Published by Pete Strohm Music (A0.928160). Sonata No. 2 for Trombone and Piano was written for American trombonist Peter Ellefson. This second edition of the work contains four movements. The first movement, marked Andante con moto, starts in A-flat major with flowing themes, then a development in G# minor, and an ebullient recap. The second movement is marked Lento con affeto, in D-flat major, with a beautiful, plaintive trombone melody framed by a sparse but enveloping piano. The third movement is a spirited waltz in A-flat, weaving two lyrical themes among modes and keys. The final movement (Allegro) shifts to a bold F minor main theme that is developed throughout, leading to a joyous F major conclusion. This is an outstanding recital work for serious players. Individual movements are perfect for use in contests. Difficulty level is advanced. Total performance time is 21:50. Member, ASCAP.Â

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811191). Cherry Classics is pleased to introduce Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra 2020 (Piano reduction) by San Francisco based composer/conductor Mark Narins. The concerto is in 4 movements: I. Prayer, II. Meditation, III. Call and Response, IV. Exaltation Here is a description of the work by Mark Narins, the composer: Prayer: The first movement starts with a shimmering tremolo in the strings over which the silver voice of the trombone plays an arching phrase that lingers on an extended appoggiatura. The trombone is a lone mystic reaching for the sky and then falling perilously down to the pedal register. Later the orchestra breaks into a frenetic vamp over which the trombone plays intense ascending scales and passage work. The movement ends with an ascent to a high C#, moving to a final ringing high C. Meditation: After the harp lays out a series of arpeggiated chords, the trombone plays a warm, rich theme in the middle range. The following episodes are variations on this theme. The trombone moves into the upper register, floating with the ease of a lead trombone in a big band. The movement ends with an ascending yearning phrase reaching a high D as the soloist touches the sky and then comes gently back to earth. Call and Response: The orchestral accompaniment starts in an anxious, mysterious tonality. The trombone enters with a burst of energy playing a machine gun series of Fs. The movement develops into a series of short brilliant solo passages answered boldly by the orchestra. This movement showcases the stunning declamatory powers of the trombone. Exaltation: Movement 4 starts as an allegro with intense tremolos in the basses. The trombone breaks out into an articulated driving theme followed by several extended melodic passages. Midway in the movement the strings abruptly lay out a syncopated Latin dance rhythm over which the trombone climbs from the bottom to the top of its range in rapid triplets. In the final codetta the trombone accelerates the dance tempo and climaxes on a series of high C#s in a brilliant and joyous fashion. The concerto is 27 minutes in duration and is appropriate for advanced performers. This version with Piano is a reduction of the full Orchestral version (to be published in the near future). The new Trombone Concerto by Mark Narins is a very exciting piece with dramatic contrasts between the slow and fast sections. The move to the finish of the piece makes for a great wrap-up. INTRODUCTION Breeze in The Hearts, Bloom in The World is a sonata for trombone and piano commissioned by trombonist Takenori Yoshikawa that premiered at Mr. Yoshikawa's recital in July 2010 with Iku Miwa on piano. Mr. Yoshikawa had requested me to compose a bold and spirited piece, which prompted me to write this sonata with four movements after much deliberation.In the original edition, the burden of the performance was a little too focused on the trombone due to the trombonist's heightened interest in the piece, and as a result, the piece became difficult to play. In this revised edition, I have reworked the balance between the trombone and the piano while preserving the length of the piece so that the music can be performed more effectively.<Performance notes>I. The repetitions of the gentle melody in the introduction should be played in a way that allows it to be heard from far away, while the theme that appears after that should sound majestic and brave.II. Nostalgia - Although this movement is in a minor key, the music seeks to depict a sense of nostalgia instead of sorrow. Despite its slow, triple-time rhythm, please ensure that the music progresses quietly without coming to a halt.III. Serenade - In this movement, the trombone's melody should have a smooth and lively rhythm like the cello in a string ensemble. Articulate the melody beautifully with grace and movement and never allow it to become too heavy.IV. The theme in this movement has a similar feel to that in the first movement, but lighter. Maintain a tempo that is not too fast and keep the music moving. In the coda section from F, the opening section of the first theme makes an appearance from time to time as the piece heads toward the end. Please maintain a constant tempo while articulating the notes in a loud and resonant manner.The piano part contains many sections throughout the entire piece that call for a deep, orchestral sound. The pianist should read these parts carefully from the score while supporting the trombone as much as possible.The word fuka in the Japanese title Fuka Sanrei refer to the flowers that bloom when the wind blows between two people and brings about various encounters between them. David Fetter's brilliant new work Situation Update - Suite for Tenor Trombone and Piano is written in three contrasting movements totalling almost 11 minutes in length: 1. Swift 2. Longing 3. Exit Music Swift is marked Intense and is very rhythmic and angular. Longing is a beautiful lyrical movement marked Cantabile and Exit Music is marked Lively mixing chromatic, lyrical and syncopated segments, ending in a giant climax. Both the solo and accompaniment parts are written for advanced performers. The work's premier was performed in 2015 by retired Principal Trombonist of the Boston Symphony, Ronald Barron and accompanied at the Piano by composer Eric Ewazen. Here is what Mr. Ewazen has said about Situation Update: I had the pleasure of hearing Ron Barron play David Fetter's exciting and virtuosic new work for Trombone and Piano, Situation Update. David's music allows the Trombonist to sing and soar in 3 contrasting movements filled with vivid colors, beautiful and expressive harmonies, and a wonderful flowing rhythmic energy. The outer movements crackle with energy, showcasing the amazing technique of soloist Ron Barron, as the melodic line shifts and changes with playful abandon, while the middle movement is heartfelt and lyrical, with beautiful melodic lines, supported by resonant, gorgeous harmonies. The work is a real tour de force and rightly deserves to take its place as a significant addition to the Trombone repertoire.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792301). Terry Mizesko has performed as the Bass Trombonist for the North Carolina Symphony since 1971. As well he is a noted composer and has had his works performed by a number of orchestras and well known musicians. The Concertpiece for Tenor Trombone and Piano composed in 2009 is an extensive work in a traditional yet contemporary Sonata style in four movements. The Concertpiece ends with an eloquent Epilog which sums up the entire work. Movement I is titled Intrada and is mostly in an Allegro Tempo.<BR> Movement II is titled Romanza marked Moderato e rubato Movement III is titled Danza Rustica and moves with quick rhythmic energy. Movement IV is titled Epilog, slow and evocative in nature. Concertpiece is about 27 minutes in length and can be performed by advanced musicians.

