Strohm is in three movements and tonal throughout, using various modes to weave familiar yet unpredictable lines and harmonies.The first movement, in F, is a brisk and energetic sonata form, using various major and minor modes. The second movement is a Larghetto in simple ABA song form. The somber, reflective opening section is in f minor. The lush middle section builds through major keys, cascading back to the original f minor theme to close. The third movement opens with a solo statement that leads into a dance-like 6/8 rondo in F, alternating its energetic themes between minor and major. Dedicated to trombonist Eric Wallace, it's difficulty level is medium-advanced. Sonata No. 1 for Bass Trombone and Piano is perfect for bass trombone recital or contest. Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755280). Adages II is the second in a series of compositions based on familiar sayings. It is composed for Dr. Joseph Murrell and is for bass trombone and piano. There are five movements in this composition. 1. Strike while the iron is hot – This movement is in a fast tempo with a lot of syncopation and irregular meter change. The piano frequently plays two loud chords that indicate the striking. 2. Opposites attract – The opposites in this movement are a swing style and a classical style. Each has its moments to shine and yet one clearly influences the other. 3. Stop and Smell the roses – This movement is lyrical representing the beauty of smelling roses. A motif that contains rests is a reminder to stop and take time for the beautiful things in life. A contrapuntal middle section with steady sixteenth notes builds in intensity as another reminder that one needs to take time from the hectic pace of life to enjoy beauty. 4. Curiosity killed the cat – This movement is mostly soft, staccato, and furtive representing the curiosity of the cat. A loud chord or succession of chords indicates the cat getting into trouble. This happens a total of nine times representing the cat’s nine lives before the cat is finally doomed. 5. Look before you leap – As the adage implies, there are a lot of melodic leaps in this movement. Any scalar material or repeated note figures serve as a warning to look before one leaps.

Gustav Mahler wrote the song cycle Kindertotenlieder (Songs on the Death of Children) in 1904 for voice and orchestra. The lyrics are from a group of 428 poems by Friedrich Rückert. Mahler chose five of the poems to set to music. The music is very intimate, expressive and mournful. Erik Saras and Charles Vernon have beautifully transcribed and edited the complete work of 25 minutes length for Tenor or Bass Trombone and Piano accompaniment for moderately advanced level performers.

Da Dee gets its title onomatopoeically from the nursery rhyme-like quality of its opening measures. It is a playground taunt, a nursery rhyme - the Millennial Whoop in augmentation? The movement is in sonata form. II. Waiting for Sunrise emerged from a snippet of melody originally conceived for a solo bassoon piece. (It may show up in my Bassoon Sonata, in another form. I like to reuse and recycle). The way the movement unfolds was inspired perhaps by the grotto scene from Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe. III. Clown Car The movement opens with a Surprise! gesture - a sort of musical clowning around. The second theme is a mambo bass line accompanying a soaring and hopeful horn line. There is some blues too, before a contemplative coda brings all to a reassuring, if slightly melancholic, close.
