Here we have that broken octave figure split into two voices, the cello and bass. Thus, no one section has to keep alternating up and down. The tune is a Shubertian sort of easy-going, elegant song. It is harmonized with as much color as the basic scalar melody can absorb, without getting too radical in its tonal range. The final section uses two dotted quarters in each measure instead of three plain quarter-notes. Bowings are by string pedagogue Lori Sandell Lacey. Running time at the suggested tempo is 3 mins. The piece CAN go faster should your group be up to that task! Remember, ALL notes are in 1st position for all sections, no trills or fast passages across strings, all standard up and down bowings, no pizzicato or divisi. Makes a nice opening piece, or the end of the first section of a two-part program. MBB.

This part song, composed in 1907 when Elgar was on holiday in Rome, is unusual in that the upper voices are written in the key of A flat major while the lower voices are in G major. The composition is very suited to strings where the violins take the upper parts and the violas, cellos and basses take the lower parts. This is a really fun piece that will challenge but be achievable at the end of the first year. Everything stays in standard 1st position fingerings with mostly stepwise motion with skips to open strings, though there are a few quicker notes to challenge the left hand. There's a lot of interplay between the high and low voices, which gives each section the opportunity to work on listening to the whole ensemble and counting through rests. Rhythms will be mostly straightforward for this level, with one syncopated example at 24 - I like to teach this rhythm with the text Pass the tasty chocolate chip cookie. Last, there's some fun unusual techniques, including a glissando in the cello/bass and the instructions to Start high on the (E/A/D) string and play 8 notes, each lower than the last for upper strings. These should be kept random, chaotic, and fun. I hope your students enjoy The Gladiator!
