Published by Pete Strohm Music (A0.928160). Sonata No. 2 for Trombone and Piano was written for American trombonist Peter Ellefson. This second edition of the work contains four movements. The first movement, marked Andante con moto, starts in A-flat major with flowing themes, then a development in G# minor, and an ebullient recap. The second movement is marked Lento con affeto, in D-flat major, with a beautiful, plaintive trombone melody framed by a sparse but enveloping piano. The third movement is a spirited waltz in A-flat, weaving two lyrical themes among modes and keys. The final movement (Allegro) shifts to a bold F minor main theme that is developed throughout, leading to a joyous F major conclusion. This is an outstanding recital work for serious players. Individual movements are perfect for use in contests. Difficulty level is advanced. Total performance time is 21:50. Member, ASCAP.Â

The F-major Romance is a tender, adagio cantabile movement full of beauty, requiring grace, poise and elegance to perform properly. It has been said that it could have been titled Song Without Words the music being so lyrical of character. 'Romance' may have been written as a slow movement to a Violin Concerto that was never completed. This arrangement by Gordon Cherry is a wonderful addition to the Trombone repertoire.Almost 10 minutes in length, this work for advanced performers will be a great addition to any recital.

Below are the program notes for Illusion for Trumpet, Bass Trombone & Piano by Elizabeth Raum.Illusion, is a general commentary to the fact that life is mysterious and generally, uncertain, constantly shifting. We try to influence what happens but usually, outside forces determine the direction of our lives. Sometimes it’s hard to distinguish between illusion and reality, and, in fact, often people much prefer illusion to reality. Mv. 1 - Illusion starts out with an obscure time signature and is constantly shifting tonalities so for a while, you aren’t quite sure where you are. Life is full of such deceptions.Mv. 2 - Fill the Wine Cup is a series of drinking songs with a lot of gayety and rollocking humour as the party gets more raucous, but eventually things get a little blurry and bombastic and the party winds down. The trombone, due to its ability to imitate drunken reeling with glissandos, is often cast in this role. M. 3 - Destiny seems to march on and on, with mankind hoping to control their future, but the implication is that fate is more powerful than one can control.M. 4 - The ultimate illusion: a Political Debate. The trombone starts out as the first candidate, and the saxophone is the other. The music is circus-like as befits many heated debates.Illusion was commissioned by Lucas Kaspar and JD Little. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792523). Villa-Lobos' Pequena Suite is an early work written in 1913 originally composed for Cello and has been arranged for Trombone and Piano by Ralph Sauer. The Suite of six movements are titled: 1. Romancette 2. Legendária 3. Harmonias soltas 4. Fugato (all’antica) 5. Melodia 6. Gavotte-Scherzo The movements alternate slow-fast-slow-fast, etc., the slow movements are serious and contemplative and the fast ones are playful and bouncy. The complete work is about 13 minutes in length and suitable for advanced performers.
