Downton Abbey was a much loved TV series that ran for six seasons capturing the hearts of many across the world. The composer of the music, John Lunn, won two Primetime Emmys for the hauntingly beautiful score. I have arranged this wonderful piece for violin and piano, as well as for cello and piano, and string quartet/string orchestra. The 30 sec clip is done on Sibelius software as I have not yet been able to record this piece live, but if you search my Youtube Channel, Skinny Black Dogs, Capriccio Quartet, you can see and hear the live version. The harmony and structure is exactly the same.
The piece is suitable for Grade 5 ABRSM and above as it will need to make use of some positions other than first position, though open strings could be used too in lots of places. The tempo I have chosen for the clip is fast but it could also be played much slower without losing impact. At Bar 11 the cellist will need to change the bow discreetly when it runs out. This was great fun to arrange so I hope you enjoy playing it.

The melody is abridged to avoid tricky modulations and has been transposed to the more manageable key of A minor. It can be played entirely in 1st position and requires the use of some extensions to reach G#. The piano accompaniment sparsely doubles the melody and includes a fun glissando at the end. Thoughtful bowings and dynamics have been included throughout. This makes an excellent addition to your fall/holiday repertoire! The Race, for cello and piano, is a fresh, virtuoso piece written by Carlo Alfredo Piatti (1822—1901) to celebrate his successful recovery from a long period of illness which kept him away from his beloved cello and from the concert stage. A short introduction by the piano serves as a countdown to a funny chase where the cellist needs to keep the bow in check at every turn to avoid losing control. Left-hand is clearly challenging at this speed, but Piatti’s masterful writing makes the learning path a very rewarding one. This publication is the third one celebrating the 200th anniversary of Piatti’s birth, and comes in a single file containing both the score and two versions of the cello part. One follows faithfully the composer’s manuscript, while the second provides fingering suggestions by Raphaël Pidoux, professor at the CNSM in Paris.

The cello plays the melody while the piano covers harmonization and rhythm. It is a true piano accompaniment in that it does not double the melody throughout. It is written in the original key of G Major and follows the roadmap of Taylor's Version. The solo can be played entirely in first position. Helpful bowings have been included.
