artists and musicians, where I have made my real home today. The first movement - Mountain Goats - is a sort of celebration of renewal, promise, and hope. It represents the tenacious will of grass growing through the snow of early spring, the powerful longing for human connection, the warmth of the sun against your skin on a bright chilly day. It carries both the pristine optimism of youth, and the nervous energy of trying something for the first time. The second movement - Samodivi - in contrast is dark, heavy and full of passion and desire. According to Balkan myths, Samodivi are gorgeous nymphs who live in the woods and often seduce men with their beautiful song and dance. They are feared and envied at the same time. The music of the second movement represents the mysterious dark forest at night - lower strings create the moss under your feet, higher strings use extended techniques to simulate the noise of branches clicking the wind, a few soloists represent different creatures - both real and imaginary - scurry through the woods above your head. Then you hear the lone song of a Samodiva in the distance, your heart is beating hard, your steps are leading you straight towards the call against your better judgement. It is the ancient story of fear and desire, of self control and complete abandon. You, the listener, become witness to a wild dance, fire in the woods, snakes in their long blond hairs, slender bodies dressed in white clouds dancing to an imaginary beat.  Then it all ends abruptly and you left to wonder: Was it real? Did I see it? Am I safe? The third and final movement of the piece is based on a popular rhythmic folk dance in Bulgaria called Kopanitsa, while the melody creates a fugue between the different voices of the orchestra. The Kids are the little of the mountain goats - free to frolic high above tree line, above any human traces, as close to the clouds as one can get and still be touching the ground below. They are carefree, daring, and somewhat naive, yet safe under the watchful gaze of their parent. The movements ends in cascading repetitions of a musical motif in 5/8 representing the relentless passing of time or at least our perception of it.

The Abduction of Persephone (for String Orchestra)

String Orchestra - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.998356 Composed by Aaron Fonz…

String Orchestra - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.998356 Composed by Aaron Fonzi. Children,Contemporary,Rock,Standards. Score and parts. 27 pages. Aaron Fonzi #3367893. Published by Aaron Fonzi (A0.998356). This piece tells the epic story of Hades' abduction of his niece, Persephone. According to the legend, Hades came up through a crack in the ground and snatched the girl while she was playing. In the Underworld, he tried to seduce her in a variety of ways, but to no avail. Finally, Hades is said to have tricked her into staying by offering her a tempting pomegranate. As Persephone ate 6 seeds, she was to stay in the Underworld for six months each year. It is said that while Persphone is in the Underworld, the plants wither and die, and when she comes back to the surface she brings rebirth to growing things. This piece begins with playful pizzicato lines that build upon each other. These represent Persphone at play, but forebodes the dark forces that are encircling her. When the orchestra goes to arco, Persphone is being dragged into the Underworld. A mournful violin solo signifies her arrival, but this mournful theme is quickly replace by the devious seductions of Hades in the form of a humorous waltz. Finally, Hades offers the pomegranate to Persephone and she eats 6 seeds (represented by the six beats of the B major chord in measures 76 and 77). The main theme then takes over once again, modulating to F# minor to represent Hades' victory. With relentless energy, catchy ostinati and opportunities to work on shifting, pizzicato and arco throughout, this piece will not dissapoint for audiences and students alike. A FEW NOTES: 1. I'd recommend rehearsing the rhythms of recurring ostinati together- first pizzicato then arco. You may get creative and incorporate scales with these rhythms. However you do it, it'll be important that each ostinato is played with precision and confidence. 2. Have fun with the waltz section! It's meant to portray the strange, whimsical nature of Hades' attempts to woo Persephone, so the awkwardness in delivery is encouraged! 3. All ritardandos should be exaggerated for the sake of drama. 4. Encourage your drumset player to explore different ways of accompanying the orchestra- the drumset part is a blueprint, not definitive instructions. 5. Be sure to practice shifting into 2nd position for the modulation. I hope you and your students have a great time putting this epic piece together! I had a ton of fun writing it! ~Aaron Fonzi

