The origins of the lyrics are less certain. Throughout the nineteenth century they were attributed to Martin Luther, but this version of events has since been discredited. With a performance time of around two and a half minutes, this version of Away in a Manger is perfect for seasonal celebrations and concert performances, both formal and informal. The jazz swing style is a fun and fresh take on this familiar traditional tune.Away in a Manger is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. The words have a meaning beyond the spiritual, with hidden references to the Underground Railway of the time that helped escaped slaves cross to Canada. The tempo was too fast for him to perform it, so he played it at half tempo and layer doubled the tape speed. Written around 1700, for many years this piece was attributed to Henry Purcell. But more recently many have questioned whether the composer was in fact Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. What is known is that the piece was written for a semi-opera called The Island Princess, and that both men contributed music to the production. In recent years this piece has become a popular wedding favourite. This full version is arranged as a duet for two Trumpets and the performance time is around two and a half minutes. Of course, performers, especially at weddings, may wish to abridge and shorten the arrangement. This is easily done as the different sections are self-contained and the repeat may be ignored.
