En Bateau (Sailing) is the first movement from Debussy's four movement Petite Suite written around 1886 for four-hand piano duet. Debussy was inspired to write this movement from the poem Fêtes galantes by Paul Verlaine. The Suite has been transcribed for every imaginable instrumentation and is one of the composer's most playable works from a technical standpoint. This lovely 3-minute arrangement for Tuba or Bass Trombone by Ralph Sauer is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792420). Fauré is well known for his lyricism and haunting harmonies. In a way, he was the father of French Impressionist music. The Sérénade, Opus 98 was originally written for the great 20th century Cellist, Pablo Casals. Mr. Ralph Sauer has kept the arrangement in the same key as the Cello. The work is playable by advanced performers. This arrangement is another example of Mr. Sauer’s excellent feel for the subtleties of the composer’s style.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792634). The Petite Suite, published in 1885, is Borodin's major work for the Piano and originally comprised of seven movements. Mr. Sauer's arrangement incorporates three of them: Intermezzo, Rêverie and Sérénade. The Petite Suite was dedicated to the Belgian Countess Louise de Mercy-Argenteau, who was a supporter of Borodin and his music. After Borodin's death in 1887, Glazunov orchestrated the Suite. The music has that Eastern flavor so indicative of Borodin's melodies, mysterious, lyrical and subtle. Advanced performers will enjoy this work which has been so beautifully arranged by Mr. Sauer.

However, knowing all its ins and outs are not necessary with Ralph Sauer's gorgeous arrangement of the suite of Waltzes for Tuba or Bass Trombone with Piano accompaniment. Written at the very end of the Romantic era in the early 20th century, the melodies are beautiful, the harmonies lush and the rhythms intoxicating.For advanced performers this 12 minute work will be a great addition to any recital.

He was also a very talented painter in the style of Goya. The Two Dances, 1. Oriental and 2. Fandango are taken from the 12 danzas españolas, volume I from 1890, for Piano.Mr. Sauer has brilliantly taken the solo Piano part and divided it between solo Tuba and Piano. Tubists will enjoy working on this style of Spanish Nationalist music of which there is none in the solo repertoire. The Two Dances are about 6 1/2 minutes in length and can be performed by advanced musicians.

One of the greatest works of the French impressionist era, Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune by Claude Debussy evokes mystery, stillness, lyricism, finesse, sensuality, nature, dreams, and desires. Taken from a poem by Stéphane Mallarmé, this work is considered by some to be a turning point of musical history as an awakening of modern music as it stretches the limits of tonality.
