Scriabin: Prelude Op. 11 No. 2 for Alto Flute & Piano
Flûte traversière et Piano

(+)
Flute,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549473 Composed by Alexander Scriabin. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Concert,Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #3499833. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549473). Score: 8 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano part: 2 pages. Duration: 3:10. An introspective and meditative work with a lot of dynamic and phrasing nuance. Works well for church meditations or recital encores.BackgroundOp.11/2 Alto Clarinet version. First of all, Scriabin composed mostly for the solo piano and also the orchestra. This is probably because he was a gifted pianist and therefore certainly appreciated the piano. Scriabin grew up in the late Romantic period, consequently, he was fond of the great piano masters of the time. As a result, he wrote his first noteworthy compositions in the manner of Chopin and Liszt.FormsLikewise, Scriabin used many of the same forms as Chopin. These certainly include the étude, prelude, nocturne, and even the mazurka. In contrast, as he developed his own sense of style his music became more and more unusual. So, the last five of his Piano Sonatas do not have a key signature and therefore lean towards atonality.PhilosophyScriabin also developed a keen interest in philosophy and likewise poetry. He was above all particularly fascinated by Nietzsche, Delville, and Blavatsky. Consequently, he finally established his own ideas about metaphysics and certainly mysticism. Scriabin consequently advanced theories about the relationship between color and musical keys.SynesthesiaHe also may have experienced a condition called synesthesia where he could probably sense a response created from a different stimulus. Therefore, it was almost as if he could see music and hear colors. Scriabin, therefore, arranged the colors in a circle similar to the circle-of-fifths and assigned each key area a color. Finally, he assigned the key of C to the color red, while the key of G was orange. Similarly, he assigned D to yellow, A to green, and so forth. Strangely, he did not differentiate between major and minor key colors. MultimediaHence, his ability to translate colors into music certainly gave Scriabin a most noteworthy interest in creating multimedia events. Furthermore, He designed his biggest work, the Mysterium, to last an entire week. Even more, Scriabin made plans not only for music, but also colored lights, incense, and dancing. He designed the performance to occur in the foothills of the Himalaya mountains. The Mysterium was never performed, and only sketches of the work remain.Modern PerformancesIn modern times, we often experience performances of Scriabin’s most famous completed works accompanied by colored laser lights and incense. These are the Poem of Ecstasy (completed in 1908) and the Poem of Fire (completed in 1910). The lighting effects for these early performances were accomplished by the clavier à lumiéres. It was a keyboard instrument that projected colored light onto a screen.

Bach-Gounod: Ave Maria, Schwencke version for Alto Flute & Piano
Flûte traversière et Piano
Flute,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.550917 Composed by J. S. Bach - Go…
(+)
Flute,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.550917 Composed by J. S. Bach - Gounod. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas,Contemporary,Easter,Wedding. Score and part. 11 pages. Jmsgu3 #4888281. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.550917). This arrangement features the controversial Schwencke measure (ms. 27) that was originally introduced in 1783 by Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke. The convenient 1st & 2nd endings provide an option for extended performance. Duration with repeat - 4:50. Score: 7 pages. Solo part: 1 page, piano part: 4 pages. Based on Prelude #1 in C Major from the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1. Well suited for church meditations or school programs or recital encores. Ave Maria Ave Maria is a Catholic prayer that consequently asks for the mother of Jesus (Mary) to intercede. Charles Gounod composed a famous version of the Ave Maria. He was a French Romantic composer who overlaid a new melody on an existing Bach chord progression. The progression is from Bach’s Prelude No. 1 from Well-Tempered Clavier I. This version, as well as Schubert’s version, have become essential items at weddings, masses, and funerals. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio. History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as a court composer. Style It seems like Bach created an engaging new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV. Voyager NASA launched two Voyager spacecraft in 1977. Onboard are phonograph records with sounds, music, and images of life on Earth. The purpose of the launch was to inform intelligent extraterrestrial life forms about conditions on Earth. The music on the disc is varied. There is Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Stravinsky among others. However, because Bach is so important in our music history, it contains three times more Bach than all the others combined.

