A passacaglia is ... a musical form that is usually of a serious character and is often, but not always, based on a bass-ostinato and written in triple meter. from Wikipedia. THIS PASSACAGLIA is a slow theme and variations, in a minor mode, with a bass ostinato. THE ONLY difficult part is dealing with the counterpoint, but it is worth the effort, it will impress your audience, and is fun to play. I HAVE 3 versions; this one is for piano, viola and double bass. It also works well with cello instead of bass. I HAVE uploaded a PDF with the Viola, Double Bass, Cello and Piano parts. ALSO, I have uploaded a STRING ORCHESTRA version, with parts, and a MAMBO version for Tenor Sax, Trumpet, Trombone, Piano, String Bass and 4-part Latin percussion, with parts. You could make a whole concert out this one piece!

Published by David McKeown (A0.587371). Le Cygne, or The Swan, is the penultimate movement of Camille Saint-Saëns’1886 suite, Carnival of the Animals. Most often played as a solo piece for cello with piano, the original version was scored for solo instrument and two pianos. It was the only movement for the Carnival that the composer allowed to be heard in public during his lifetime. This version for Viola with Piano accompaniment has been arranged in alto clef to best suit the key and pitch of the solo instrument. The pdf file contains both the piano accompaniment and the separate solo part.Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. The melody is expressive and legato; the piano accompaniment is challenging in its constant semiquaver arpeggios. The overall performance time is around three minutes. The linked full-length youtube performance is the Clarinet version of this arrangement.Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to help with expressive playing. The legato in both parts demand precise fingers. Brandenburg 6 is a unique composition because of its original instrumentation (2 lead violas + string orchestra), and because of the nature of the first movement- that starts with a canon for the 2 violas playing the same line just one eighth note apart! Its fun to play, but hard to get the needed players to make it happen. So here is a reduction where the violist plays the first viola part, and a keyboard does the second viola part plus a reduced version of the backing strings. This piano reduction is meant to accompany a violist playing the original first viola part. If you want an excellent contemporary typesetting of the first viola part, you can get it at the Free Scores website- http://www.free-scores.com/download-sheet-music.php?pdf=43649 PLAY ALONG MP3’s There are mp3 files ‘in the cloud’ which you can download and use to practice with. They use the stereo capability to have the soloist on one channel, and the keyboard on the other. This way you can tune out your part if you want, or leave it in, at a volume of your choice. The tempo of the ‘playalong’ tracks can be adusted to your choice by using readily available playback software for instance, Roni music-https://www.ronimusic.com/, or even websites that do it for you online. Also, even very inexpensive mp3 players in the under $20 range nowadays provide playback with adjustable tempo. Downton Abbey was a much loved TV series that ran for six seasons capturing the hearts of many across the world. The composer of the music, John Lunn, won two Primetime Emmys for the hauntingly beautiful score. I have arranged this wonderful piece for violin and piano, as well as for cello and piano, and string quartet/string orchestra. The 30 sec clip is done on Sibelius software as I have not yet been able to record this piece live, but if you search my Youtube Channel, Skinny Black Dogs, Capriccio Quartet, you can see and hear the live version. The harmony and structure is exactly the same.
The piece is suitable for a young violist and could easily make use of open strings, though more experienced players will be able to play in different positions with longer bows and vibrato. At Bars 11-13 the soloist will need to change the bow discreetly when it runs out. At bar 16, and at other similar points, the last beat may be omitted as it is double by the pianist.This was great fun to arrange so I hope you enjoy playing it!
