English • German.Cellist, conductor and composer Georg Goltermann, born in Hannover on 19.8.1824, died in Frankfurt (Main) on 29.12.1898, had cello lessons with the principal cellist of the royal court orchestra in Hanover, August Christian Prell (1805-1885), a pupil of Bernhard Romberg. From 1847-49 he continued his studies in Munich with the celebrated cellist Joseph Menter and studied composition with Ignaz Lachner, Director of Music at the court in Munich. Goltermann undertook numerous concert tours as a cellist; from 1853 he was Assistant Director of Music at the municipal theatre in Frankfurt am Main, becoming Director of Music from 1854. He wrote numerous pieces for cello and had a particular gift for the Romantic character piece, composing lyrical pieces with titles such as Ballade, Elegie, Song Without Words and various dances. As his compositions are generally not too demanding, they are well liked by amateur musicians and frequently used for tuition purposes. This Mazurka comes from the set of Trois morceaux caractéristiques op. 41, published by Schott in 1864 (plate no. 17419).

When Leoncavallo’s beautiful solo piece Brise de Mer (“Sea Breeze”) was first published in Berlin in 1906, he was already an established opera composer, largely due to his first opera Pagliacci, which had become an international success. An Impromptu is an informal piece usually for solo instrument. This French word can be translated loosely as “off-hand” and it’s used to describe relatively short pieces which sometimes have a partly improvised style, a simple structure and an emphasis on melody. Piano pieces entitled Impromptu first appeared in the early 19th century and remained popular for decades. This is a simplified edition of the piece edited by Colin Kirkpatrick. The work has been transposed down to D major from the original E major. The cello part remains unchanged and the bowing and phrasing are identical to the original edition. The music uses the entire cello range in both bass and tenor clefs and the highest note is the high D above the tenor staff (D5). This note appears only twice in the entire piece. The piano part has been simplified by reducing the number of notes in many of the chords, especially those played by the left hand. English • German.Hugo Becker was a notable cellist and teacher: born in Strasbourg on 13.2.1863, he died in Geiselgasteig near Munich on 30.7.1941. He started cello lessons with his father Jean Becker and was later taught by A. Piatti, J. de Swert and F. Grützmacher. Becker was initially employed as a cellist at the Mannheim National Theatre and then as principal cellist in the opera orchestra in Frankfurt am Main (1884–1886). From 1887–1906 he taught cello at the Hoch Conservatoire in Frankfurt, from 1909–1929 as a professor at the Academy of Music in Berlin. His book on the Mechanics and Aesthetics of Playing the Cello (Berlin 1929) deals with the physiological principles of cello playing and is still worth reading today. Schott published Becker’s Cello Concerto in A major op. 10 as well as some short character pieces. Andante religioso op. 2 is in three sections (A-B-A) with a lyrical A section and a faster rhythmic middle section. It was published by Schott in 1887 as plate number 24419.

When I removed the important lyrics from Feast of Love in order to make an accompanied instrumental solo I needed to convey the passionate drama just in the music. I changed a simple strophic form into an ABA Coda with every verse getting a different treatment. My harmony is much richer and more varied than the original. I added new articulations, dynamics, and other markings as well as a cadenza for one of the bridges. Excellent piece for a student to learn Romantic characteristics of expression, phrase shaping, and sempre rubato. This song is also excellent for Weddings. Alternative translations of the title are Celebration of Love and Love's Fire.
