TWO BEATS, in this version for any two like members of the saxophone family, is a version of BEATS with an added second part. The original version of BEATS for soprano recorder was written in 2014 for Maria Dorner-Hofmann, a German recorder virtuoso who also teaches at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. The work, in 7 minutes, explores the evolution of repetitive cellular ideas using various meters, lengths of cells and musical atmospheres. There are simple passages as well as virtuosic ones and the energy level of the piece remains at a highly intensive level throughout the entire seven minutes.

Joplin lived for a while in Sedalia, Missouri and the Maple Leaf Club in that town is thought to have provided the name for this composition. It provided Joplin with a steady income for the rest of his life, and while he requested that it be played at his funeral, his wife refused as she felt it inappropriate. It was the first track on Joshua Rifkin’s famous 1970 revival recording of Joplin’s music and, never waning in popularity, it has featured in hundreds of films.This version for Alto and Tenor Saxophone Duet includes all four sections of the original composition. Joplin lived for a while in Sedalia, Missouri and the Maple Leaf Club in that town is thought to have provided the name for this composition. It provided Joplin with a steady income for the rest of his life, and while he requested that it be played at his funeral, his wife refused as she felt it inappropriate. It was the first track on Joshua Rifkin’s famous 1970 revival recording of Joplin’s music and, never waning in popularity, it has featured in hundreds of films.This version for Alto Saxophone Duet includes all four sections of the original composition.
