The composition is easy to read, fun to play and sound professional when performed. Arranged by Fishel Pustilnik, very well known as Composer/Publisher. His books Jazz & Pop Piano Paradise (Volumes 1-5) have become a commercial success and a hit with music teachers and students in Canada. (Thousands books already sold in Canada). They are also starting to enter the US, Brazil, Norway, Russia, Holland, Israel, Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Greece, Latvia and UK markets. This is a wonderful new publication. BartoÌk's Allegro Barbaro, composed in 1911 is one of his most famous solo piano works, written in his typical style using folk elements based on Hungarian Pentatonic and Romanian chromatic scales. The music has even been used on a composition by the Progressive rock group Emerson, Lake and Palmer from their 1970 debut album. Ralph Sauer's brilliant arrangement for Trombone and Piano is reminiscent of the famous Trombone passage from the Miraculous Mandarin ballet suite. This 3 minute work is suitable for advanced performers. The sound clip is performed by Mr. Sauer with Mac Booke on piano.

The work of about 5 minutes in length is dedicated to Professor John Marcellus of the Eastman School of Music and was premiered at the school in 2010 during a visit by the composer. Hot Pursuit is composed in an A-B-A format with a lyrical middle section flanked by a fast section marked with giant leaps, supersonic scales and sharp attacks. This work can add a big boost to your next recital.

Published by Joseph Hollings Publishing (A0.927663). Awaken the dawn was written for and dedicated to Shachar Israel, Assistant Principal Trombone of the Cleveland Orchestra. Mr. Israel commissioned the work and worked closely with the composer during the composition process. The piece is demanding for both trombonist and pianist.Naming the piece was relatively straightforward, as the composer intended from the outset to use the English translation of the Hebrew word and Mr. Israel's first name 'Shachar' (in Hebrew, 'shachar' means 'dawn'). The title, taken from a passage in the Book of Psalms, is intended to represent the energy and beauty present in the few moments before dawn breaks.The piece begins with a lyrical trombone line, floating over a minimalistic piano accompaniment. Making the most of the trombone's pitch and dynamic range, the trombone becomes increasingly agitated and the piano accompaniment more fragmented. A frenetic passage leads into a fast, aggressive section before returning to the opening melodies.Mr. Israel recorded the piece in 2018 at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio with the marvelous Martha Locker on piano. The recording was produced by the Grammy award-winning Elaine Martone. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792540). Debussy's General Lavine - eccentric, is taken from his Book II of Piano Preludes written in 1912. It is in the style of a Cakewalk, a dance developed in the late 19th century at get-togethers on slave plantations in the southern United States. The music is based on Edward Lavine, a famous vaudeville performer whose act was presented at the Marigny Theatre around the same time. It is the only work by Debussy composed as a musical portrait. The music of about 3 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.

The beautiful melody works very well for solo instrument with piano and requires good breath control. The rhythms are particularly tricky in this piece, regularly moving from triplets to duplets and back again. Entia Imaginaria, from the Latin imaginary beings is a subject that fascinates me, especially after reading Jorge Luis Borges's Book of Imaginary Beings. This three movements composition include: 1. Phoenix - bird that dies by fire and then is reborn from its ashes; 2. Sirena (Mermaid) - Creature part woman, part fish, whose beauty and singing lured sailors against the rocks in the sea; 3. Hippogryphus (Hippogriff) - Winged creature with the head of griffin and horse body. It symbolizes an impossible union. This work was requested by Nuno Henriques (Bass Trombone), who I dedicate and was composed between December 2011 and February 2012. Versions for Trombone Tenor & Strings, Bass Trombone & Piano and Tuba & Piano also available.
