This is the first of ‘VI SONATE A TRE Due Flauti col Basso’ by ‘Giuseppe San Martini Milanese’ published in Paris as his ‘Opera Prima’ (opus 1)* by Le Clerc and Boivin ‘avec privilege du Roi’ in 1736. Giuseppe’s surname varied progressively during his life from St. Martini via San Martini to Giuseppe Sammartini. The basso part would have been played on a cello or bassoon probably with the addition of a harpsichord filling out the harmony according to the figured bass. The trio works well with three players of intermediate ability or above. One or both flute parts can be played on oboe(s) or violin(s) and this would certainly have happened in the households of the wealthy amateurs who purchased the first edition.

The Court Jester is intended as a descriptive piece. The Jester was a member of the household of a nobleman or a monarch employed to entertain guests during royal court. Jesters were also traveling performers who entertained common folk at fairs and town markets, and the discipline continues into the modern day, where jesters perform at historical-themed events.This piece is in ternary form. The outer sections are to represent the general clowning around and playing pranks as a mischievous Jester does. The middle section by contrast is more lyrical to demonstrate a softer side to the personality, however this quickly transcends back to the final section where jokes, pranks and laughs have their way! It should be performed very briskly and lightly to capture the overall feel of the piece. The range in total is two and a half octaves and it is 4.00 minutes in length- Set at Intermediate level. He was a child prodigy and began composing music at the age of seven. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire, where he developed a mastery of the symphonic form and wrote several pieces for the orchestra. His works for the stage are among the most popular and beloved of the Romantic era, including the ballets Coppélia and Sylvia, and the opera Lakmé.Delibes was a pioneer in the use of orchestral color and instrumental effects to enhance the dramatic narrative of his works. His works are often praised for their lyricism, graceful melodies, and colorful orchestrations. His music is considered to be a bridge between the grandiose and romantic works of the French composers before him, such as Gounod and Berlioz, and the more intimate and melodic style of composers like Debussy and Ravel.Delibes’ influence can be heard in the works of later composers such as Stravinsky and Prokofiev, and his music continues to be performed and enjoyed today. The opera has been performed in opera houses all over the world and is considered one of Delibes' most popular works.The Duo des Fleurs, composed by French composer Léo Delibes, is a ballet pas de deux from the ballet Lakme, Act I. It is a beloved masterpiece of the Romantic period and is often performed as a standalone piece in many ballet performances. The piece is typically danced by two female ballet dancers and is known for its playful and lighthearted nature. Composed for the Earl of Abingdon London during the 1760s, this trio was written for a pair of flutes and cello or viola da gamba. Abel would have played the gamba part. It was the first of four trios which were afterwards published and sold by John Preston at his music Warehouse. This would have been an additional source of income for Abel. When the trios were played at the musical gatherings of John Preston's customers the parts would be played on whatever instruments were available, the flute parts on oboes, violins or even clarinets which were then pitched in C. A bassoon might be substituted for the cello . With versatility in mind I have included alternative parts: for clarinet in Bb in lieu of flute 2; clarinet in Bb or Bass clarinet in lieu of cello. All parts are well within the abilities of players of about grade 6 ABRSM.