The American Seasons (score – violin and string orchestra) MO148AScore (parts available)Music by Mark O’Connor99 pages - 38:00 minutes in length The American Seasons(Seasons Of An American Life)The American Seasons (Seasons Of An American Life) is a concerto for Violin And Chamber Orchestra. Composed in 1999, the music celebrates the various stages of an American life at the waking of the 21st century. Constructed in four movements and representing four stages of life, birth, adolescence, maturity and old age, the music also pays homage to Shakespeare's Seasons Of Man His acts being seven ages, incorporated throughout the work.Spring introduces the ideas of birth and infancy. After the principal theme has been stated, there is a violin cadenza encountering all twelve major keys and a 13/8 time signature representing the ancient golden ratio. These elements recall birth with all the possibilities a new life offers. Ending the movement, the principal theme is repeated with more complexity... as if posing life's questions.Summer represents the excitement and bravado of youthful adolescence and young adulthood. For the style of this movement I use a happy-go-lucky Blues voice which melds into Swing. I identify swing rhythm in all of 20th century American music culture as a common thread that runs through Ragtime through Rock and Roll on to Rap. Swing means testing the waters and pushing the envelope for lovers and soldiers.Fall is the slow movement symbolizing the wisdom of maturity. It is a peaceful theme with nostalgic strokes. It is a time for sincere reflection and enjoying ones accomplishments in life.Winter embodies the complexities and knowledge of an older person and that of a dying person. The movement begins with the principal them from Spring, but with a dissonance that emanates from a lifetime full of emotions and responsibilities. In the middle of the movement is a transition to an old world. I use my personal ancestry from Ireland as a foundation from which to rediscover one's lineage and explore the meaning and value of a cultural legacy. The exploration evolves into a four- and five-part fugue with a reel, jig, air, countered bass and the motif from the principal theme. All these elements, dances and melodies appear simultaneously and converge to form a unique insight to life's consequences from a historical perspective. Following the fugue, the principal theme finds its way back in. It sounds much as it did at birth. In the end, the solo violin cadenza carries the last earthly breaths before the violin and orchestra once again join in harmony to focus on a new life being transformed somewhere else. Life's four seasons in perpetuity. VERSATILE Titles that include four parts are written with the idea that they can be performed with 1, 2, 3 or 4 musicians. Most of the contemporary/popular titles include a chord chart for a bass instrument. PRACTICE needs would vary according to the level of the performers but my goal is to be sight-readable for most performers and groups. AUDIO SAMPLE The 30 second mp3 is frequently shortened and may not start at the introduction to get to the reprise. The actual introduction will be in the sheet music. LISTENABILITY I have performed thousands of weddings and special events. I make it a goal for the music to carry as well as possible through loud and large space situations. String Orchestra - Digital Download SKU: A0.532834 Composed by Therese Brenet. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 39 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #45419. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.532834). Thérèse Brenet was attracted to the Chinese poems in La Flûte de Jade by Franz Toussaint. She chose seven of these poems in a contrasting style and assembled them into a single work, striving to create an unusual orchestration which reflects this delicate, fantastic and sensual qualities of these poems. Her orchestration uses a small group of strings which are re-enforced by a harpsichord, a vibraphone, a harp and percussion, often superimposed, which serve to underline the delicate character of the poems. IN addition, she uses all styles of vocal production, from whispered passages to spoken words or screams, and from singing normally to sprechgesang. The work finishes serenely with a long melody in flute upon which the baritone repeats the last phrases of the poem in a long perdendosi. The voice and the flute slowly die away without there being a definite ending to the work, which allow the listener to imagine that the work continues, as in a waking dream. One could imagine hearing the echo of the words whispered by the baritone and the arien and luminous sounds of the flute which has lulled us as a soloist throughout the seven poems of the cycle. The orchestration is for 4 percussion, harp, harpsichord, piano and strings (44221). The piece generally lasts approximately fourteen minutes. The composer has intentionally broken with tradition by using instrumental notation for the vovcal part. This notations gives, in her view, a greater ease of reading when the voice exchanges with the flute. This version for flute, voice and piano is identical, as much as is possible, with the orchestral version, excpet for short segments in the 5th and 7th poems. These differences only affect the flute and piano parts and do not affect the vocal part. The Baritone may therefore use this score for performances with orchestra. The Flutist should use the part included in the orchestral parts for performances with orchestra. This work was first performed at the Villa Medicis during Thérèse Brenet time spend there during her Prix de Rome voyage. It was recorded in 2014 with Kurt Ollmann Baritone, Christel Rayneau, flute and the National Polish Radio Orchestra under the direction of Paul Wehage. The orchestral materials are on rental from the publisher.

