This is a lively arrangement of the Allegro theme taken from the 1st movement of Haydn's Symphony No. 104 - one of Haydn's London symphonies. The allegro is arranged here for flute and piano, but can easily be played on violin or other instruments suited to the range. The range of the flute part is from C-sharp5 (octave above middle C), to a high E (E6) - a range that would approximately suite a flautist at Grade 3 level - upper end of easy/beginner. The piano accompaniment has been arranged to be at the higher end of easy - with some more complex elements including octave and running quaver passages. Dynamics and articulation have been added in as a guide only. This download includes a score and separate flute part. The original work was written in 1795 while Haydn was living in London and was premiered to great acclaim. It remains a popular choice today for concerts around the world. This arrangement could work nicely alongside an arrangement of the second movement - or as part of a medley of short pieces in a concert. The expected duration of the piece is likely to be between 1.5 to 2 minutes long, though the arrangement can be played at a tempo suiting the individual performer. This sonata conveys different moods using various styles in each of the movements, all of which take some liberty and, at times, are vague with form.The first movement, inspired by Claude Debussy, uses a quasi mirror form, with the two motives connecting with a sudden yet seamless tempo change, which is supported by the driving rhythm in the piano, and a development in the middle of the movement.The second movement is a funeral march and is based on the chord progression built around the sustained B natural in the flute, which conveys a dreamlike atmosphere. As the progression transforms, there is an increasing sense of dread that unfolds until this feeling becomes primal before collapsing in on itself at the climax of the movement. From there, the progression returns more actively with, although not as strong as before, a sense of dread still present for the remainder of the movement. The movement is in ternary form (ABA), with a development in the first A section.The third movement is a more clearly defined rondo form and is based on themes that undergo subtle changes each time they return. Other themes include a recurring call and response between the treble and bass lines in the piano, which the flute participates in this exchange when it is presented again later, a reference to the second movement's progression, and a modal theme that floats in terms of harmonic and melodic structure. When the initial theme returns for the final time, a coda restates previous ideas as the finale gradually increases its tempo and concludes the piece. This movement is the most technically challenging, especially considering that I asked Natalie how fast she can double tongue. In general, there are a fair amount of high passages and big leaps. This is a piece for flute and piano duo. Fastnet Rock, home to the Fastnet Lighthouse, is Ireland’s most southerly point situated in the Atlantic Ocean, famous for massive waves that engulf the island during storms. Three photographs (see below) and the lighthouse’s history were my inspiration for this duet, with the different images and ideas that they created, influencing my composition’s structure, themes and ideas at play. The piece starts at sunset and finishes at sunrise, with four sections each representing a different moment that follow a gradually developing structure through the first three sections before a gentle reprise of the ideas from Section 1 (S1) in Section 4 (S4). This gives a cyclicity to the piece, furthered by the tonal regions explored in each of the sections; Ebmaj to Amin to Bmin to Amin to Ebmaj. S1 invokes thoughts of the colours of sunset It is divided into four sub-sections, characterised by either solo flute or flute with piano, with each section exploring a different range of colours generated by their keys. Throughout, accidentals provide additional colour reminiscent of light diffracted during a sunset with the piano in the duo section voiced low in its range adding warmth explored through pivot chords. The flute plays in a very free recitative style, allowing the flautist individual expression emphasising the organicity of sunset as each performer will express this section differently. Section 2 (S2) and Section 3 (S3) are closely related, focusing on night-time through to sunrise in S4, with S2 providing the build up to the events of S3. In S2 the piano plays at the extremes of its range with widely spaced chords and no sense of beat, creating stillness and a sense of uneasiness through the constantly and irregularly beating A. The flute represents the rising storm and wind playing an organically-evolving motif beginning low in range, before gradually adding more notes and slowly rising, eventually reaching a dramatic climax which explores the extremities of its range whilst accelerating into S3. The drama and large gestures of S3 represent an Atlantic storm, a wall of oscillating sound through repeated piano ostinatos and constant use of the sustain pedal. Coupled with the frequently changing time-signature creating a sense of wild waves rolling in the ocean, the chordal bars percussively suggesting waves hitting the island. The flute captures the drama and emotion of the storm and the whistling wind, with long rising and falling gestures exploring the instrument’s very extremities. S4 brings the morning after the storm. We hear the same flute idea as in S1, this time played in the sadder Amin, communicating a sense of loss and despair following the storm. The piano emulates the now gently lapping waves against the rocks of Fastnet with the triplet motif in the bass. The right-hand of the piano plays a chordal accompaniment as in S1 but much slower, representing the slowly emerging colours of a sunrise which become richer and richer like the chords before the sunrise in the final few bars with a move into Ebmaj.

