David Popper (1843-1913) was a virtuoso cellist and he composed almost exclusively for the cello.  Polonaise de Concert, Op. 14 is one of his most popular and most played showpieces.  It’s a very effective piece which also works very well on the viola, with lots of energetic motives mixed with expressive melodic lines.  It also has ample opportunity to showcase the performer’s technical command, but nothing unsurmountable.  This transcription fully preserves the original flavour of the Polonaise but at the same time maintains the characteristic voice of the viola.  The viola part is fully annotated with bowings and fingerings which are practical and efficient, with consideration of keeping all the idiomatic features that are particular to the cello.

Both parts will stretch the player to the limits of their instrument’s range, and includes 2-on-3 rhythms and chromatic runs. For different instrumentation, this arrangement is compatible with products S0. 523329 (B flat), S0. 523325 (C), S0. 523323 (C bass clef), S0. 523321 (E flat), or S0. 523319 (F).This would be the perfect contest piece for advanced high schoolers, or an energetic offertory for a church service. This arrangement of the three-part compilation published in 1905 is based on Fritz Kreisler's original version as well as on later piano transcriptions by Sergei Rachmaninoff, with the harmonies, chromaticism and counterpoint of the piano transcriptions remaining unchanged. Original version and transcription are combined to form a virtuoso and effective solo piece. The three-four time typical of Vienna requires a certain, yet hardly notatable freedom of tempo without metronomic constraints.

The dialectics are in the juxtaposition of two homogenous movements of contrasting character. The third movement brings, like a development, the analysis of motifs and structures of the first two movements. 'The Sonata ends with the chorale Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir in whose adaptation inner conflict and contrast remain the formative means until the end.' (Pütz) A rewarding contemporary piece for competitions and concerts.