String Orchestra - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1080623 Composed by Matt Arnett. Classical,Contemporary. Score and parts. 8 pages. Matt Arnett Music #684841. Published by Matt Arnett Music (A0.1080623). This is a really fun piece that will challenge but be achievable at the end of the first year. Everything stays in standard 1st position fingerings with mostly stepwise motion with skips to open strings, though there are a few quicker notes to challenge the left hand. There's a lot of interplay between the high and low voices, which gives each section the opportunity to work on listening to the whole ensemble and counting through rests. Rhythms will be mostly straightforward for this level, with one syncopated example at 24 - I like to teach this rhythm with the text Pass the tasty chocolate chip cookie. Last, there's some fun unusual techniques, including a glissando in the cello/bass and the instructions to Start high on the (E/A/D) string and play 8 notes, each lower than the last for upper strings. These should be kept random, chaotic, and fun. I hope your students enjoy The Gladiator!

String Orchestra - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1414027 Composed by Martin Lass. Chamber,Children,Classical,Instructional. 43 pages. MA Lass & I Lass #995794. Published by MA Lass & I Lass (A0.1414027). Martin Lass is an Australian violinist, composer, arranger, and teacher. He is most well known for his performance career as a classical crossover and popular music artist with 11 CD recordings, numerous awards and accolades, and performances with the likes of Luciano Pavorotti, Julio Iglesias, and Joan Baez. Before this, he was a founding member of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, as well as playing with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. When he is not spending time with his wife of 46 years, his three middle-aged children, and his two grandchildren, he spends his time and energy teaching, writing, arranging, and performing.Five Australian Scenes for String Orchestra was conceived with specific iconic Australian places in mind, as well as with the intention to convey the experience of these places programmatically through the music. From this point of view, the pieces could have just as successfully been called Australian Days. As such, each piece represents a kind of day journey in microcosm, like a travel diary set to music. The points of interest in each day are indicated sequentially in the music. The pieces were written with the intermediate student string orchestra in mind. As such, they explore a wide variety of string techniques, dynamic and tonal contrasts, styles, and moods. Although the writing never takes a student out of first position barring a few cello passages, and the fingering avoids the use of cello forward extensions and minimises high 3s for the upper strings, the technical, rhythmic, ensemble, and intonational challenges put these pieces at the intermediate level. There are ossias and other alternatives for greater challenge or greater ease. Fingering has been offered where appropriate. And bowing has been meticulously indicated. This particular piece, “A Day at the Beach,†is set in Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast in QLD. On a perfect summer day, one heads for the beach where fun and games, swimming, surfing, sun-baking, a picnic, and more games are the order of the day before heading home, full of sand, sun, food, and tired satisfaction.

