ISBN 9790570484294.The composition of this sonata spans the period of my undergraduate studies at Durham University. In the first movement, an overall A minor feel is challenged by the near-atonal way in which the main gesture is developed; and by the intermittently chromatic, pentatonic and whole-tone scalic material which emerges in the piano accompaniment. In the coda [from bar 100] obsessive repetition of chords and single notes threatens to take over, until the tension is resolved onto bare E's (the note with which the movement began). Part of this movement was written in Siena on a summer holiday with my parents; the vivid presence of the Tuscan cicadas is echoed in the flute's fluttertonguing. The Passacaglia second movement can also be performed as a standalone piece. Shades of Bartok's 'night music' style are evident in the central section, where after a short flute cadenza the soloist flutters and mutters above limpid piano arpeggios. In the outer sections, a calm flute melody appears above the block chords of the piano's passacaglia cycle. In contrast to the heat of Italy, this movement was inspired by the image of an icy river connecting different wintry landscapes of cold light snow. A scherzo finale rounds off the sonata, dominated by trills emerging from a theme which rhythmically reconfigures the main gesture from the opening movement. In the central Trio [bars 39-49] the melody from the second movement is recalled to bind everything together. As with the first movement, the coda [from bar 99] develops its own repetitive momentum.

A brand new solo for flute and piano. There's a little bit of horseplay between the flute and piano, the flautist needs to be able to double tongue and to use flutter tongue. There's a bit of a simple cadenza to start, followed by some interplay between the flute and piano pretending to tune. Then follows a march-like section with some deliberate discords in the flute. As this section becomes louder and more animated, the players should act cross with each other!Then follows a dreamy little melodic section in waltz time. There's lots of chromatic work in this section. The piano now dominates for a short while with a melodic idea, based on the flute's waltz melody bot with tremolos which gives the music an almost zither-like feel (expect the Third man to walk on stage. After this, the flute returns to dominance but gets interrupted by the piano who is missing being in the limelight!At the change to a quicker tempo and a major key - still with 'out of tune notes' the two 'play nicely together' for a while before it all goes to pot again when the flute develops hiccups! This leads back to an altered version of the original march tune, but faster.This time the two find common ground on the 8ve leaps and the piece finishes with a short codetta. A great show-off piece for the finale of a concert, allowing both the soloist and accompanist to sparkle.

The turbulent opening is immediately arresting. and one can imagine the swirling wind flowing around powerfully. Pulsing rhythms and captivating brass lines reinforce this sense of power, before the mood breaks into a more gentle duo moment for flute and harp. Knehans' orchestration is imaginative and full of colour, making effective use of different timbral combinations and creating a transparency of texture through the use of solo lines from around the orchestra. The flute part is dazzling and takes centre stage with a sense of charismatic virtuosity. Challenging and exhilarating throughout, the first movement has the sort of energy one might associate with the opening movement of the lbert concerto, but intensified and developed to reflect the 21st century flute and the modem world. The second movement has a greater sense of stillness, and the flute line weaves around relatively static strings, low woodwind. Despite the stillness, an underlying intensity gives the music a brooding feel; this is music that deals with profound ideas, and as such, it is vital that the music, too, has depth. Knehans has achieved this convincingly; this is a piece which demands attention and holds you in its spell. The final movement is full of rhythmic punchiness and fantastic orchestral energy. The scoring is once again highly imaginative, making use of bassoons and low brass in pounding rhythms punctuated by the strings. Over all of this, (flutist) Gareth Davies astonishes and dazzles; displaying not only a phenomenal technique but also a magnetic energy and charisma which is spellbinding . I would not be exaggerating to say that this is one of the best flute recordings I have heard for a long time.An impressively vibrant compositional voice. This sonata conveys different moods using various styles in each of the movements, all of which take some liberty and, at times, are vague with form.The first movement, inspired by Claude Debussy, uses a quasi mirror form, with the two motives connecting with a sudden yet seamless tempo change, which is supported by the driving rhythm in the piano, and a development in the middle of the movement.The second movement is a funeral march and is based on the chord progression built around the sustained B natural in the flute, which conveys a dreamlike atmosphere. As the progression transforms, there is an increasing sense of dread that unfolds until this feeling becomes primal before collapsing in on itself at the climax of the movement. From there, the progression returns more actively with, although not as strong as before, a sense of dread still present for the remainder of the movement. The movement is in ternary form (ABA), with a development in the first A section.The third movement is a more clearly defined rondo form and is based on themes that undergo subtle changes each time they return. Other themes include a recurring call and response between the treble and bass lines in the piano, which the flute participates in this exchange when it is presented again later, a reference to the second movement's progression, and a modal theme that floats in terms of harmonic and melodic structure. When the initial theme returns for the final time, a coda restates previous ideas as the finale gradually increases its tempo and concludes the piece. This movement is the most technically challenging, especially considering that I asked Natalie how fast she can double tongue. In general, there are a fair amount of high passages and big leaps. Ricucci-HillA trio for flute, cello, and piano, Advanced, 52 PagesForest Rituals (2016, rev. 2017) is a piece with various layers. On the surface, it is a trio based around the image of a pagan ritual occuring at the setting of the sun and the rising of the moon, full of life, dance, reverence, and mystery. On a deeper, more personal level, it is a piece about new beginnings. Ricucci-Hill wrote the piece for the Zodiac Music Academy and Festival in Valdeblore, France which was their first international performance as well as their first music festival. Upon returning, the piece was revised utilizing the knowledge and experience gained from the festival, which foresaw a shift in their compositional voice. Forest Rituals was awarded 3rd in the 2017 Abundant Silence Composition Competition.

The 'Cadenza' for Flute, Cello, and Piano, was written in late 2018 and updated in the Spring of 2019 for its first performance in London of that year with the Epoch Ensemble. The work is written for highly skilled players, and utilises three sections where the Flute and Cello begin far apart, merge together and then distance onesful from one another again. The piano part is based on the note 'A', and this pitch locks the whole structure together.The piece should be performed with all players using the full score, as the simultaneous use of free-time and very strict coordination requires all players to be aware of what is going on around them. The cello will need to detune their lowest C-string so that its fundamental pitch is now A, and the part has been written such that the fourth string is a transposing line, so that the player can read as if it were in C for the purposes of fingerings, with the sounding pitch a minor third lower.Any performances, particularly those that are local or national premières, must be made aware of by the composer, who appreciates all opportunities for performances.
