Johannes Brahms' Hungarian Dance No. 2, expertly arranged by American composer P. F. Strohm for a trio consisting of two tenor trombones and piano. Brahms was enthralled with the rhythms and melodies of Hungarian music. He originally wrote his 21 Hungarian Dances for piano four-hands, and loved performing them for his friends. P. F. Strohm has placed the first six of these musical gems into a new setting of two trombones and piano, drawing from the original piano score; from the violin and piano arrangements made by Brahms' friend, Joseph Joachim; and from Brahms' own solo piano arrangements. These new arrangements are for skilled performers on all parts. Written for and dedicated to Mark Kellogg and Larry Zalkind at the Eastman School of Music, the dances are excellent for recitals and contests, and make wonderful encores. In the Hall of the Mountain King  Grieg Background In the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions.  Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia. Legacy Grieg is celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen. Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46) Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg indeed depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. The work is demanding in both technique and ensemble, but should be truly enjoyable to play and hear. The first movement, marked Moderato giocoso, is in sonata form in the key of G. The exposition is played muted, moving abruptly into a driving and open development, centered in D minor. The recap starts open, then re-employs the mute for a quiet close. The second movement is a beautiful, flowing song Lento con espressione, in D-flat major. It shifts to C# minor for a muted mid-section, then returns to the open horn in D-flat major to close. Â The third movement is marked Allegro gioioso. Â It is a driving 2/4, based around C Major, and briefly muted in the middle. Difficulty level for both instruments is medium-advanced. It was published just after its premiere in December of that year, and I am very glad that it has been played by a number of trombone quartets since then. Following its publication, a female trombonist uttered, “Although quartet is fun, it would be also enjoyable if it was played solo, wouldn’t it? “ and this brought the opportunity for this “solo trombone version” to be born.The whole work consists of three pieces. They were written based on my impression of each place when I visited them. 1. Kamakura: In the Hydrangea Temple I visited Meigetsu-in Temple, which is well-known as “Hydrangea Temple,” on a rainy day in June. There I saw colorful beautiful hydrangeas in full bloom, struck by gentle rain. The motif which is repeated many times in the piece represents each hydrangea. 2. Nara: Consecration of the Great Buddda Among the Great Buddhas all over, Rushana-butsu in Todai-ji Temple in Nara, which is 16 meters tall, is the most famous.I imagined the solemn scene of the Consecration Mass of Great Buddha. 3. Kyoto: The Golden Pavilion in the Sunset It was toward dusk when I visited the Rokuon-ji Temple, known as “Temple of Golden Pavilion,” which was built by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the third shogun in the Muromachi period. It shined like gold in the light reflected by the setting sun.It was fun for me to arrange the trombone quartet into solo trombone with piano, and I chose every single note carefully while building the relationship between the trombone and piano. I hope the audience will enjoy a different experience from the original quartet. I hope this work, born by Zipangu Quartet, will be loved by more people beyond the frame of its original setting. Because Sullivan was so talented, the Academy awarded him the Mendelssohn Scholarship for two years in a row. He, therefore, studied with John Goss, who studied with Thomas Atwood, who in turn studied with Mozart. Sullivan similarly studied the piano at the Academy with Arthur O’Leary. Study Abroad During his first year, he also earned money by singing solos in the Chapel Royal. At the end of his second year, the Academy consequently continued his scholarship and sent him to study at the Leipzig Conservatoire. He certainly studied composition, and likewise counterpoint and piano. Hence, during his final year in Leipzig, Sullivan finally completed his graduation composition project: Incidental Music for Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Association with Gilbert It seems like Sullivan built the bulk of his composing career largely in the 1860s. As a result, he became famous for his incidental music for the Tempest and his Irish Symphony. He, therefore, began collaborating with the poet W. S. Gilbert in the 1870s. Rather than focus on serious opera, Gilbert and Sullivan, in contrast, concentrated on comic opera such as H. M. S. Pinafore, the Pirates of Penzance, and the Mikado. Therefore, certainly as a result of his education and experience, Sullivan composed a total of 24 operas, 11 symphonic works, 10 choral pieces. Even more, he wrote a large number of noteworthy hymns such as Onward Christian Soldiers. Lost Chord The general style of his music is maybe similar to Mendelssohn, Schumann, and perhaps Liszt. It seems like Sullivan was fond of writing distinct melodies for each character in his operettas. His melodies combine together as the characters did. Furthermore, he was a master orchestrator, and therefore played the flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone fluently. The Lost Chord Sullivan wrote his most noteworthy song the Lost Chord in 1877. As a result, it was a great success and was certainly performed all over the world by a variety of singers such as Enrico Caruso. Because Sullivan was the most famous composer in England, the Lost Chord became the most famous of all British or American songs of the 1870s and 1890s. Consequently, in 1888 Thomas Edison recorded The Lost Chord for the phonograph. It was one of the first songs ever recorded. Furthermore, Queen Victoria knighted Sullivan in 1883. Â

There are five movements in this composition. 1. Strike while the iron is hot – This movement is in a fast tempo with a lot of syncopation and irregular meter change. The piano frequently plays two loud chords that indicate the striking. 2. Opposites attract – The opposites in this movement are a swing style and a classical style. Each has its moments to shine and yet one clearly influences the other. 3. Stop and Smell the roses – This movement is lyrical representing the beauty of smelling roses. A motif that contains rests is a reminder to stop and take time for the beautiful things in life. A contrapuntal middle section with steady sixteenth notes builds in intensity as another reminder that one needs to take time from the hectic pace of life to enjoy beauty. 4. Curiosity killed the cat – This movement is mostly soft, staccato, and furtive representing the curiosity of the cat. A loud chord or succession of chords indicates the cat getting into trouble. This happens a total of nine times representing the cat’s nine lives before the cat is finally doomed. 5. Look before you leap – As the adage implies, there are a lot of melodic leaps in this movement. Any scalar material or repeated note figures serve as a warning to look before one leaps.
