A couple of lifetimes ago (or so it seems now) I wrote a quartet of sonatas: one apiece for flute, viola, oboe, and the present work for cello. I thought of them as representing Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter respectively. This one, dating from 1972, expands the concept of a rondo to dimensions covering an entire multi-movement sonata. There are the traditional three movements one would expect to find, but they are tied together through unmetered sections for solo cello set between them. In this way, the true movements almost function as episodes in a giant rondo. Additionally, the solo interpolations form an entity in themselves, each picking up where the previous one left off. And if that weren’t enough, thematic material in the real movements is often first presented in the Interpolations, so it is difficult to tell where an idea really belongs. Given my philosophical leanings at the time (it was the 70s, remember!), this ambiguity was precisely the point.Performance time is approximately 12 minutes.

The opening is plaintive in the piano and then joined in with a counter-tune where it then presents the theme in a straight-forward manner. The next section uses the counter-theme again and then presents the theme in an embellished manner. Again the counter-theme is present followed by the embellished theme. After a brief interlude the piece picks up again with the counter-theme where it slowly and quietly settles in repose.

Salut D'Amour (Liebesgruss) for Violoncello and Piano - as played by YO YO MA and Kathryn Stott.Edward Elgar’s Salut d’amour is one of those pieces by the British composer that has a particularly haunting melody. Composed in 1888 for his future wife Caroline Alice Roberts, the work became an enormous success early on. There are numerous arrangements – but the only versions for which the autograph manuscripts survive are those for Violin and Piano, Piano solo and Violoncello and Piano. Up to now there has only been an arrangement of the cello part made by the original publisher, presumably with Elgar’s approval. This score was written based on the beautiful record 'Songs of the Arc of Life' by YO YO MA (cello) and Kathryn Stott (piano). Enjoy!Advanced Intermeiate level.Format: Concert, 9 x 12 inches.9 pages.

It takes the cello up into its higher register, and covers a wide range of dynamics and expression, and the melody is not quite as straightforward as it sounds. The accompaniment gives the piece a Latin feel, rather like a habanera.There is no doubling between the piano and cello, which makes it ideal as an exam piece, but also means the cello part can be played without the piano if necessary.

Evocation has at times a melancholy feel, but there are uplifting moments, and the final chord is major, so this piece should not be dispiriting. The only technically challenging aspect will be the range – plenty of high tenor clef writing, right up to the G one-and-a-half octaves above middle C in the “quasi cadenzaâ€.
