It is impossible to imagine today's cello lessons without the works by Jean-Baptiste Breval (1753-1823).

This sonata is the first of the Six Sonates non difficiles pour le violoncelle Op. 40 (1795). To this day it remains popular among cello teachers and pupils alike. Because of its comfortable tonality and technical simplicity, it is an interesting classical sonata for cello students who are experienced in playing in first position and do not shy away from occasional excursions into other positions.

As a performance piece, the sonata can be accompanied either by a second cello, as in Breval's original version, by piano, or even by both instruments. .

The sonata is particularly suitable for music lessons and concertos in the popular version for violoncello and piano by Joachim Stutschewsky, which was revised for the Schott Student Edition by Rainer Mohrs and edited and prefaced by Beverly Ellis.

Hugo Schlemuller (1872-1919), pianist, teacher and music writer, taught violoncello in the preparatory school of Dr. Hoch's Conservatoire in Frankfurt. During this time, he wrote numerous works for violoncello lessons for beginners, among them the easy performance pieces Op. 12.
The pieces with piano accompaniment are playable in the first close position throughout and are suitable for students at the end of the first year of training who also wish to master a few little musically demanding challenges from time to time.

Bernhard Romberg (1767-1841) probably was the greatest cello virtuoso of his time and compared to Paganini in his lifetime. He gave cello lessons at the famous Conservatoire de Paris among others.
Romberg's popular Trio in E minor originally was the first part of the Trois Trios d'une Difficulte Progressive pour le Violoncelle Viola et Violoncelle Op. 38. The solo violoncello was accompanied by a viola and a second violoncello. The two other trios are much more difficult, with a lot of passage work, thumb position, tenor and violin clef.
The Trio in E minor Op. 38/1 was arranged many times and scored for various combinations of instruments. This edition refers to the popular arrangement for violoncello and piano by Friedrich Gustav Jansen (1837-1910) which is ideal for music lessons and concerts.
Also available is another arrangement of the Trio Op. 38/1 for three violoncellos (SE 1008). The easy bass part can be played by another student.

Volume 2 of the Cellissimo series contains 25 popular original pieces for cello and piano from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic eras and is a real treasure trove for advanced pupils, students, teachers and cello lovers.
The cello literature comprises a lot of major standard works for lessons, concerts and competitions. Apart from classics by Vivaldi, Breval, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Faure, or Saint-Saens, the volume also contains several lesser known pieces, e.g. by August Nolck (1862-1928) and Georg Goltermann (1824-1898).
The pieces are of medium technical difficulty which corresponds to grade 3-4 or grade 5-8 of the international examination system. Some pieces can be played in the 2nd to 7th position, while several works require putting the thumb under. All selected works are particularly suitable for the development of sound, vibrato, differentiated bowing technique, as well as the performer's personal interpretation and musical presentation.