Flute,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549224 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Baroque,Holiday,Standards,Wedding. Score and part. 9 pages. Jmsgu3 #3468208. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549224). J. S. Bach BWV 508. Bist du bei mir Bach adapted this aria from a lost Stölzel opera called Diomedes. He changed the original orchestral instrumentation to soprano, strings, and continuo. He also modified the voice-leading making it sound more like a Bach composition. The work appears as BWV 508 No. 25 in the Anna Magdalena Notebook No. 2. Source Only a few remnants of the original opera have survived. Historians speculate that Anna Magdalena got the song from the Leipzig Opera after the bankruptcy of 1720. Chances are good, though, that the tune was a favorite of everyone in Leipzig at the time. Lyrics When thou art near, I go with joyTo death and to my rest.O how joyous would my end be,If your fair hands Would close my faithful eyes. - Unknown Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history.

Flute,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549225 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Baroque,Easter,Standards,Wedding. Score and part. 9 pages. Jmsgu3 #3468220. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549225). J. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Flute,Piano - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549456 Composed by Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 15 pages. Jmsgu3 #3497233. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549456). Score: 10 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano part: 3 pages. Duration: 4:25. Not difficult, but requires sensitivity & dynamic control. Suitable for recitals, church meditations, or school programs. School Years First of all, Sullivan attended music school at the Royal Academy of Music. Because Sullivan was so talented, the Academy awarded him the Mendelssohn Scholarship for two years in a row. He, therefore, studied with John Goss, who studied with Thomas Atwood, who in turn studied with Mozart. Sullivan similarly studied the piano at the Academy with Arthur O’Leary. Study Abroad During his first year, he also earned money by singing solos in the Chapel Royal. At the end of his second year, the Academy consequently continued his scholarship and sent him to study at the Leipzig Conservatoire. He certainly studied composition, and likewise counterpoint and piano. Hence, during his final year in Leipzig, Sullivan finally completed his graduation composition project: Incidental Music for Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Association with Gilbert It seems like Sullivan built the bulk of his composing career largely in the 1860s. As a result, he became famous for his incidental music for the Tempest and his Irish Symphony. He, therefore, began collaborating with the poet W. S. Gilbert in the 1870s. Rather than focus on serious opera, Gilbert and Sullivan, in contrast, concentrated on comic opera such as H. M. S. Pinafore, the Pirates of Penzance, and the Mikado. Therefore, certainly as a result of his education and experience, Sullivan composed a total of 24 operas, 11 symphonic works, 10 choral pieces. Even more, he wrote a large number of noteworthy hymns such as Onward Christian Soldiers. The general style of his music is maybe similar to Mendelssohn, Schumann, and perhaps Liszt. It seems like Sullivan was fond of writing distinct melodies for each character in his operettas. His melodies combine together as the characters did. Furthermore, he was a master orchestrator, and therefore played the flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone fluently. The Lost Chord Sullivan wrote his most noteworthy song the Lost Chord in 1877. As a result, it was a great success and was certainly performed all over the world by a variety of singers such as Enrico Caruso. Because Sullivan was the most famous composer in England, the Lost Chord became the most famous of all British or American songs of the 1870s and 1890s. Consequently, in 1888 Thomas Edison recorded The Lost Chord for the phonograph. It was one of the first songs ever recorded. Furthermore, Queen Victoria knighted Sullivan in 1883. Â

