Ningal is a slave girl at the time of the Pharoahs in Egypt (ironically named after the Sumerian-Akkadian Goddess, mother of the Sun God). When the Egyptian queen dies, Ningal is one of the slaves who have to follow her into the tomb and to die there. This is her simple but effective song (Now is the time of our going into darkness, from darkness to light). The sound sample is an electronic preview of the song, with clarinet representing the voice. The clarinet and guitar version is also available on this site. A version is also available for flute and guitar, appearing as the last movement of the music for the stage play/opera ATON.

I Come From Water is a chamber work for Mezzo-soprano, Baritone, Alto Flute, Clarinet, Bassoon Violin, Cello and, briefly, Bass Drum. The piece was inspired by news that the US may be planning to perform missile tests in the Pacific Ocean near the Hawaiian island of Kauai. Scientists are concerned that the tests may cause marine animals who orient themselves via sound waves, such as dolphins and whales, to become permanently deaf.The music is intended to evoke impressions of a life in water, beginning with non-verbal communication between fish in streams. Images, sensations and sounds of water are expressed throughout the piece as salmon make their way from streams to rivers to the ocean. Eventually, we hear a sense of quiet communion in the ocean, which is interrupted by three explosions. The marine animals respond with panic, followed by silence. The final measures are intended to express grieving.

I set Oscar Wilde's poem A Lament to commemorate a former student of mine, Michael Lewis Fallacaro, who was killed in a car crash on February 7, 2006. Michael was a marvelous clarinetist, so this piece features the clarinet. It is for tenor or soprano and piano. .

The text, originally written by Claude Louis Combet for the film Les Tribulations de Saint Antoine and translated into English, is sung from the point of view of the saint.
