Armand Russell's Perplexing and Perilous Pieces for Trombone and Piano is in two contrasting movements. The first movement Perplexing Prelude is slow, sad, gloomy, worried and moody. The second movement Perilous Pursuit is fast with many different 4-note Bartokian modal-like scales and quite playful in mood. It gets going faster and faster, finally slowing right down and becoming quiet at the end like an exhausted child, but giving one surprise last gasp of a Hoorah to conclude. This work of a bit over 5 minutes in length is appropriate for intermediate performers and is all in bass clef.

INTRODUCTION Breeze in The Hearts, Bloom in The World is a sonata for trombone and piano commissioned by trombonist Takenori Yoshikawa that premiered at Mr. Yoshikawa's recital in July 2010 with Iku Miwa on piano. Mr. Yoshikawa had requested me to compose a bold and spirited piece, which prompted me to write this sonata with four movements after much deliberation.In the original edition, the burden of the performance was a little too focused on the trombone due to the trombonist's heightened interest in the piece, and as a result, the piece became difficult to play. In this revised edition, I have reworked the balance between the trombone and the piano while preserving the length of the piece so that the music can be performed more effectively.<Performance notes>I. The repetitions of the gentle melody in the introduction should be played in a way that allows it to be heard from far away, while the theme that appears after that should sound majestic and brave.II. Nostalgia - Although this movement is in a minor key, the music seeks to depict a sense of nostalgia instead of sorrow. Despite its slow, triple-time rhythm, please ensure that the music progresses quietly without coming to a halt.III. Serenade - In this movement, the trombone's melody should have a smooth and lively rhythm like the cello in a string ensemble. Articulate the melody beautifully with grace and movement and never allow it to become too heavy.IV. The theme in this movement has a similar feel to that in the first movement, but lighter. Maintain a tempo that is not too fast and keep the music moving. In the coda section from F, the opening section of the first theme makes an appearance from time to time as the piece heads toward the end. Please maintain a constant tempo while articulating the notes in a loud and resonant manner.The piano part contains many sections throughout the entire piece that call for a deep, orchestral sound. The pianist should read these parts carefully from the score while supporting the trombone as much as possible.The word fuka in the Japanese title Fuka Sanrei refer to the flowers that bloom when the wind blows between two people and brings about various encounters between them. This piece was composed for Will Hutchinson, an up-and-coming young trombonist from Christchurch, New Zealand. It is in three movements, the first is chorale-like and calls for a rich tone together with excellent lyrical interpretation - a fine opportunity to bring the romantic element to the fore. The second movement is a waltz and great fun for the player(s) and the audience. The third movement gives the soloist the opportunity to show his or her musicianship and is much loved by audiences. For the soloist and pianist this is not a technically difficult piece to play - but it provides an excellent opportunity to interpret the music and draw the audience in.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.745511). The Rückert Lieder by Gustav Mahler were written between 1901 and 1902, being first premiered in 1905 with Mahler himself conducting. The text of the songs is taken from poems set by Friedrich Rückert, a professor of Oriental languages. Mahler's music, able to convey complex emotions with seemingly simple melodic lines is the perfect vehicle for these poems. Ralph Sauer has taken four of these songs and edited them for performance on the Tenor or Bass Trombone. He has also included the original German and English translations of the songs to aid the performers and also the listener to best enjoy the feelings coming from this sublime music. All together the songs are about 15 minutes in length. Although technically not difficult, these songs require a mature interpretation in order to best convey their message.

The opera Prince Igor is possibly his greatest and boldest work with many beautiful melodies coming forth, especially the Chorus and Dance of the Polovetsain Maidens. The music has an mysterious Eastern sound which is very captivating. There is nothing like this written for the Trombone and Mr. Sauer’s arrangement is wonderful.This work is about 7 minutes in length for advanced performers.