Flute and orchestra - difficult - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q25027 For flute and orchestral groups. Composed by Joerg Widmann. This edition: piano reduction with solo part. Il Flauto traverso. Downloadable, Piano reduction with solo part. Duration 22 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q25027. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q25027). This ‚Suite’ is not one of my ‘epic’ instrumental concertos such as the concertos for cello, violin or oboe, but a substantially smaller-structured series of dance forms arranged into a suite. Sunken worlds suddenly emerge here, only to reach the surface, hover in dangerously distorted fashion and then sink back to the bottom. Almost every individual movement allots the solo flute a specific tonal colouring and an instrumental group from the orchestra: in the opening Allemande, the flutes of the orchestra (including alto and bass flute and later also piccolo to include the entire flute family); the string section in the Sarabande; in both chorales (extremely muted in the first and brutalist in the second), the brass etc.; and it is only in the concluding Badinerie that all orchestral groups are combined, although they are terraced in the Baroque style, one following another, seldom all playing simultaneously. This permits the flute to remain the provider of all impulses; it attaches itself to the wide variety of instrumental colours, becomes suffused with these colours and thereby shines in different lights – acerbic, pale and radiant. This first performance marks the conclusion of my two-year residence with the Cleveland Orchestra. The immense versatility of this fine body of sound (which is indeed treated as such with the sum of its parts) and the exciting dark timbre of its principal flautist Joshua Smith have to a great extent determined the form and tonal character of my Flûte en suite. Loons are social migratory birds that communicate with each other via wails (calls to one another), tremolos (warnings to others about impending danger), yodels (territorial demonstrations), and coo-ing (quiet contentment). The opening of “Breeze†is a yodel in D Major that dissolves into a lapping piano accompaniment – the backdrop for a measured loon soliloquy. The piano restates the loon tune with the flute echoing in canon. The loon echoes dissipate in an undulating transition to a B section featuring the traditional Irish tune, St. Columba, first published by George Petrie in 1855. The tune is presented in D Mixolydian over a repeated bass line that is meant to evoke the rhythmic paddling of a canoe. As the tune ends, the “loons†pick up their own improvisation over the bass line, again in canon. There are only slight alterations in the closing section, casting “Breeze†in a balanced ABA’ form.

Flute,Piano - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.971652 Composed by Jeffrey Hoover. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and part. 35 pages. Musicart Publications #4797933. Published by Musicart Publications (A0.971652). In three movements, Romantic Sonata - Poems of Light (flute and piano) communicates how light can be a metaphor for the emotional and spiritual aspects of life. There are also three paintings - also created by the composer - joining hearing with sight as a poetic way of understanding ideas and emotions.Of Light and Shadow possesses a monothematic sonata design (rather than a two-theme structure), with a primary musical theme that is developed, and a brief closing section. Colors in the Clouds, the second movement of the work, does not differ greatly in tempo from the first movement, but rather is more relaxed in character. A slower middle section of this movement explores tone color through expressive use of extended techniques for the flute. Prism of the Heart is variation of the classical chaconne, with an introduction and a closing section. The conclusion of the first movement is developed and becomes the closing section of the third movement. This connects the first and third movements, bringing one back to where one started, yet experiencing change after the musical journey. The score and flute part in this edition are arranged to be printed double-sided, with correct page turns, directly from the PDF. Jeffrey Hoover's compositions- music ranging from soloist to symphony orchestra -have received recognition through the prestigious Trieste prize, the international Luigi Russolo competition, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications fellowships and more than 20 commissions. He is a member of the ACME roster of Mu Phi Epsilon, recognized for distinguished achievement as a composer. One unique aspect of Hoover’s work is when he combines composition with his paintings, creating synergetic art that intrigues and captivate audiences and performers alike. His paintings are seen in exhibitions and in concerts where his paintings are projected while musicians perform his music. Hoover’s background as a performer includes both classical and jazz music, as saxophonist and conductor. His book The Arts and Society: Making New Worlds is published by Kendall Hunt Publishing. Hoover was born on September 11, 1959, in Anderson, Indiana. He holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts (Composition and Interdisciplinary Fine Arts) from Texas Tech University, as well as and .Sc. from Ball State University. His career in higher education has included both faculty and arts administration appointments.

