The Serenade, Op. 37 was conceived for Cello with Piano accompaniment, but later in life the composer scored the work for the solo instrument with orchestra. The Trombone world knows Rimsky-Korsakov for his Concerto with Band. The Serenade has a very similar mood to the slow movement of the Concerto. It's beautiful lilting rhythm combined with a wonderful melody makes this work very worthwhile. Mr. Sauer does a beautiful job eding the 4 1/2 minute work for advanced performers.

Not much is known about the origins of the Concertino, except that the three-movement work was most likely first written and performed by E-flat Cornet in the mid-19th Century by Sachse himself. Since that time, the work has been edited for Trombone and Bass Trombone. Along with the David Concertino, the two works are great examples of German Romantic solo writing for the brass family. Charles Vernon has arranged an excellent sounding edition for Bass Trombone or Tuba and Piano of about 12 minutes in length for advanced performers.

Entia Imaginaria, from the Latin imaginary beings is a subject that fascinates me, especially after reading Jorge Luis Borges's Book of Imaginary Beings. This three movements composition include: 1. Phoenix - bird that dies by fire and then is reborn from its ashes; 2. Sirena (Mermaid) - Creature part woman, part fish, whose beauty and singing lured sailors against the rocks in the sea; 3. Hippogryphus (Hippogriff) - Winged creature with the head of griffin and horse body. It symbolizes an impossible union. This work was requested by Nuno Henriques (Bass Trombone), who I dedicate and was composed between December 2011 and February 2012. Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755280). Adages II is the second in a series of compositions based on familiar sayings. It is composed for Dr. Joseph Murrell and is for bass trombone and piano. There are five movements in this composition. 1. Strike while the iron is hot – This movement is in a fast tempo with a lot of syncopation and irregular meter change. The piano frequently plays two loud chords that indicate the striking. 2. Opposites attract – The opposites in this movement are a swing style and a classical style. Each has its moments to shine and yet one clearly influences the other. 3. Stop and Smell the roses – This movement is lyrical representing the beauty of smelling roses. A motif that contains rests is a reminder to stop and take time for the beautiful things in life. A contrapuntal middle section with steady sixteenth notes builds in intensity as another reminder that one needs to take time from the hectic pace of life to enjoy beauty. 4. Curiosity killed the cat – This movement is mostly soft, staccato, and furtive representing the curiosity of the cat. A loud chord or succession of chords indicates the cat getting into trouble. This happens a total of nine times representing the cat’s nine lives before the cat is finally doomed. 5. Look before you leap – As the adage implies, there are a lot of melodic leaps in this movement. Any scalar material or repeated note figures serve as a warning to look before one leaps.