Many people spend their leisure time at the lake. Â Some spend the time on shore and others venture out in their boat. Â Spending time on the lake is a great way to shed the thoughts and worries of life, at least for a little while, and just relax. Â This piece attempts to capture the serenity of a peaceful day on the lake. The total duration is about 4 minutes. In addition to the excellent review in 2001 issue of The American String Teacher Journal, this piece was selected, through national competition, for performance at the Living Composers Concert held in Wisconsin in 2005. Fajora Music #716809. Published by Fajora Music (A0.1114979). Since antiquity, from the Renaissance to the Baroque to the present day, the legend of the fabulous empire of women at the Black Sea has stirred the imagination of mankind and has been expressed in works of music, art, literature and film for centuries. It was decisive in naming the largest river and rainforest in South America when the early Spanish conquerors believed the first humans they saw there were Amazons. Since the 2000s, the topic has also become the focus of feminist research and, remarkably, has also given its name to one of the world's largest high-tech corporations, AMAZON. THE AMAZONS - Myth and Projection thematize elements of this background in a musical way in a work for string orchestra or string quintet. Powerful, pathetic and emphatically rhythmic figures refer to the ancient description of this self-confident, strong and warlike equestrian people. They alternate with baroque, polyphonic and lyrical scenes, like a journey through time with a look back through the centuries. String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.742492 Composed by George Frideric Handel. Arranged by Arte Nova Music Lab. Baroque,Concert,Standards,World. Score and parts. 57 pages. Arte Nova Music Lab #5041947. Published by Arte Nova Music Lab (A0.742492). Around the year 1726, John Walsh, a London music publisher, created a wonderful forgery in order to run around the copyright laws of the day: he pretended to pirate an edition supposedly published by the House of Roger in Amsterdam. This forgery included 12 Sonatas for solo instrument and continuo which had been composed by one George Frideric Handel (1685-1759). Around 1793 the House of Arnold published the same set, omitting two of the original 12 and replacing them with two others by Handel. So at this point there were a total of 14 solo sonatas available to the public. In the year 1879 Friedrich Chrysander issued these 14 works and several others in volume 27 of the German Handel Society’s Gesamtausgabe of Handel’s works. Since then they have been edited from this scholarly work many times, and afflicted by all sorts of permutations which reflect the various styles of performance in vogue over the years. One finds editions stripped of ornamentation but loaded with articulation and dynamic markings at one end of the spectrum, and editions with modest stenographic and florid ornamentation at the other. The Sonata in C Minor (London: 1712) is a pure example of the middle phase of the solo sonata da chiesa [church sonata]. The first three movements are indicative of the style found in sonatas derived from the disruptive canzona of the early 17th century. An initial slow movement with walking bass is followed by an imitative movement (in this case, a fugue with a chromatic subject), which in turn leads to an Adagio. This latter movement in the relative major is a ricercare containing several imitative entrances. The finale is a spirited binary-form Bourrée angloise, an item taken over from the French ordre or dance suite. The extraordinarily short length of this movement seems to indicate that a trio is missing here; therefore, I have added the bourrée from the Royal Fireworks Music of 1749 to act as a trio, but players are certainly free to omit it. Adding a series of variations based on the chord changes of the Bourrée angloise would be an alternative way to lend weight to this final movement.Taken from https://www.idrs.org/scores/Lehrer/DRArch/69HandelSonataCm.html

String Orchestra - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.510277 Composed by Hugo Goodwin. Arranged by Alex Phillips-Yates. 20th Century,Classical,Multicultural,World. Score and parts. 17 pages. North Node Music #3563529. Published by North Node Music (A0.510277). This dramatic tone poem by Hugo Goodwin (1883-1936) was written for organ in 1919. The following text tells the story of the music, and was included in the original publication:At night, in the depths of the Great North Woods, we sit by the blazing camp-fire and hear the legend of the Indian maiden who to save her people offers herself as a living sacrifice to the Great Spirit. On the rushing waters she embarks in her canoe, and standing erect and fearless is whirled along faster and faster until she plunges to her death over mighty Niagara. At this point in the story, the fire mysteriously leaps up, then as quickly dies down, and the thick velvety darkness of the forest again wraps us in its pall. This arrangement for string orchestra can be performed with or without double bass, but all of the other parts divide for much of the piece, so a minimum of 8 players are required. The total running time is approx. 5 minutes, making it a short but entertaining addition to any programme. This arrangement was first performed by the String Orchestra of the Lancaster Community Music Centre, Lancashire, UK.