The composition is in three movements: I Cherub vs Imp II Guardian III Old Nick This new work was commissioned by his former student, Gordon Wolfe, Principal Trombonist of the Toronto Symphony. The Concertino is one of the featured works on Wolfe's beautiful new recording, REFLECTIONS. Here is what the composer says about his own work: The 'tritone' has been referred to as a dissonance for centuries, and has been called 'the devil in music'. This interval can be quite difficult to sing in tune, and can often grate on the ears, yet it can also have a great dramatic effect. It is tuly a 'devilish' little beast, and it is what inspired me. The devil's antagonist is surely an angel. So, imagine one's guardian angel on one shoulder, and 'Old Nick' on the other, battling for your conscience, and you will essentially have what this three movement piece is all about. Concertino is for very advanced performers and is about 15 minutes in length.

Reinhold Gliere's Concerto for Coloratura Soprano and Orchestra, Op. 82 was written in 1942-1943 and shows off the composer's gentle melodic musical style reminiscent of Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and even Wagner. The choice of a vocal soloist singing without words was not new at that time, as Rachmaninov's beautiful Vocalise had already been composed. This fine work has sat dormant for many years and has now come to light thanks to the efforts of Charlie Vernon, Bass Trombonist of the Chicago Symphony, who performed this virtuoso work as a young performer. The concerto is in the standard three movement form: Fast, slow, fast. This publication is a reduction from the original orchestral version (to be released at some point in the future). Here is a description of the Concerto by the composer, John W. Ware. I started on the trombone concerto in my junior year studying composition at Indiana University. While working on it, I learned of an opportunity to make it sort of a thesis piece (though students didn't write a thesis in composition while an undergrad). The original version was for trombone with string orchestra, and it was performed by the IU String Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Arthur Corra, with Robert Priez, trombone, as part of my senior composition recital. I thought the performance was quite good (Priez played extraordinarily well), and the piece received a newspaper review in the Indiana Daily Student, in which the reviewer wrote that the work was almost too exciting. I thought at the time that he had given me and my music a fine compliment. I made a piano version of the accompaniment, shortening and tightening the first movement, for performances in 1966; I made a second revision in 1967 for a performance by E. J. Eaton, trombonist at the University of Tennessee at Martin, arriving at the form in which the work exists now. The first movement is in fairly normal sonata-allegro form, in the key of A minor. It alternates between assertive and more thoughtful moods. There is no introduction; the soloist enters immediately and dominates much of the movement. The main theme is--by some manipulation--a source for most of the other themes, and all of the themes are used in close proximity to each other, including contrapuntal combinations, especially near the end. Originally the movement included a lengthy fugato, now much shortened and including a stretto that builds and subsides before a cadenza leading to a coda based on both the principal and secondary themes. Key relations in this movement, as in the other two, are quite free and often chromatic, with frequent third-relations; but returns to the tonic at the end are emphatic. The writing is challenging for both soloist and accompanist; the piece is substantial, requiring technique and stamina. The second movement is in F minor and is also built on both contrast and close relationships between the main and secondary themes. The main theme is heard in the piano part before the soloist enters. The mood is more lyric than in the first movement, but with dramatic episodes also. In this movement are some definite derivations from themes in the first movement. The ending is a sort of lengthened shadow of the opening. The finale returns to A minor, with themes slightly related to polonaise rhythms, but with strong echoes of first-movement themes. Here, too, dramatic and lyric episodes alternate, with dotted rhythms frequently propelling the music forward. The introduction is a brief and simple preparation for the solo entry. Later in the movement, a very brief, slightly slower section is soon overtaken by the original tempo. Toward the end, there is a second cadenza, again leading to a swift and energetic coda. The work is about 20 minutes in length and is appropriate for advanced performers.

