Not much is known about the origins of the Concertino, except that the three-movement work was most likely first written and performed by E-flat Cornet in the mid-19th Century by Sachse himself. Since that time, the work has been edited for Trombone and Bass Trombone. Along with the David Concertino, the two works are great examples of German Romantic solo writing for the brass family.Charles Vernon has arranged an excellent sounding edition for Tuba and Piano of about 12 minutes in length for advanced performers.

The work was influenced by a traditional dance used to worship the fire-god where the participants involved would jump or leap through fire. Candela, a gypsy girl performs this Ritual Fire Dance causing a ghost to appear. She begins to dance with the ghost whirling faster and faster until the ghost is pulled into the fire, causing it to disappear. This brilliant arrangement of about four and one half minutes is written for advanced performers.

He was also a very talented painter in the style of Goya. The Two Dances, 1. Oriental and 2. Fandango are taken from the 12 danzas españolas, volume I from 1890, for Piano.Mr. Sauer has brilliantly taken the solo Piano part and divided it between solo Tuba and Piano. Tubists will enjoy working on this style of Spanish Nationalist music of which there is none in the solo repertoire. The Two Dances are about 6 1/2 minutes in length and can be performed by advanced musicians.

The three movements total about four minutes in length and can be played by advanced performers.

Mendelssohn wrote eight volumes of songs for the Piano throughout his life. These pieces became popular immediately because of their beauty and accessibility. The Songs are mostly lyrical and of utmost beauty. Mr. Sauer has found a previously un-mined resource and added immeasurably to the Tuba and Bass Trombone repertoire. The work is playable by advanced performers. This arrangement is another example of Mr. Sauer’s excellent feel for the subtleties of the composer’s style.

The writing is very expressive and dark, possibly evoking the mood of Europe in the throes of great upheavals and the Great War. About 12 minutes in length, these four movements are appropriate for advanced performers.
