This song contains many advanced songwriting techniques and shows a complete mastery of advanced tonal harmony and voice leading. The verses are syllabic and arranged in 8 regular phrases. The last phrase is elided with a contrasting melismatic bridge that suddenly modulates to the lowered mediant, causing a foreign chromatic mediant relation. (F major to Ab major). Further drama is evoked by the voice-leading where an ascending leap of a minor 9th signals the beginning of the bridge. The bridge then modulates back to the original key for the refrain, which, like the verses is arranged in 8 regular phrases and elides once again into a final version of the bridge which functions this time as a coda.Â

One of that set was called Pleasant Landscape, which I have freely arranged for accompanied Instrumental Solo. I have slowed it down considerably from the original and marked it with passionate energy. The beauty and interest is created by the shaping and phrasing of this beautiful melodic line. It has a rubato feeling throughout with constant tempo changes like rall, molto rall, freely, accel, etc. In keeping with the characteristics of the Romantic period my arrangement is full of interpretive marks in every measure making it a great piece for auditions to show your technique and interpretation. Not too difficult to play but sounds quite advanced when all details are observed. The equally beautiful piano part provides great interplay of expressive harmony and countermelody. A beautiful piece to show your expressive musicianship and impress them in either concert or audition. Marked Intermediate due to the plethora of markings to observe, musicianship that is required for a mature performance, and a 2 octave range that will push the limits of some instruments.3:10 minutes, 5 page score, 2 page solo partTemporary recording of a piano reduction of total score.

Habanera Sunrise is a contemporary Latin Jazz solo that evokes the latent energy of a sunrise. The piano accompaniment is a pure milonga rhythm which is derived from tango and habanera. As one music scholar says milonga is an excited habanera. The melody is influenced by the African rhythms of cinquillo and tresillo which are also at the core of habaneras. This fusion sets up cross-rhythms and a challenging polymetric feel within a brisk 5/8 time signature. The accompaniment is mostly 3+2, but the melody is constantly shifting between 2+3, or 3+2, or 5 equal. Keith Terrett has done an outstanding job of injecting jazz and blues into these holiday favorites. The writing beginning in measure 13 of Ding Dong Merrily On High is outstanding. Check out the wonderful contrast in movement between the flute and bass. This arrangement of Xmas carols would be a wonderful addition to any future holiday program. Well done Keith! Have fun!
