Great for exams and Eisteddfods, Le Petit Negre is taken from Debussy’s ‘Children’s Corner’ , a collection of pieces for Piano that he dedicated to his daughter, Claude-Emma, after her death at the age of fourteen. Debussy used language that was in common usage at the time, but some of his titles, including this one, now sound unavoidably racist. In addition to syncopation, Debussy also uses other techniques in this piece that have been adopted by jazz musicians, for example, pentatonic scales and chromaticism.

Written in concert E flat major, which modulates to C major, the first part of the piece stays in the low register and any awkwards movement around the break has been avoided. The top note for the clarinet is the written A above the staff (written A5) and this occurs only once. The piece is around UK Associated Board Grade 3 and the piano part reasonably accessible. It's a slow, dreamy piece with full dynamic range and ideal for the easy-intermediate clarinet standard.

It has been used in film and television programs and known to almost everyone in Britain. Skye (also known as “The Isle of Skyeâ€) is the largest island of the Inner Hebrides. With an area of about 640 square miles, the island is about sixty miles long and lies close to the Scottish mainland.   The boat in the song (“Speed bonny boatâ€) refers to a small sailing ship that in 1746 “carried the lad who was born to be king†to the Isle of Skye. The lad in question was Prince Charles Edward Stuart known affectionately as “Bonnie Prince Charlie.†The song also refers to the Battle of Culloden of April 1746, the last ever battle on British soil, fought between the British Army and the army of Bonnie Prince Charlie.   In June 1746 and disguised as a maid-servant, Charles was secretly transported from the Hebridean island of Benbecula to the more southerly Isle of Skye. This is the event to which the song refers. The Skye Boat Song has its roots in a traditional Gaelic melody. In this lovely arrangement for B flat clarinet and piano, the piece begins in B flat concert, entirely in the clarinet's low register. The second section modulates to concert F mostly in the high register with the highest note being the C just above the treble staff. Movement around the break has been avoided. The arrangement is about UK ABRSM Grade 3 standard and it would make a splendid and rewarding addition to the repertoire of the young clarinet player.

The technical level is about Grade 3 (UK ABRSM) The range covers low F (written) to the A (written) just above the staff. Difficult movement over the break has been avoided. The clarinet part makes considerable use of quarter note triplets and tied notes. The piece has long lyrical phrases, beginning in concert G minor and ending in concert E flat. It is ideal for developing a sustained tone in the upper register. The piece is rewarding to perform and the piano part has been kept fairly straightforward throughout. The piece would be excdellent in a clarinet recital or could make a useful encore piece for the more advanced player.

The is a freely adapted arrangement of the popular English folk song Scarborough Fair which was made famous by Simon and Garfunkel in the 1960s. The piano accompaniment is fairly straight-forward and the clarinet part is printed in large easy-to-read notation. It is about the UK's ABRSM Grade 4 level. The arrangement starts in D minor (concert) the moves to A minor (concert). The lowest clarinet note is written A just under the treble staff and the top not is written B just above the staff. Awkward movement atound the break has been avoided. The duration is 02:50 and this lovely folk melody in the Dorian mode would make a really useful addition to the repertoire of a student clarinet player. The clarinet part and the piano accompaniment come in a single PDF file.

Jingle Bells arranged for Bb clarinet & piano. Jingle Bells is perhaps the most famous songs in American music history. James L. Pierpont published the song as One Horse Open Sleigh in the late 1850’s. Since its introduction, people began to insist that Pierpont wrote it for a Sunday school choir. However, it seems unlikely that such a secular song would be considered appropriate during that historical period for Sunday school.Christmas Repertoire Pierpont wrote the song for the Thanksgiving holidays, but over time people began to think of it more as a Christmas song. Some choirs adopted it as part of their Christmas repertoire in the 1860s and 1870s. Jingle Bells was first recorded in 1889 on a wax cylinder. Origins No one knows where Pierpont composed the song. One theory suggests he wrote it in Medford Massachusetts in 1850. Sleigh races were certainly popular in 19th Century Massachusetts. To this day, a commemorative placard appears in Medford square claiming that it is the birthplace of Jingle Bells. Others suggest that he wrote it in Savannah, Georgia where he was an organist and music director at the Unitarian Church. This theory gains support from the copyright date of 1857. We know he was living in Savannah by then. Traffic Signals Horse-drawn sleighs are relatively quiet in the snow. Consequently, horses were usually equipped with bell-laden straps so as to avoid accidents at blind intersections. Sleigh drivers in 19th Century New England were constantly vigilant, listening for the sounds of approaching horse-drawn sleighs. The tune imitates the rhythm that the trotting horse bells produce. Social Context Jingle Bells was sung as a drinking song at local revelries: during the song folks would rhythmically jangle the ice in their glasses. A sleigh ride gave couples an opportunity to be alone together. The term Jingle bells is a poetic descriptive adjective referring specifically to the more accurate term sleigh bells.
