So many childhood memories of Dad revolved around water-summer vacations spent with my family camping by a mountain stream, fishing in a lake and outings to ocean beaches near my childhood home in Southern California. This programmatic work is in three movements. A Cool Mountain Stream utilizes the pentatonic scale to depict a stream as it meanders along, frequently bouncing over rocks and sometimes heading down a slope, eventually ending in a small waterfall that empties into a deep pool. During a summer vacation, my family camped by a stream that was a natural waterslide. We spent many happy hours sliding down the waterslide into the pool below.A Quiet Morning on the Lake uses the repetitive rocking motion of the piano to represent the soothing motion of the rowboat as I spent summer vacations fishing for trout with my dad on a quiet lake in the San Bernardino Mountains.Frolic in the Surf brings out the playfulness felt at the ocean beach, while getting used to the water temperature and trying to predict when the waves will hit the shore. Many summer days were spent on Southern California beaches with family and friends, body surfing, tanning and simply playing in the waves. Scored for flute and piano. 5:00 Level 3 Phyllis Avidan Louke (b. 1954), a flutist, teacher, and award-winning composer, living in Portland, Oregon, has been arranging and composing since 1990, with over 70 pieces published. Many of her works have received recognition in the annual National Flute Association Newly Published Music Competition and other composition competitions. Ms. Louke has also been the recipient of annual ASCAP awards since 2004. Her compositions and arrangements have been much-performed nationally and internationally and many have been recorded. In particular, we see this in the music of Grieg (Norway), Finland (Sibelius), and Smetana (Bohemia).  Dvořák relied markedly on rhythms and other characteristics of Moravian and Bohemian folk music. Ascent to Fame Dvořák was truly a child musical prodigy on the violin. The premiere performances of his compositions notably occurred in 1872 and 1873. He submitted his First Symphony in particular to a German competition, but it failed to win. Consequently, in 1874 he presented two more symphonies to the Austrian State Prize for Composition. Johannes Brahms was the principal of the jury and was accordingly very impressed. They forthwith awarded the prize to Dvořák in 1874, 1876, and 1877. At this point, Brahms thereupon endorsed Dvořák to the publisher Simrock. Later, the publisher commissioned Dvořák to compose the Slavonic Dances, Op. 46. These became popular overnight and, as a result, Dvořák's worldwide status was launched. International Status Dvořák visited England upon invitation nine times. On each visit, he frequently conducted performances of his own compositions. He conducted concerts of his music, especially in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Eventually, the Prague Conservatory in fact appointed Dvořák as a professor. There, to be sure, he wrote his famous Dumky Trio. United States Consequently, the National Conservatory of Music of America appointed him as director in 1892. As a result, Dvořák composed his two most famous symphonic works: the Symphony No. 9 (From the New World), which spread his name universally, and his Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, one of the most famous of all cello works. Moreover, he wrote his most celebrated American String Quartet during this time. Grieg Background In the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions. Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen. Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46) Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg indeed depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. 'Cradle song' is the 4th movement of 'The Gold-fingered' Suite for kaval & orchestra written in 2011. The composition won 2nd award at the 11th 'International composition competition for symphonic work in 7/8' where it was premiered by soloist Kiril Belezhkov (the composer's brother) and New Symphony Orchestra in Sofia (see the YouTube link). It was also one of the works by Belezhkov for which he had won the 'Creative activity' cathegory of the 'Musician of the year 2011' vote of the Bulgarian National Radio. At the ceremony held at the National Palace of Culture it was performed again but in chamber version - kaval (Kiril Belezhkov again), 2 guitars (one of them performed by Vasil Belezhkov) and string quartet (consisted of NSO members who already had played the original orchestral score). Later the composer did this one version for flute and piano and Kiril (who is flutist as well) edited the ornaments in the solo part. This version is yet to be performed.

The three songs in this publication were originally from a set of six arranged for mezzo-soprano and piano in 1963 when the arranger, Colin Kirkpatrick was a music student in London. These new arrangements for flute and piano have retained many features of the original but have been slightly adapted for instrumental use. They would make excellent recital pieces for the intermediate player. The three songs are: 1. Cysga di, fy Mhlentyn Tlws (Sleep, my Pretty Child)2. Migildi Magildi (Song at the Smithy)3.
