Merengue de MerlÃn is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for two Flutes.This duet is based on the traditional Latin style of Merengue that emerged in the Dominican Republic during the Nineteenth Century. Merengue Tipico bands maintain the traditional instrumentation of the double-headed tambora drum, güira, accordion and vocal, while urban bands in the North American diaspora often add saxophone, bass and other percussion. The Merengue dance became hugely popular in the 1950s and new forms continue to draw audiences around the world.If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. The steady quintilla tambora rhythm is present throughout, and following the precise articulation in the score will help convey the style. The main challenge is the fast tempo and melodies should be clearly articulated. Merengue de MerlÃn has a performance time of around two and a half minutes at full tempo. Spanish Christmas Carol for 2 Flutes
The composer of the song La nana, balada al nio Jess was Jos Ramn Gomis, born in Novelda, Alicante;2 the lyrics are by Juan Francisco Muoz y Pabn. The Society of Spanish Authors published the score in 1904.3
The song was compiled by the musicologist Kurt Schindler in his work "Folk music and poetry of Spain and Portugal",4 as collected by the author in Medinaceli, Soria, around 1930.5 Someone sang the first eight bars of the melody composed by Jos Ramn Gomis, and some verses of the lyrics.6
The first recordings of the song are from 1931,7 performed by Marcos Redondo for the Casa Oden, and from 1932,8 performed by Julio Vidal and his group for La voz de su amo.
There is an arrangement of four mixed voices entitled Fuentecilla que corres. It was performed by Eduardo Cifre,9 in 1974 or 75.6 and is very popular among Spanish choirs.

The title page is followed by a copy of the permission of George the Second King of Great Britain, France and Ireland to print and publish two operas of Vocal and Instrumental Music intitled (sic), The Temple of Apollo which he has composed and employed others to compose, for a period of fourteen years.Sonatas 1 & 2 have three movements, No. 3 has four: No. 1 in D major - Andante, Allegro & AllegroNo. 2 in E minor - Andante, Allegro & Minuet & TrioNo. 3 in A major - Spiritoso, Allegro, Andantino & MinuetThe parts are of equal difficulty and move independently. The song was written by the Spanish Basque composer Sebastián Iradier (later Yradier) around 1860 after a visit to Cuba. Iradier was to die in obscurity within few years, never to learn how popular his song would become.There are more than one thousand versions of this song, and together with Yesterday by The Beatles, is one of the most-recorded songs in the history of music; it is certainly the most-recorded Spanish songHere it is arranged as a flute duet.
