Published by Phil Beaman (A0.1076597). The Praeludium from Suite No 3 in A minor is originally for unaccompanied Cello solo by Max Reger (1873-1916, written 1914). For this unaccompanied duet arrangement the melody was creatively deconstructed into two parts that continuously interact as if each instrument is finishing the other's thoughts. The harmonies are inspired by the original double stops. The arrangement remains stylistically faithful to Reger's use of constantly shifting dynamics and ever-present expression marks. This 4 1/2 minute work is a worthy challenge for a serious concert or recital. A new approach to this Masterwork of the repertoire. A live performance will be considerably freer and more expressive than the temporary MIDI recording attached. Range - same note range for both parts which is a wide 2 1/2 octaves. 5 page score, 3 pages each part.

Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844417). Beautiful, easy arrangement of the children's Folk Spiritual God Is So Good. This Clarinet Duet is in 4 sections, for a total of 1 min and 15 sec. It begins with the melody in solo, then the melody in parallel thirds, then the melody in counterpoint, then closes with a fanfare section. Arranged for Beginners, it has only minims (half notes) and crotchets (quarter notes), and the range of Part I is within a 5th and the range of Part II is within an octave. A quality uplifting duet of a well known tune perfect for any early performance.

He titled it Moderato in Bm when it was first published as Op 67 No 5 in a volume of his Songs Without Words. It was often referred to as Heide Lied , a type of pastoral German folk song. Another title derived from that is Song of the Heather. Many current editions give it the title The Shepherd's Complaint. Â This instrumental duet arrangement takes a Romantic piece and sets it in 2 part writing. Even without the chords it is still very rich in sound and Romantic in feel. The metre is always in 3 even when the phrasing looks to be in 2; except for a section near the end where I have strayed from the original Mendelssohn and clearly marked Part II with tenutos to be in 2 against Part I in 3. I have also changed phrasing and articulation for more contrast between the two parts. This arrangement is faithful to the spirit of Mendelssohn yet freshens this beautiful old melody. The notes and rhythms are quite easy to play but I have marked it Early Intermediate because so much could be done with phrasing, articulation, and expression that would make this sound like a much more advanced piece. A great Romantic repertoire piece for students. (2 page score, 1 page Parts)

Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844705). Wieniawski's Legende is a repertoire standard that was originally written for Violin solo and Orchestra. I have greatly abridged and simplified the piece into a 2 part instrumental duet without losing any of the character of the Romantic piece. I have arranged themes from each of the three sections, keeping the original structure, but taking liberties such as changing phrasing, dynamics, adding my own markings, and even changing the Time Signature in certain passages. I begin with each instrument taking solo turns on the melody and end with a similar cadenza style set of solos for each instrument. The two parts are of equal importance and much of the character is in the interplay between the two instruments. This is a beautiful concert arrangement of a beloved classic.

Published by Phil Beaman (A0.845044). L'Hymne du Pape was written in 1864 by the great Hungarian composer Franz Liszt. It was written in honor of Pope Pius IX who was the Pope at that time. Liszt himself was then living in a monastery outside of Rome and had recently take Orders. For about 10 years he was in the religious phase of his life where he wrote sacred music. This piece was written for piano solo, but Liszt liked it so much that he did a version for pipe organ and soon thereafter a version for piano duet and then for chorus and orchestra.

I categorize it as Contemporary Classical because it fuses Classical, Baroque, Romantic, chromaticism, and lots of early jazz, all with a strong and vigorous Russian folk dance beat. Practicing your technique has never been so much fun; from mordents to syncopation with lots of varying articulation including staccato, slur, accents, and tenutos.

It turns out that the elixir was fake (just red wine), but it caused the two persons to realize that their love had always been real. My arrangement maintains this joyful, almost comedic, side of love's feelings. Following Ludovic's earlier piano arrangement I treat just three of the opera's many themes. I have altered and enriched some of the simplistic classical chord progressions. There are now numerous markings throughout, particularly in articulation. Each part requires accurate rhythms, and each part has some virtuosic extended patterned runs. The range for each instrument is wide-2 octaves plus a third. This piece is a fun way to show your technical skills in concert or audition/competition. Or useful anyplace that you want joyful melodrama (Donizetti's own description). Also works well for pre-wedding music if you prefer the humorous side of true love instead of the sappy stuff.

Published by Phil Beaman (A0.1349255). This jazz composition is based on the hauntingly beautiful 15th century medieval tune that is commonly used for the Advent carol O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. Â I have reharmonized it with the accompaniment in a Key Signature a fifth above that of the melody. Â The accompaniment, part 2, has a broken two chord ostinato throughout written as a walking bass line. Â I have altered the melody, part 1, and moved much of it to the off beats. Â As in period early music, I allow occassional dissonances in order to keep the ostinato. Â This piece makes a wonderfully useful and unique addition to the season's repertoire. Â (I have also published a version on this site with text so it can be sung by a soloist or unison choir with piano accompaniment.)
