The music is thought to have originated in Muslim Spain a thousand years ago and spread across North Africa in the following centuries. The music is set to the ancient Muwasha poetry, often with secular themes such as love. Andalusi music remains popular today, especially in Morocco, and has influenced many other forms of Arab music. Øب aims to capture the melody and spirit of this timeless music.Øب is written for players at an advanced intermediate standard and upwards. The preamble is in free time, like an improvisation, followed by the melody and instrumental interludes in a typical ten beat cycle. Øب has a performance time of around three minutes. The Elite Syncopations was one of many solo piano rags written by Scott Joplin in the wake of his success with Maple Leaf Rag. Published in 1903, The Elite Syncopations followed the classic four part structure that Joplin had developed with earlier compositions. In 1974 the Royal Ballet in London produced a ballet based on ragtime music using The Elite Syncopations as both the title and main theme. This arrangement of The Elite Syncopations is arranged as a duet for one Soprano Saxophone and one Clarinet. Joplin lived for a while in Sedalia, Missouri and the Maple Leaf Club in that town is thought to have provided the name for this composition. It provided Joplin with a steady income for the rest of his life, and while he requested that it be played at his funeral, his wife refused as she felt it inappropriate. It was the first track on Joshua Rifkin’s famous 1970 revival recording of Joplin’s music and, never waning in popularity, it has featured in hundreds of films.This version for Clarinet and Alto Saxophone Duet includes all four sections of the original composition. The tempo in recorded versions varies widely between 72 and 126, so the marking of 92 is a suggestion only.
