Journeymen (young craftsmen) in Germany used to be required by law to go from town to town to practise their skills rather than stay in one town, which gave rise to many songs, of which Es es es und es is the best known - (the words of that song mean it is a hard conclusion but I have to leave this town). These journeys were referred to as Walz so these workers went auf der Walz. The idea of travelling auf der Walz was also taken up in Australia (where they called it on the Waltz or on the Wallaby) and it gave rise to the famous song Waltzing Matilda, although in the Ozzie song the traveller was a swagman rather than a craftsman. So I have called this arrangement On the Wallaby. In neither case was the 3/4 time of the Waltz used although there is probably a connection: I initially tried to create this merged arrangement in 3/4 but it didn't seem to work satisfactorily... So here is a 4/4 waltz based on the two traditional and related songs. The pdf file contains score and parts. The sound sample is an electronic preview.

Published by JB Linear (A0.582003). DAVE BRUBECK began experimenting with jazz using modern time signatures and harmonies in the 1950's and '60's. His Take Five album of 1959 was a revelation of what jazz could be in a modern sense. Blue Rondo A La Turk was on that album and uses a rhythm Brubeck heard on the streets of Turkey: 9/8 time, but divided into 1-2, 1-2, 1-2, 1-2-3. I have given this an advanced rating due to the challenge of playing these rhythms tightly at a fast tempo. The score is provided for reference only since the page turns are impossible. He titled it Moderato in Bm when it was first published as Op 67 No 5 in a volume of his Songs Without Words. It was often referred to as Heide Lied , a type of pastoral German folk song. Another title derived from that is Song of the Heather. Many current editions give it the title The Shepherd's Complaint. Â This instrumental duet arrangement takes a Romantic piece and sets it in 2 part writing. Even without the chords it is still very rich in sound and Romantic in feel. The metre is always in 3 even when the phrasing looks to be in 2; except for a section near the end where I have strayed from the original Mendelssohn and clearly marked Part II with tenutos to be in 2 against Part I in 3. I have also changed phrasing and articulation for more contrast between the two parts. This arrangement is faithful to the spirit of Mendelssohn yet freshens this beautiful old melody. The notes and rhythms are quite easy to play but I have marked it Early Intermediate because so much could be done with phrasing, articulation, and expression that would make this sound like a much more advanced piece. A great Romantic repertoire piece for students. (2 page score, 1 page Parts)

VivaceGeorg Philipp Telemann's Sonatas Op. 2, also known as the Six Sonatas for two flutes (or violins), are significant for several reasons. First, they are dedicated to two young music lovers, explicitly appealing to a circle of pupils and music enthusiasts. The pieces foster the ability of musical expression and are characterized by a combination of expansive baroque thematic material and charming galant features in the slow and fast movements, respectively. Telemann was considered one of the leading German composers of his time, and his works, including the Sonatas Op. 2, reflect his significant contribution to the Baroque music era. The Methodical nature of these sonatas, as described when they were published in 1732, is also noteworthy, as they included a second, ornamented version of the simple melodies, showcasing Telemann's innovative approach to composition.  Furthermore, Telemann's music, which incorporates French, Italian, and German national styles, remained highly regarded by colleagues and critics alike during his lifetime and the latter half of the 18th century. Numerous theorists and prominent composers cited his works as models, and he influenced pupils of J.S. Bach in Leipzig, such as Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. Published by JB Linear (A0.582192). John Field was born in Ireland in 1782. He was a fine pianist and has been known as one of the early originators of the Nocturne. His 18 Nocturnes for piano is composed in such a way as the melody is carried mostly by the right hand while the left hand produces a harmony figure. This makes these pieces likely ones to arrange as instrumental duets. What I had in mind was a set of pieces for a student playing the lead 1st part and their teacher playing the accompaniment. You will find the student or 1st part is similar in style and playing level as the slow etudes of the 32 Rose Etudes. There are 5 nocturnes in this setting. There is a score, however, due to page turns, the separate parts are more useful. Arranger's note: an accidental in one octave does not effect the same note in another octave,,,so an A# in a lower octave will be an A natural in a different octave.
