English • German.Xavier Boisselot studied composition at the Paris Conservatoire. In 1836 he won the 1er Grand prix de Rome with his cantata Velléda. His opera Ne touchez pas à la reine was first performed in 1847, followed by Mosquita la sorcière. Despite growing success, after 1850 he spent less time working on composition as he took over the management of his father’s piano factory Boisselot & Fils in Marseille. Flautist Jean Rémusat came from Bordeaux. In 1832 he won the 1er prix at the Paris Conservatoire, where he studied with Jean-Louis Tulou. He worked as principal flautist at the Queen’s Theatre in London until its closure in 1853. After a few more years working at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris he went to work as a conductor in Shanghai, where he died at the age of 65. Rémusat – generally referred to without his first name – is often encountered by flautists as the arranger of well-known pieces from that time. Plate no. 12099 / published in 1853.

Published by David McKeown (A0.587787). The most popular of Scott Joplin’s piano rags during his lifetime, The Maple Leaf Rag was published in 1899. Joplin lived for a while in Sedalia, Missouri and the Maple Leaf Club in that town is thought to have provided the name for this composition. It provided Joplin with a steady income for the rest of his life, and while he requested that it be played at his funeral, his wife refused as she felt it inappropriate. It was the first track on Joshua Rifkin’s famous 1970 revival recording of Joplin’s music and, never waning in popularity, it has featured in hundreds of films.This version for Flute and Piano includes all four sections of the original composition. The tempo in recorded versions varies widely between 72 and 126, so the marking of 92 is a suggestion only.Musicians at an advanced intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. In the Hall of the Mountain KingGrieg BackgroundIn the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions. Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia.LegacyGrieg is celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen.Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46)Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg indeed depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain.Holberg Suite and Misc. SummaryIt must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed by and large many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. In any event, Grieg himself performed and recorded the bulk of these pieces toward the end of his life.

In the Hall of the Mountain KingGrieg BackgroundIn the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions. Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia.LegacyGrieg is celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen.Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46)Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg indeed depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain.Holberg Suite and Misc. SummaryIt must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed by and large many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. In any event, Grieg himself performed and recorded the bulk of these pieces toward the end of his life.

The present arrangement was conceived for one of the Caroline animated films by Marco de Gastyne during the late 1950s. Given the time period, it is probable that Tailleferre was writing this for Jean-Pierre Rampall, who performed on a number of Tailleferre film scores during this period.In the surreal ballet Paris-Magie, the spritely musique represents a fashionably dressed widow who believes that she has found her dead husband's stuffed head at the Paris Flea Market. A few dynamic markings have been added, although Tailleferre did not include many markings in her manuscript score.

English • German.Having grown up in a family of organ-builders and organists, the path of Charles-Marie Widor as an organist was predestined. In 1870 he moved from Lyon, the town of his birth, to Paris and became titular organist at Saint-Sulpice. In 1890 Widor succeeded César Franck as professor of organ studies at the Paris Conservatoire, where six years later he was appointed professor of composition, too. Alongside orchestral works, solo concertos, vocal pieces and chamber music, Widor’s most important musical achievement was his contribution to the genre of the organ symphony. His Suite op. 34 for flute and piano, structured around a Romance (1881) and composed for Paul Taffanel, may be considered as marking the beginning of the modern French flute school: here for the first time a composition makes full use of the bright tone of the Böhm flute, as introduced to the music world by Taffanel and his pupils. This Sérénade op. 65 is the arrangement of a duo for harmonium and organ. No further information about the arranger has been found. Plate no. 27148 / published in 1903.

This brilliant Contemporary Classical piece borrows from many different styles. It is a Sonatina in 3 sections. The buoyant first section is quite Classical with a bit of fanfare, and then an Alberti Bass section that is an homage to Mozart. The expressive middle section is New Age in style and is in 7/4 Time Signature (3/4 then 4/4 in alternating sets, so not hard). The final section goes through several themes and a key change; having an ornamented Baroque theme, then a Classical theme reminiscent of the opening, then concluding with a Romantic era toccata. There are Chorale-like bridges linking the many sections and themes.

English • German.The Italian Giulio Briccialdi was taught to play the flute chiefly by his father. His virtuoso career began at an early age and he was appointed as flute teacher to the Count of Syracuse in Sicily. On numerous tours his playing drew enthusiastic responses from audiences and critics alike: ‘The only really good flute-player that I have ever seen’, wrote Rockstro in A Treatise on the Flute. In 1871 Briccialdi was appointed as a professor at the Conservatoire in Florence. Having been introduced to the newly constructed cylindrical flute by Theobald Böhm in 1847, he added some minor further modifications of his own. His Bb thumb key was a useful addition to the original Böhm system subsequently known in the history of flute making as the ‘Biccialdi thumb key’. As a composer, apart from a single opera he mainly wrote pieces for the flute in the fashion of the time: arrangements, sets of variations and virtuoso showpieces a large number of which were published by Schott. In the original publication of Allegro alla Spagnuola op. 69 bars 23 to 41 were omitted from the score and only printed in the accompanying flute part. For this new edition the missing piano accompaniment has been reconstructed using the material available. Plate no. 12098 / published in 1853.
