Joyride is a saxophone duet that oscillates from being loud and raucous when it thinks you're not looking to well-behaved and almost polite when it catches you watching. The back-and-forth motive suggests either a lack of control by either player or a complete abdication of any responsibility. Sure, there are some nice chorale-sounding moments, but even those get a little out of hand when in the hands of these two. Seriously, don't trust them. Years later, they'll look back on this and say It seemed like a good idea at the time..

A jazz line in the tradition of Ornette Coleman, in which the harmonies are irregular and provisional, not specified. For performance purposes, it can be interpreted loosely. Tempo can be as slow or as fast as desired. Time signatures are included for purposes of phrasing and are not necessarily meant to be strictly adhered to. If used as an etude, it may be helpful to treat the time in a stricter manner and work to play as fast as possible. The work is in large party built on unpredictable and/or unusual intervallic and chordal relationships, the mastery of which can only strengthen the player's technique. Lea Detlefs #6114259. Published by Lea Detlefs (A0.1016979). A wide ranging, effervescent piece great for a recital or encore. Cycles through the key of B flat, E flat, and E major. While originally for soprano sax, alto can also play the music as written and it will simply sound in a lower range from the recording. Trills, quick flourishes of ascending or descending scales, and bending of notes in the high range are some of the beautiful features of this music. This piece was inspired by the many wonderful Indian classical music performances I was able to attend while living in Austin, TX. It is meant to sound like an improvisation, and at one point even invites the player to add their own improvisation. The melodic lines are meant to be evocative of the sitar, while the trills preceded or followed by a short staccato exclamation recall the energetic tabla. This piece is not derived from a raga, but the title pays homage to the idea in classical Indian music that the various raga each bring up certain feelings and associations in the minds of the audience, or in other words, colour the mind.

Duration: 11 - 12 minutes, 18 pp. Description: In Korneitchouk's mischievously titled quasi-concerto for saxophone and orchestra, The Disqualification of Harry Semantix as Trial Juror for East County, the concept of Truth and Lie is explored musically, as well as metaphorically implying something deeper. The Truth (the opening theme after an introduction pieces it together) is slowly mutated into its opposite, the Lie -- upside down, backward, twice as long and strident (the closing theme just before the double cadenza at the end of the piece). The double cadenza, is in fact a cadenza for the saxophone played over a wild orchestral stretto -- a kind of orchestral cadenza -- both simultaneously intoning bits and pieces of either theme, and seems to ask: Can Truth coexist with its Lie? or perhaps, Can Truth exist without its Lie?The first incarnation of The Disqualification of Harry... (available on CD from Old King Cole Productions) appears as a duo for saxophone and piano and has only more recently been orchestrated. The composer tells us that the idea for this piece initially germinated from his own frustrations of having to serve jury duty and being disqualified as a potential juror for answering honestly during jury selection. East County is to be understood as Any County. Separate sax part included.
