His life was a constant struggle with adversity, and Joplin died relatively young in 1917, at the dawn of the recording age. Few remembered Joplin’s music until a revival in the 1970s brought The Entertainer and others to the world’s attention. Nowadays Scott Joplin has taken his rightful place in the gallery of great American composers. Then an Andante Espressivo section as the victorious player pauses to admire the beauty of the striped marble he has just won. Then Round 2 in the dominant key and another striped marble in the bag. A Recapitulation and a Picardy Third conclude the game with satisfaction. The notes and rhythms are quite easy. (Some might find a slight challenge in the 1 1/2 octave range or the quick tempo). The interest comes from the contrasting sections; energy vs espressivo, vivace vs andante, detached vs slurred. Two people are playing a spirited games of marbles. The energetic music (Vivace) goes back and forth between the two players. Drama builds. Then an Andante Espressivo section as the victorious player pauses to admire the beauty of the striped marble he has just won. Then Round 2 in the dominant key and another striped marble in the bag. A Recapitulation and a Picardy Third conclude the game with satisfaction. The notes and rhythms are quite easy. (Some might find a slight challenge in the 1 1/2 octave range or the quick tempo). The interest comes from the contrasting sections; energy vs espressivo, vivace vs andante, detached vs slurred.
