Cello,Piano - Level 5 - SKU: A0.1245261 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Carlo Alfredo Piatti. Baroque,Chamber,Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred. Score and part. 36 pages. Artistic Score Engraving di Galvagno Michele #840152. Published by Artistic Score Engraving di Galvagno Michele (A0.1245261). Piatti composed the piano accompaniment for two out of the Six Suites for cello solo by J. S. Bach. After publishing Suite I (available here), here comes Suite IV!The style of this arrangement allows us to glimpse into how these masterpieces were perceived and performed in the mid-XIX century. The cello part, moreover, includes bowing and performance suggestions by Piatti himself. A rich Critical Notes section explains Piatti’s choices.Enjoy!Subscribe to my mailing list here: https://bit.ly/3ujFa4j to get the Prélude for free, weekly gifts, and exclusive discounts.  Full catalogue available here: https://adobe.ly/3A574Eg.

Published by Paladino Editions (A0.1281553). Popper’s Opus 69 is the longest of his suites for cello and piano. Cello,Piano - Level 3 - SKU: A0.549815 Composed by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Children,Christmas,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and part. 48 pages. Jmsgu3 #3545601. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549815). Duration: 6:12, Score: 29 pages, Solo part: 6 pages, Piano part: 12 pages. This is the grand finale of the Nutcracker Suite. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Tchaikovsky is probably the most popular of the great composers in America. His music certainly appeals to musicians. Likewise, it appeals even to folks who don’t normally listen to serious music. This is probably because of his most noteworthy melodies. Above all, he writes with great emotion. This certainly makes a most noteworthy if not an unforgettable impact. Education First of all, He attended classes at the Russian Musical Society. Even more, He also attended the St. Petersburg Conservatory. There he studied music theory with Nikolai Zaremba. He also consequently studied composition with Anton Rubenstein. It seems like Rubenstein came under criticism from a group of Russian composers known as the Five. The Five The Five certainly rejected Western musical influences. They rather sought to use elements from Russian music. They furthermore wanted to use more exotic musical materials. Western Techniques More than other Russian composers, Tchaikovsky studied modern Western music. He certainly develops his music like the European masters. So, rather than repeating a motive, he moves to a new key. He then introduces a different theme in the new key. Hence, he maintained his independence from the Five. Even more, he became the first Russian composer of international stature. Influences Tchaikovsky was probably influenced in his ballet scoring by Léo Delibes. Richard Wagner influenced his symphonic writing. Tchaikovsky’s most famous works include the 1812 Overture, The Nutcracker Suite, and Swan Lake. Also famous are the Violin Concerto in D and the six symphonies. The greatest of the six symphonies may be No. 6, the Pathétique. Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a The Nutcracker Suite is a ballet that was performed for the first time in December 1892 in St. Petersburg. To begin with, the original ballet failed to attract a positive reception. However, the ballet suite became probably one of the most popular of all of Tchaikovsky’s works. The ballet suite became even more famous in the 1960s. It is now performed all over the world, particularly during the Christmas season.

71a The Nutcracker Suite is a ballet performed for the first time in December 1892 in St. Petersburg. To begin with, the original ballet failed to attract a positive reception. However, the ballet suite became probably one of the most popular of all of Tchaikovsky’s works. The ballet suite became even more famous in the 1960s. It is now performed all over the world, particularly during the Christmas season.

Cello,Piano - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1281512 Composed by David Popper. 19th Century,Classical,Romantic Period. Score and part. 39 pages. Paladino Editions #872852. Published by Paladino Editions (A0.1281512). Looking at David Popper’s Walzer-Suite, Op. 60, from the perspective of its surrounding opus numbers, it dates most probably from the late 1880s. As with so many others of his pieces, this suite was mainly written for his own performances. At the time of its composition Popper was still married to Sophie Menter and at the peak of his solo career. Besides the obvious similarities to the works of the Strauß dynasty, the musical language of Richard Strauss can already be found in Popper’s Waltz Suite. Like Josef Merk’s Valses Brillantes, Op. 6, the work is a series of waltzes framed by an introduction and a virtuoso finale which are linked by a mutual theme. This newly typeset edition provides two cello parts: one with Popper's original markings, and one with performance suggestions by Martin Rummel.

In the Hall of the Mountain KingGrieg BackgroundIn the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions. Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia.LegacyGrieg is celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen.Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46)Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg indeed depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain.Holberg Suite and Misc. SummaryIt must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed by and large many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. In any event, Grieg himself performed and recorded the bulk of these pieces toward the end of his life.

Overture II. Nigun no. 9 III. Molad’ti IV. Gilu Hagalilim V. Y’mey Hanoar VI. The Gigue Is Up My apologies upfront for all the first person pronouns in this program note! A few years back, Nina Flyer asked me to write for her a piece of music that would contain or make reference to Jewish/Yiddish/Hebrew dance music and/or folk songs. The more I thought about it, the more difficult I realized the challenge would be. As best as I could tell, I had three options. Option one: I could set said dance music/songs for cello and piano, with the result being a series of arrangements: nice, but artlessly unoriginal (meaning dull). Option two: I could weave the tunes into a single narrative and in doing so write another version of Schlomo (a self-proclaimed Hebraic work for cello and orchestra by Ernst Bloch). Option three: I could make up my own ethnic-sounding melodies and either arrange them for cello and piano or weave them into some sort of Hebraic narrative: options one and two all over again. So I came up with option four. I selected four folk tunes (movements II, III, IV, and V) and composed a counter-melody to each. The first half of movements II, III, IV, and V set that counter-melody without any reference to the original folk tune. The second half of those movements then combines the counter-melody with the original tune (and thus the revelation, as the original tune is revealed). The generally two-part shape described above (excepting movement IV, which is A-B-A in structure) suggested Baroque binary dance form, and so I turned the piece into a sort of Baroque dance suite. It begins with a French Overture based on the counter-melodies of movement III and V, and concludes with a gigue based on the counter melodies of movements II and IV. The historical references are supposed to be tongue-in-cheek and I can only hope they will be taken that way. A thousand-and-one thanks to Nina Flyer and Lori Lack for their patience, hard work, and musical brilliance. Suite Revelation is dedicated – with the greatest respect and affection – to Nina Flyer.

Diego Marani #700445. Published by Diego Marani (A0.1096463). Suite bergamasque (L. 75) is a piano suite by Claude Debussy. He began composing it around 1890, at the age of 28, but significantly revised it just before its 1905 publication. The popularity of the 3rd movement, Clair de lune, has made it one of the composer's most famous works for piano, as well as one of the most famous piano compositions of all-time. This arrangement for cello with piano of the 1st movement, Prelude, is in the key of F major and marked moderato tempo rubato. Its legato phrases give it a smooth, flowing feel. It is suitable for classroom, repertoire, recital and also wedding.

Cello,Piano - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1281505 Composed by David Popper. Arranged by David Popper. 19th Century,Classical,Romantic Period. Score and part. 53 pages. Paladino Editions #872845. Published by Paladino Editions (A0.1281505). Op. 16bis is Popper’s own arrangement of his Suite for Two Violoncellos, Op. 16. It is infectious, vibrant and dazzling music well within the grasp of any advanced cello student, and a must for professionals. Performers can read from clean, newly typeset parts with either Popper’s own original bowings and fingerings or modern performance directions by Alexander Hülshoff. The suite comprises five movements that progress through popular dance types and character pieces. It incorporates for the first time, as Popper intended, his Tempo di Marcia as a simpler but still compelling alternative finale.
