There has been much speculation over the identity of Eleanor Rigby, and a gravestone bearing that name has been discovered close to where Paul McCartney grew up in Liverpool. But Paul McCartney insists that he chose the natural-sounding name as a combination of a friend’s name and a shop he noticed in Bristol. Indeed, the original working title of the song was Miss Daisy Hawkins.This version of Eleanor Rigby is arranged as a duet for two Alto Saxophones. Musicians at an intermediate level will find this ideal for formal and informal concert performance. The overall performance time is around two and a half minutes. Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to help with ensemble skills and expressive playing. Born on February 23, 1924, in La Flèche, Jacques Bouillault was 21 years old when, in 1945, he met the Marquise Hélène Rola de Rosycki, who settled him in a forest lodge located southeast of the town, on the Tertre-Rouge hill. Initially, he established himself there as a naturalist-taxidermist. His preserved animals were joined by live ones: birds, foxes, reptiles, rodents... In 1955, the filmmaker Marco de Gastyne made a short film about Bouillault and his zoological park entitled Homme, Notre Ami (Man, Our Friend), with music by Germaine Tailleferre, who was particularly drawn to animals.The « Singes » (Monkeys) sequence is intended to illustrate the capers and other playful activities of these primates in a rather humorous manner.

It starts off 'straight' (A), alternating between primarily 3/4 and 4/4, then moves into a cool 'swing' (B), followed by a repeat of 'A' and 'B' with some interesting variations, then one more repeat of the 'A' section before culminating in a captivating coda. Rhythmically, a little tricky, but the metre changes feel quite natural. Great piece foir solo/ensemble, recital, concert. Intermediate. Anthony Giamanco is a member of ASCAP. TWO - BEATS is a version of BEATS with an added second part. A third drone part could be added using an E natural that could be sung or played by any number of professional and/or amateur performers. The added second part may be played by any instrument - for example, a marimba or violin. BEATS for soprano recorder was written in 2014 for Maria Dorner-Hofmann, a German recorder virtuoso who also teaches at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. The work, in 7 minutes, explores the evolution of repetitive cellular ideas using various meters, lengths of cells and musical atmospheres. There are simple passages as well as virtuosic ones and the energy level of the piece remains at a highly intensive level throughout the entire seven minutes.