Published by David McKeown (A0.592535). It’s Been a Long Long Time is arranged as a solo for one Flute with Piano accompaniment. It’s Been a Long Long Time is best known to modern audiences as the song at the end of The Avengers, Endgame, where Steve Rogers, after seventy years, finally gets his dance with Peggy Carter. The song of course, is much older. Two versions of It’s Been a Long Long Time topped the charts in late 1945, and as US servicemen returned from Europe and the Pacific, it perfectly caught the mood of the times. One version was by Bing Crosby, and the other by the Harry James Orchestra featuring Kitty Kallen on vocals. It is the latter version that is heard in Endgame and the one that forms the basis of this arrangement.Musicians at an intermediate standard will find It’s Been a Long Long Time ideal for formal and informal concert performances. with both solo instrument and piano enjoying plenty of melodic interest. The separate solo part is included with the piano score in the same pdf file. The overall performance time is just over two and a half minutes. The American Heritage Dictionary defines mosaic as a picture or decorative design made by setting small colored pieces, such as tile, in mortar. The musical ideas in this composition are treated in a similar fashion. The small colored pieces can be compared to the musical motifs of the composition. Sometimes these fragments form a larger unit and become a recognizable melody. At other times, the fragments are combined differently therefore creating a variation to the original idea. Throughout the three-movement composition, this technique has been employed to create loose formal structures that still have unity and variety through the use of contrasting sections. The three movements themselves create contrast by being organized in a fast-slow-fast arrangement. The musical language is tonal with frequent shifts in the tonal center and with harmony in thirds and fourths. It was been recorded by Cristina Ledford and Michael McGhee on the CD Mosaic on Emeritus Recordings label.

Bach-Gounod: Ave Maria for Flute and Piano

(+)
Composed by J. S. Bach - C. Gounod. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. Praise & Worship, Easter, Mother's Day, Wedding, Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Solo Part. 6 pages. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications
This ever-popular piece is often performed at weddings, funerals and many other solemn ceremonial events. It has always been a favorite among instrumental players and often used in recitals or concert encores. In 1853, the well-known French composer Charles Gounod added his own melody over a rippling keyboard accompaniment which was a slightly adapted version of the Prelude No. 1 in C major, BWV846, from Book I of J. S. Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier, published in 1722. The title of the “combined” piece was Méditation sur le Premier Prélude de Piano de S. Bach. Gounod’s original arrangement transposed Bach’s keyboard part from C major into F major and it was scored for violin (or cello), organ and piano. In 1859, the French music publishing company Jacques-Léopold Heugel brought out a vocal version based on the familiar Latin text. Ave Maria (Hail Mary) is a traditional Catholic prayer addressed to the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus.
The version of Bach's prelude which Gounod used included the so-called "Schwencke measure" (m. 27 in this arrangement), a measure (bar) allegedly added by the German composer and pianist Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke (1767-1822) in an attempt to correct what was considered a harmonic weakness in the original. Whether there actually was a “harmonic weakness” (or possibly an error in the manuscript) remains a matter of conjecture but the fact remains that the most familiar-sounding version of this piece, recorded countless times by both singers and instrumentalists includes this Schwencke measure. It is therefore included in this arrangement.
Some published arrangements show minor inconsistencies in the rhythm of the melody. This arrangement uses the familiar rhythm of the Ave Maria version as it appeared in the 1859 edition.

Piano Accompaniment, Flute - Early Intermediate - Digital Download Composed by John Newton. Arranged by David McKeown. Christian, Gospel, Spiritual, Sacred, Praise & Worship. Score, Solo Part. 3 pages. Published by David McKeown
Amazing Grace is a beautiful hymn arranged here for Solo Flute and Piano.

Amazing Grace is perhaps the best-known and best-loved hymn in the world. The writer, John Newton, led a dissolute life as sailor in the slave trade for many years before marriage, along with a close encounter with death at sea, dramatically changed his perspective. He lived out his later years as a devout and charismatic clergyman in the English countryside, renowned for his direct and personal style. The words he wrote in Amazing Grace are an intimate retelling of his spiritual journey.

The hymn was written in 1773, and was sung to many different melodies initially, but since the mid nineteenth century it has become most closely associated with the famous folk tune melody presented here, New Britain.

The standard is early intermediate. Players with a year or two’s experience will enjoy playing Amazing Grace. This gospel hymn is ideal for use in concerts or worship, formal or informal.
