The melody is stated twice, firstly by the violin and secondly by the flute. An extended cadence concludes this characterful arrangement. This arrangement is ideal as a musical offering in any church service where this hymn is loved, it is also suitable as chamber music repertoire for High School music students and is early intermediate level in difficulty. English • German.Auguste Joseph Franchomme was born in Lille on 10.4.1808; he died in Paris in 1884. One of his first cello teachers in Lille was Pierre Baumann, who also taught Edouard Lalo. Giving up the study of Law in favour of the cello, he studied with Jean-Henri Levasseur and Louis-Pierre Norblin from 1825 at the Paris Conservatoire. After that he played in various orchestras until he was eventually able to establish himself as a soloist and chamber musician in Paris. Together with violinist Jean-Delphin Alard he founded the Alard Quartet, one of the few string quartets of the time whose members were all professional musicians. Alongside his concert career, Franchomme was a popular and successful professor at the Conservatoire for almost forty years. His compositions include numerous pieces and studies for the cello, a cello concerto and many transcriptions. Franchomme was a close friend of Chopin: he also composed the cello part to Chopin’s Duo concertante and reworked the cello part for the Polonaise Brillante. Chopin dedicated his Cello Sonata op. 65 to Franchomme. Chopin’s influence is clearly recognisable in Franchomme’s work and particularly evident, for example, in his Étude in C# minor op. 35/11. In 1884 Franchomme was awarded the Légion d’honneur for his services to music. This Fantaisie based on themes from Mozart’s Magic Flute was published in 1873 (plate no. 20425).

His music certainly appeals to musicians. Likewise, it appeals even to folks who don’t normally listen to serious music. This is probably because of his most memorable melodies. Above all, he writes with great emotion. This certainly makes a most noteworthy if not an unforgettable impact. Education First of all, He attended classes at the Russian Musical Society. Even more, He also attended the St. Petersburg Conservatory. There he studied music theory with Nikolai Zaremba. He also consequently studied composition with Anton Rubenstein. It seems like Rubenstein came under criticism from a group of Russian composers known as the Five. The Five The Five indeed rejected Western musical influences. They rather sought to use elements from Russian music. They furthermore wanted to use more exotic musical materials. Western Techniques More than other Russian composers, Tchaikovsky studied modern Western music. He certainly develops his music like the European masters. So, rather than repeating a motive, he moves to a new key. He then introduces a different theme in the new key. Hence, he maintained his independence from the Five. Even more, he became the first Russian composer of international stature. Influences Tchaikovsky was probably influenced in his ballet scoring by Léo Delibes. Richard Wagner influenced his symphonic writing. Tchaikovsky’s most famous works include the 1812 Overture, The Nutcracker Suite, and Swan Lake. Also famous are the Violin Concerto in D and the six symphonies. The greatest of the six symphonies may be No. 6, the Pathétique. Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a The Nutcracker Suite is a ballet performed for the first time in December 1892 in St. Petersburg. To begin with, the original ballet failed to attract a positive reception. However, the ballet suite became probably one of the most popular of all of Tchaikovsky’s works. The ballet suite became even more famous in the 1960s. It is now performed all over the world, particularly during the Christmas season.

The writer, John Newton, led a dissolute life as a sailor in the slave trade for many years before marriage, along with a close encounter with death at sea, dramatically changed his perspective. He lived out his later years as a devout and charismatic clergyman in the English countryside, renowned for his direct and personal style. The words he wrote in Amazing Grace are an intimate retelling of his spiritual journey. The hymn was written in 1773, and was sung to many different melodies initially, but since the mid nineteenth century it has become most closely associated with the famous folk tune melody presented here, New Britain.This version is arranged as a solo for Cello with Piano accompaniment. The melody is played four times, each verse in a different style. It was originally titled Sonata for Cello and Piano. As I composed similar works, I realized that, although I have used the concepts of sonata form in various movements, because these pieces reflect the drama of selected passages of the Bible, Tone Poem was a more fitting genre title. I have begun the process of transcribing these Tone Poems for additional instruments. I consider these Tone Poems as contemporary classical music. I have used modal harmonies; polychords and polytonality; free dissonance; atonality, mixed meters, etc. to convey the drama of the Bible. Sketches of Christ is based on 3 episodes from Christ’s Life: The calming of the Sea of Galilee, Mary and Martha, and the healing of the man born blind. This score is movement 3 of a 3 movement tone poem, originally scored and premiered as a sonata for Cello and Violin. It is presented here for 5 additional solo instruments: Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Euphonium (or Trombone) and Violin.  Sketches of Christ is written in 20th Century Classical Music composition techniques. Various movements employ a mix of bitonality, modal harmony, deliberate dissonance, and mixed meter. Each movement dramatizes an event form the Life of Christ. This movement expresses the interactions of the man born blind, Jewish authorities, and Jesus Christ from John 9.  The score shows the parts for cello and piano, but individual parts are provided for the other solo instruments.  Includes 14 scores: Full Score for cello and piano letter size; Cello, Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Euphonium (or trombone), and Violin solo parts; Full Score for cello and small page format for performing from a 10 inch tablet and the same solo parts for 10 inch tablet. tablet (Tell your computer which pages you want to print. Published by Thomas Groh (A0.1277909). „Maria durch ein Dornwald ging“ (Mary walks amid the thorns) is a wonderful German Advent hymn originating from the Eichsfeld region north of Eisenach in Thuringia. Its quite simple yet expressive melody thrills me already for a while. As my daughter learned to play the flute a few years ago, I decided to compose some variations for flute and piano on this hymn (with a quite easy part notably for the flute). The first sketch of the variations comprised the theme and simple versions of variations no. 1, 2, 5, 8 and 9. In summer 2016, I revised the initial variations and added the other ones; in summer 2023, I adapted them to the instrumentation of cello and piano.
