Sonata for Tuba and Piano (2007) was commissioned by and is dedicated to tubist MarkNelson for premiere at the 2007 Southwest Tuba and Euphonium Conference. The work isin three movements, each using the same basic musical material. Throughout the work,there is an integration of the total chromatic spectrum (represented through row-likeconstructions) with triadic and tonal elements, particularly connected to the interval of aminor third.The first movement, Speaking of Sunsets, is bold and dramatic throughout. The musicalmaterial is subjected to a series of circular paths that loop back on themselves until themovement ends. (The title refers to American poet James Tate’s poem Never Again theSame and also Charles Wuorinen’s musical setting of that text.)The second movement, Build Me a Garden, takes its title from an original song I overheardwhile planning this work. It sung by a homeless man who was then sitting on the banks ofthe Charles River in Boston, Massachusetts. As the title implies, it is music that possesses a certain dark energy. It evokes not so much a night of tranquility, but rather one of great intensity. The titles of the movements are poetic, not programmatic-each intends to give a sense of the mood that pervades the music. The Bearer of Bad News begins obsessively with re-iterations of a unison pitch. The movement unfolds lyrically outwards from this texture, finally reaching a climax in an intense return of the re-iterations, before a coda brings the energy back down. A Desperate Peace draws from the spirit of fierce lament. It evokes a line from Tecumseh of the Shawnee American Indian tribe: When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home. In Towards Morning an obsessive rhythmic pulse pushes the music forwards towards the coming day. The night’s dark energy, however, is not soon forgotten. The set includes a piano score and parts for Bb clarinet and tuba.

I spent New Year's Eve 2018 in Nye, Montana, visiting family and friends. One of those friends is an imaging specialist who regaled us with an explanation of his most recent project, which he described as calibrating the moon. Specifically, he was talking about the NASA ARCSTONE mission to calibrate the moon's reflectance to use as an accurate reference, primarily in climate science. The idea is that we have all this data about global warming and atmospheric changes, and a lot of that data uses the brightness of the moon as a control variable, but we don't actually have a precise definition of how bright the moon is. Ever since I was a part of that conversation, I knew that I wanted calibrating the moon as a title, and everything that came after that plays with the idea of moon themes or of doing big impossible-sounding things. When Connor Challey approached me about writing for tuba, Calibrating the Moon was an obvious choice.The work opens with Syzygy, a term describing the straight line between the sun, moon, and Earth that occurs every new and full moon. The movement starts dark and brooding, moves to an energetic middle section, and returns to being mysterious, kind of like a lunar cycle. Fun fact: This movement's theme is actually a tuba setting of the phrase Calibrating the moon.The Second movement, Spectral Reflectance, is slow and shiny. NDSU was fortunate to have portfolio tubist (and Connor's mentor) Sam Pilafian as a visiting guest artist for several years, and I finished Syzygy around the time of his passing. I spent a lot of time thinking about Sam while putting the second movement together, and I quoted a couple of his favorite tuba concerti.The work ends with Libration. If you were to watch a time-lapse video of a lunar cycle, you'd notice that the moon not only transitions from new to full to new, but also sort of oscillates or wags. That's Libration. The composer was not only inspired by the beauty and grandeur of the parks, but also by the vision of a few people that turned into the reality, therefore the title of this composition. The first movement is called A Voice in the Wilderness and represents the voice of John Muir, who recognized the beauty of Yosemite and made an effort to preserve it for future generations. The lyrical sections reflect the beauty of the area and the chromaticism reflects the uncertainty of his efforts. Conflicts is the title of the second movement as it represents the opposing forces in the debate to create a national park system. Lively rhythm and counterpoint are used throughout the movement to express the opposing points of view and the heated arguments. The last movement, Manifestations is the realization of the dream of a national park system. The movement is lyrical and flowing and is designed to be both serene and awe-inspiring.