One of his most popular and widely recognized works, it is the only movement from the Carnival Suite that Saint-Saëns permitted to be performed publicly during his lifetime. This is an excellent recital encore to demonstrate melodic playing and strategic phrasing. The Carnival of the AnimalsThe Carnival of the Animals is an entertaining musical suite of fourteen movements by Camille Saint-Saëns. The work was composed for private performance by an ensemble of two pianos and solo instruments. The Swan (No. 13) is among the fourteen most famous movements. In its entirety, it lasts about 25 minutes. Saint-Saëns BackgroundCharles-Camille Saint-Saëns 1835 – 1921) was, by all means, in particular, a famous French composer, brilliant organist, and significant musical mastermind of the Romantic era. Indeed, his most famous compositions, in the long run, include his Piano Concerto No. 2 (1868), Cello Concerto No. 1 (1872), and the Danse macabre (1874). Notwithstanding, we must also add Violin Concerto No. 3 (1880), Symphony No. 3 (the Organ Symphony, 1886), and, it must be remembered, Carnival of the Animals (1886) to the list. Childhood It is essential to realize that Saint-Saëns was undoubtedly, in fact, a child musical prodigy. Consequently, with this in mind, he made his concert debut, albeit at ten years old. Another critical point to remember is that he expressly studied at the Paris Conservatoire, then, despite reality, conversely followed a traditional career path as a church organist. Nevertheless, twenty years later, on the other hand, he left to become a successful freelance pianist and composer despite, as has been noted, his former employment situation. Furthermore, his performances were, after all, markedly in demand - not only in Europe but, above all, in the Americas all in all as well. YouthA point often overlooked is that in his youth, Saint-Saëns was undoubtedly excited about the modern music of the day. He was, in essence, fond of the music of his contemporaries, particularly Schumann, Liszt, and, for the most part, Wagner. In contrast, however, his compositions seemed, in fact, primarily confined within the conservative classical tradition. Be that as it may, he was, at the same time, nevertheless, a scholar of musical history. Criticism On the whole, his conservatism, in fact, ultimately brought him into frequent conflict in his later years with composers of the impressionist and, in particular, the dodecaphonic schools of musical thought. A point often overlooked is that he included neoclassical elements in his music, contrary to some critics. Furthermore, in so doing, he provided the most compelling evidence that he predicted the techniques and works by Stravinsky and Les Six. To put it another way, given these points, he was regarded, perhaps for the most part unfairly, as a non-progressive reactionary henceforth around the time of his passing.LegacySaint-Saëns taught briefly in Paris, where his students included Gabriel Fauré. Maurice Ravel later studied with Fauré. In conclusion, both Ravel and Fauré were powerfully influenced by Saint-Saëns, whom they respected as a musical mastermind.

In three movements, Romantic Sonata - Poems of Light (flute and piano) communicates how light can be a metaphor for the emotional and spiritual aspects of life. There are also three paintings - also created by the composer - joining hearing with sight as a poetic way of understanding ideas and emotions.Of Light and Shadow possesses a monothematic sonata design (rather than a two-theme structure), with a primary musical theme that is developed, and a brief closing section. Colors in the Clouds, the second movement of the work, does not differ greatly in tempo from the first movement, but rather is more relaxed in character. A slower middle section of this movement explores tone color through expressive use of extended techniques for the flute. Prism of the Heart is variation of the classical chaconne, with an introduction and a closing section. The conclusion of the first movement is developed and becomes the closing section of the third movement. This connects the first and third movements, bringing one back to where one started, yet experiencing change after the musical journey. The score and flute part in this edition are arranged to be printed double-sided, with correct page turns, directly from the PDF. Jeffrey Hoover's compositions- music ranging from soloist to symphony orchestra -have received recognition through the prestigious Trieste prize, the international Luigi Russolo competition, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications fellowships and more than 20 commissions. He is a member of the ACME roster of Mu Phi Epsilon, recognized for distinguished achievement as a composer. One unique aspect of Hoover’s work is when he combines composition with his paintings, creating synergetic art that intrigues and captivate audiences and performers alike. His paintings are seen in exhibitions and in concerts where his paintings are projected while musicians perform his music. Hoover’s background as a performer includes both classical and jazz music, as saxophonist and conductor. His book The Arts and Society: Making New Worlds is published by Kendall Hunt Publishing. Hoover was born on September 11, 1959, in Anderson, Indiana. He holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts (Composition and Interdisciplinary Fine Arts) from Texas Tech University, as well as and .Sc. from Ball State University. His career in higher education has included both faculty and arts administration appointments.
