He is often referred to as J. B. Foerster, and his surname is sometimes spelled Förster.-Life-Foerster was born in Prague. His ancestors were of Bohemian German ethnicity, but had assimilated into the Czech community. The family normally lived in Prague and was musical. His father, a composer also named Josef Foerster, taught at the Conservatory. (His father's students included Franz Lehár.) His brother was artist Viktor Foerster. Josef was educated accordingly, and duly studied there.-Style-Foerster produced numerous compositions. His music is not nationalistic in the sense of employing the idioms of Czech folk music. Die Grundidee war, verschiedene Kombinationen der drei Instrumente zu verwenden und so ganz unterschiedliche Charaktere und Bewegungsformen zu bekommen, die aber trotzdem insgesamt eine Einheit bilden. So gibt es ein Stück für Cello solo, eines für Violine und Klavier, eines für Violine und Cello etc. Am Anfang, in der Mitte und am Ende stehen verschiedene Varianten eines schnellen Satzes für alle drei Instrumente, die eine Art Refrain bilden. Schott Music - Digital #Q6340. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6340). The Finnish word ‘Marraskuu’ means ‘November’; furthermore, ‘marras’ means sth. like ‘dull, dead, waste’. Marraskuu is a homage to one of my favourite seasons, so the title should not mislead to primarily dark and gloomy associations. Completed in November 1998 in Helsinki, the piano trio was premiered by the Trio Présence (E. Windrich, G. Waterhouse, M. Wendeberg) in November 1999 and thoroughly revised in Paris in November 2004. The less clear expression and one-dimensional developments will be found, the more the listener’s attention will be sharpened to small details: melody fragments, some virtuoso textures, and Kondukt-like passages. Moreover, the composition involves a certain degree of freedom and sleaziness, which is, among others, the result of sections enabling the players to choose their entries in a certain time frame. That’s where the detailed precision of the notation offers some kind of counterweight, holding players off a too ‘educated’ performance.

In this trio, as in most of his compositions, Jost has pictures and associations with true incidents, films and novels in his mind. What inspired him to write this piece was Joseph Conrad's novel 'Heart of Darkness' in which the protagonist Marlow says about the city of Brussels: 'In a few hours I arrived in a city that always make me think of a whited sepulchre.' In 'Sepulchral City', a work commissioned to mark the tenth anniversary of the Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival, however, the title refers to Jerusalem, the city of white tombs. The topic of Jost's trio is a travel into the soul and living spirit of a city, with no physical movement being needed to find the heart of impenetrable darkness: It lies within the city walls. This Piano Trio Passacaglia is the “junior†companion piece to my Cello Concerto Dunkle Saiten [Dark Strings], or more precisely to the concerto’s large-dimensional introductory section with the indication “Feierlich, schreitend†[solemnly, striding]. What in the Cello concerto then inescapably culminates in a catastrophe remains in this composition ostensibly largely conflict-free. This is in fact perhaps one of my most peaceful and conflict-free compositions; it consists of half an hour of almost exclusively tonal progressions. Here, passacaglia (stepping dance!) is taken literally: the step progressions themselves become the subject of the work. This also includes pausing, not being able to progress, feeling one’s way, stumbling and taking compulsive steps forward.As familiar as the harmonic surface of the structure appears, for me the natural adaptation of the musical flow was new to a similar degree. This is my attempt to produce a linear tonal band (a horizontal) exclusively with the aid of harmonic – i.e. vertical – progressions.- Jörg Widmann.
