Published by Joseph Hollings Publishing (A0.927663). Awaken the dawn was written for and dedicated to Shachar Israel, Assistant Principal Trombone of the Cleveland Orchestra. Mr. Israel commissioned the work and worked closely with the composer during the composition process. The piece is demanding for both trombonist and pianist.Naming the piece was relatively straightforward, as the composer intended from the outset to use the English translation of the Hebrew word and Mr. Israel's first name 'Shachar' (in Hebrew, 'shachar' means 'dawn'). The title, taken from a passage in the Book of Psalms, is intended to represent the energy and beauty present in the few moments before dawn breaks.The piece begins with a lyrical trombone line, floating over a minimalistic piano accompaniment. Making the most of the trombone's pitch and dynamic range, the trombone becomes increasingly agitated and the piano accompaniment more fragmented. A frenetic passage leads into a fast, aggressive section before returning to the opening melodies.Mr. Israel recorded the piece in 2018 at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio with the marvelous Martha Locker on piano. The recording was produced by the Grammy award-winning Elaine Martone. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792309). Le Rossignol or the Nightingale is originally a vocalise for Soprano solo from Saint-Saën's incidental music for the play, Parysatis written in 1902. This 4-5 minute work is all about mood. Mr. Sauer uses the original key of B-flat, which lays perfectly for all of the bird-like calls that are in phrases which are slurred. The music has a lot of ad lib. tempo sections which gives the performer plenty of time to create that magic call of the Nightingale. Early writers thought it was the female that sang, but in fact it is the male. The Nightingale usually sings at night or just before dawn when other birds are silent and has a strong spontaneous song with an impressive range of trills and whistles.

His life was a constant struggle with adversity, and Joplin died relatively young in 1917, at the dawn of the recording age. Few remembered Joplin’s music until a revival in the 1970s brought The Entertainer and others to the world’s attention. Nowadays Scott Joplin has taken his rightful place in the gallery of great American composers. The Rags included in this collection are, The Entertainer, The Maple Leaf Rag, The Easy Winners, The Elite Syncopations and The Favorite. They have been arranged as solos for one Trombone with piano accompaniment, and include all sections of the original compositions. You will download one pdf file that contains both 22 pages of piano score and the 10 page solo part. These pieces are suitable for players at an intermediate and advanced intermediate level. Musicians will find these Ragtime solos ideal for formal and informal performances, light and fun, yet still a serious and vitally important part of the American musical heritage. The overall performance time for all five is around 25 minutes. All three were composed between 1870 and 1877, then collected and published in 1878 under the title Trois Mélodies. Not originally conceived as a song cycle, these three songs acquired this opus number much later, in the 1890s. The poem for Après un rêve was loosely adapted from an anonymous Italian text by Romain Bussine. It describes, in the form of a dream, the imaginary flight of two lovers who are head over heels in love, although the last verse brings the dreamer inexorably back to harsh reality as dawn is breaking. In this version, the composition was arranged for Trombone and Piano by Harry Walker.
