The first verse introduces the melody in a simple and comforting manner. The accompaniment is flowing and reverent. The second verse becomes more joyous. In the third verse the piano starts with the melody and the viola plays an obligato. The third verse ends with the viola taking back the melody and finishing the piece as reverently as it began.

Published by Hyrum Kohler (A0.1228636). I wanted to play a hymn in church without simply playing the same thing three times in a row. And, without words, I wanted to express the tension and pain that occasionally and inevitably accompanies trying one's best to live a good life. This arrangement is simultaneously fresh, familiar, and reasonably challenging for the performer. This is my go-to for playing in a church setting, but it can also fit right in to a pedagogical or classical recital scenario. The traditional tune wears different clothes throughout the piece, having variance in time signature, key signature, and mode (dipping into minor). This is a simplification and compression of my original arrangment for string quartet. I originally intended this to be for viola, but it just so happened to fit in the violin's range; I left the part in treble clef to accommodate both options. The piano part is somewhat easier to play than the violin/viola part (evidenced by how I can kind of play it), but it still serves a collaborative or duet role, sharing and passing the melody betwen parts.

My arrangement takes it from a 60's pop song to a gentle jazz ballad. It is totally reharmonized and has a fresh new feel. The melody is the same, except it has a new Time Signature. The song was originally in 6/8 but I have set it in 1/2 in order to get the pulse and phrasing I want. (Yes, 1 minim/half note per bar.) The original accompaniment was broken arpeggios, but now it is all about the rich new blocked chords. With repeats and a D.S. I have covered all 4 verses and bridges. It was written thanks to a collaboration with costarican pianist Rebeca Ordóñez RodrÃguez and costarican violinist/violist Erasmo Solerti who were looking for a piece to premiere in a concert dedicated to the Central American bicentennial. Clouds played a vital role in the lives of our ancestors. Thanks to their observation skills, they were able to achieve a deep understanding of the nature surrounding them. As a kid, one of the games I used to play with my cousins and my mom was finding shapes in the clouds. We spent several hours laying on the ground just looking at clouds changing shapes. Each movement represents a mood involving clouds. The first movement is a dance in 5/8 time signature. It begins with a challenging key that will require a skillful violist. The movement explores the range of the Viola, including harmonics and other techniques. The second movement explores the alto range of the Viola while allowing the player to be very expressive, the combination with the piano creates a musical atmosphere representing a gray cloudy day. The third movement is a fast-paced dance that represents a day with different cloud scenes, for example, rain for one moment and sunny the next minute.

First of all, Scriabin composed mostly for the solo piano and also the orchestra. This is probably because he was a gifted pianist and therefore certainly appreciated the piano. Scriabin grew up in the late Romantic period, consequently, he was fond of the great piano masters of the time. As a result, he wrote his first noteworthy compositions in the manner of Chopin and Liszt. Forms Likewise, Scriabin used many of the same forms as Chopin. These certainly include the étude, prelude, nocturne, and even the mazurka. In contrast, as he developed his own sense of style his music became more and more unusual. So, the last five of his Piano Sonatas do not have a key signature and therefore lean towards atonality. Philosophy Scriabin also developed a keen interest in philosophy and likewise poetry. Furthermore, He designed his biggest work, the Mysterium, to last an entire week. Even more, Scriabin made plans not only for music, but also colored lights, incense, and dancing. He designed the performance to occur in the foothills of the Himalaya mountains. The Mysterium was never performed, and only sketches of the work remain. Modern Performances In modern times, we often experience performances of Scriabin’s most famous completed works accompanied by colored laser lights and incense. These are the Poem of Ecstasy (completed in 1908) and the Poem of Fire (completed in 1910). The lighting effects for these early performances were accomplished by the clavier à lumiéres. It was a keyboard instrument that projected colored light onto a screen.
