You know how we violists like to do things together. Here's a chance to play the Arpeggione Sonata (movement 1) in a whole new way. Not sure what Schubert would think, but it's really fun and challenging for both parts. I think it honors the intent of the original pretty well, too. Feel free to transfer fingerings and bowings from your own solo part. There are just a few changes in the viola 1 part that flesh out the lines for duet purposes, but you should recognize it. This work for two violas features soaring melodic lines and moments of fast paced demisemiquavers. It is ideal for advanced players who would like to add a piece that is very unique to their repetoire or program. A foreword from the composer:“First and foremost, this work is dedicated to Kristen Scott. It stands as a reminder of a lifelong friendship, and how strong that friendship is. Thank you for supporting me and being so wonderful.This work I began writing in May of this year, and initially it was just an improvisation for one viola. I had then realised after trying to write for Solo Viola how difficult it was, since it is such a unique instrument. I wanted to make the most of the technical and musical capabilities of the instrument, so I added another Viola. With that addition, each motif seemed to make more sense and the music just flowed. Centre is based on the concept of centring oneself, but also the beauty in being surrounded by motion; by seeing things happening around you and being able to observe. Just being allowed to exist, in a way.I’ve always been inspired by Australian composers, especially since I have been lucky enough to be surrounded by their music at different points in my life. My teacher Patricia Pollett, has been actively involved in advocating for Australian composition for the viola, including commissions, recording and performances. So, being able to take my work to our lessons was hugely thought provoking and inspiring. The insights she gave helped to access more depth and meaning within the work.†- Sophia Mackson.

Published by David McKeown (A0.587132). Voi Che Sapete is an aria from the second act of W A Mozart’s comic opera, The Marriage of Figaro. It has become one of Mozart’s best loved melodies and features the servant Cherubino singing excitedly about his experience of first love. This version is arranged as a duet for two Violas. Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances, with both parts enjoying melodic interest. The duet format gives solo instrumentalists an opportunity to play music written for the voice. The overall performance time is a little over two minutes. The short audio sample is from the Clarinet and Alto Saxophone version while the full youtube performance is the Clarinet Duet. Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to help with ensemble skills and expressive playing. There is detailed articulation and a wide range of dynamics. Garth Knox is one of the most prominent violists of his generation, and as former long-time member of the Arditti Quartet he has developed and maintained a fondness of contemporary music. In the meantime, he gives concerts and teaches courses all over the world.
With 'Viola Spaces' he wants to make contemporary playing techniques accessible to advanced players. The pieces, or 'playing spaces', are true concert studies, each of them dealing with specific techniques such as harmonics, pizzicato (with 9 fingers!) or tremolos which are explained in great detail.
Another volume with modern playing techniques for two violas and a volume with variations on a piece by the French viola da gamba master Marin Marais for four violas are planned.
