Program this for church services during the Easter season, weddings, or as a recital encore.Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) also known as: Sleepers Awake Bach composed his church cantata Wachet auf (BWV 140) as part of his second annual cantata cycle covering the entire annual church calendar. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the chorale prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – in a manner similar to the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the watchmen singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears it catches the listener at times totally off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645). This transcription became No. 1 of the Six Schübler Chorales. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with the instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio. History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer. Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. He changed the original orchestral instrumentation to soprano, strings, and continuo.  He also modified the voice-leading making it sound more like a Bach composition. The work appears as BWV 508 No. 25 in the Anna Magdalena Notebook No. 2.  Source Only a few remnants of the original opera have survived. Historians speculate that Anna Magdalena got the song from the Leipzig Opera after the bankruptcy of 1720. O Salutaris (O, Saving Victim) composed in 1884 is the eighth movement of a series of Twenty Motets written for various vocal combinations from solo to eight-part choir, all with organ accompaniment. These were most likely written while the composer performed as a church organist. Jean-Louis Couturier has transcribed the original (tenor and baritone voice) for Trombone Duo and organ and would be excellent for an Easter service or a serious occasion. This work is appropriate for intermediate level performers.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811191). Cherry Classics is pleased to introduce Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra 2020 (Piano reduction) by San Francisco based composer/conductor Mark Narins. The concerto is in 4 movements: I. Prayer, II. Meditation, III. Call and Response, IV. Exaltation Here is a description of the work by Mark Narins, the composer: Prayer: The first movement starts with a shimmering tremolo in the strings over which the silver voice of the trombone plays an arching phrase that lingers on an extended appoggiatura. The trombone is a lone mystic reaching for the sky and then falling perilously down to the pedal register. Later the orchestra breaks into a frenetic vamp over which the trombone plays intense ascending scales and passage work. The movement ends with an ascent to a high C#, moving to a final ringing high C. Meditation: After the harp lays out a series of arpeggiated chords, the trombone plays a warm, rich theme in the middle range. The following episodes are variations on this theme. The trombone moves into the upper register, floating with the ease of a lead trombone in a big band. The movement ends with an ascending yearning phrase reaching a high D as the soloist touches the sky and then comes gently back to earth. Call and Response: The orchestral accompaniment starts in an anxious, mysterious tonality. The trombone enters with a burst of energy playing a machine gun series of Fs. The movement develops into a series of short brilliant solo passages answered boldly by the orchestra. This movement showcases the stunning declamatory powers of the trombone. Exaltation: Movement 4 starts as an allegro with intense tremolos in the basses. The trombone breaks out into an articulated driving theme followed by several extended melodic passages. Midway in the movement the strings abruptly lay out a syncopated Latin dance rhythm over which the trombone climbs from the bottom to the top of its range in rapid triplets. In the final codetta the trombone accelerates the dance tempo and climaxes on a series of high C#s in a brilliant and joyous fashion. The concerto is 27 minutes in duration and is appropriate for advanced performers. This version with Piano is a reduction of the full Orchestral version (to be published in the near future). The new Trombone Concerto by Mark Narins is a very exciting piece with dramatic contrasts between the slow and fast sections. The move to the finish of the piece makes for a great wrap-up. Published by Graham Boag (A0.1131518). Reynaldo Hahn (1874 – 1947) was a Venezuelan-born French composer, conductor, music critic, and singer. He is best known for his songs – mélodies – of which he wrote more than 100, mostly composed in a thirty-year period from 1888 to the end of the First World War. Following the War demand for songs with piano accompaniment diminished and he turned to other forms, composing five operas with another unfinished.     We have three examples of Hahn’s melodies spanning his career, ‘Si me vers avaient des alles’ composed in 1888 aged just14. ‘A Chloris’ (1913) and ‘Je me souviens’ (1947) which was part of his final set of ‘9 Mélodies retrouvées’. These are all lyrical and highlight Hahn' musical voice. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792223). The Sonatina for Trombone & Piano was originally published after its composition, but soon became lost. It has recently been brought back into the repertoire. Cherry Classics Music is proud to be bringing this very fine work back to life. The style of this 3 movement work is similar to the well known Sonatina for Trombone and Piano by Serocki. Miroslav Krejci was born on the 4th of November, 1891 in Rychnov nad Kn??nou (a small town situated in the eastern part of Bohemia of the Czech Republic). There, he also attended high school. After graduation he travelled to Prague, studying natural science, geography and musicology at Charles University. At the Conservatory he studied composition under Vitezslav Novak. Krejci also became a teacher at a few grammar schools in the Czech republic. He died on the 29th of December 1964 in Prague. Miroslav Krejci created music for many various ensembles and his compositions are among the most prolific of Czech composers. For example, he composed the following: two Operas: The Summer and The Last Hetman, two Symphonies, string quartets, sonatas for violins, trios for wind instruments, sonatinas for brasswind instruments and piano and five piano cycles. He wrote many vocal compositions, especially for chorus. Krejci also created many arrangements of folk songs for chorus and for solo voice with piano accompaniment. The Sonatina for Trombone and Piano was composed in 1948. It was first performed on the occasion of the composer's birthday.