As with any long-term struggle, some days are easier than others, and some days it is hard to do much of anything at all. Walking through hard days, this piece is about mental health, the struggles that you face, and on the most difficult days, what it takes to rise again. Despair: This movement opens with what I call the despair motif. This motif consists of seven notes and will return throughout the piece, reminding us of uncertainty and darkness. The middle of the movement includes a build-up leading to a complete panic attack, featuring cluster chords in the piano and extreme volumes and articulation in the trombone. Finally, a quasi-march leads us to the end, where we sink to the lowest and angriest point. Support: This tranquil and shimmering movement evokes the other side of grief and depression: the people around you. In the dark moments, these people can become pillars of aid and light. Even with support, there are moments of darkness and uncertainty, but support will always be there. Musically, this movement features numerous color tones and aims to create an emotionally understanding and steady atmosphere. The opening trombone line (the support motif) represents tender support and is used numerous times in the next movement. Overcome: The final movement opens with a haunting atmosphere created by plucked piano strings. The first normal piano entrance is the Rumbling motif: the feeling of the soul exerting its will to be free but not quite making it. Throughout the rest of the movement, the trombone and piano go back and forth, with the piano emphasizing support and the trombone wallowing in despair. Eventually, the trombone begins to come around and rise. Concluding with a triumphant feeling of release, the mind is lifted from despair, free and open to whatever life brings next. Mental health looks different for everyone, and I want to reflect that in this composition. For all future performances, the performers can make significant musical changes to better reflect their own challenges. This could be as small as a different tempo or as large as a completely different style and articulation. Cherry Classics Music is proud to be bringing this very fine work back to life. The style of this 3 movement work is similar to the well known Sonatina for Trombone and Piano by Serocki. Miroslav Krejci was born on the 4th of November, 1891 in Rychnov nad Kn??nou (a small town situated in the eastern part of Bohemia of the Czech Republic). There, he also attended high school. After graduation he travelled to Prague, studying natural science, geography and musicology at Charles University. At the Conservatory he studied composition under Vitezslav Novak. Krejci also became a teacher at a few grammar schools in the Czech republic. He died on the 29th of December 1964 in Prague. Miroslav Krejci created music for many various ensembles and his compositions are among the most prolific of Czech composers. For example, he composed the following: two Operas: The Summer and The Last Hetman, two Symphonies, string quartets, sonatas for violins, trios for wind instruments, sonatinas for brasswind instruments and piano and five piano cycles. He wrote many vocal compositions, especially for chorus. Krejci also created many arrangements of folk songs for chorus and for solo voice with piano accompaniment. The Sonatina for Trombone and Piano was composed in 1948. It was first performed on the occasion of the composer's birthday.

The Chants du Rhin (Songs of the Rhine), a cycle of six pieces, based on poems by Joseph Méry, were written in 1865, and Bizet performed two of them on 16 April 1866 at a soirée of the Beaujolais Philharmonic Society. The songs are grouped symmetrically around La bohémienne as the central piece, framed by two meditatively yearning pieces (in E and D flat major) and two vividly exuberant ones (similarly in E and D flat major), with L’aurore serving as an introduction. In this cycle Bizet takes up the theme of the gypsy girl which had already entered European music in the operas The Bohemian Girl by the Irish composer Michael William Balfe and Verdi’s Il trovatore, as well as in Franz Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsodies for piano. Bizet will return to it one year later in La jolie fille de Perth and ten years later in Carmen. The fourth piece Les confidences shows similarities in tonality, structure and motifs to the middle part of the third movement of Chopin’s Sonata in B minor.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792416). Paul Marie Théodore Vincent d'Indy was born in Paris into an aristocratic family of royalist and Catholic persuasion. He had piano lessons from an early age from his paternal grandmother, who passed him on to Antoine François Marmontel and Louis Diémer. His main influence was Cesar Franck. These three pieces were some of his many works for Piano. Opus 33 was inspired by a trip to Bayreuth, the musical home of Wagner and the Black Forest region. Opus 33 no. 1 from 1889 is titled ? with no explanation of itself. Opus 33 no. 10 is titled Lermoos, which is a delightful skiing village in Austria right on the border with Germany. Germany's largest mountain is in perfect view, possibly giving the movement its spirit. Opus 28 is a Serenade for Violin and Piano published in 1900. It is lithe, subtle and lyrical.
